Exclamation Republic Airlines brings Herman back on the 737-700!

Heeeeeere's Herman!

Just rolled out of the paintshops at The Chicken Works is an idea for a modernized Republic Airlines on the 737-700. I gotta tell ya folks, we were going to paint up a 717 or an MD-90, but the guys in the graphics department just love that tall big tail on the 737-700 and the rest of the 737NG series.

Republic was formed in 1979 out of the merger of North Central Airlines and Southern Airlines. It was North Central that had the famous flying duck "Herman" on its jets. Republic kept Herman on the tails of its jets and just last week I finally got my GJ Republic 727-200 and man, I dig this logo.

Herman had to be on the plane somehow in a modern version of Republic Airlines but I wanted to move away from just using it on the tail like it was before. Like I said in the thread with my Piedmont jets, I'm REAL partial to the Canadian Proud Wings livery and found it to be a really refreshing use of the corporate logo.

Well Herman digs that livery too! Only this time I thought about more than just one bird. More than two. Three, actually. Maybe it was the three swallows on the Ozark tails that influenced me. Or maybe it was the several servings of 'shine I had over the weekend. Two birds on the tail a la Proud Wings style in contrasting blues similar to the blues the original Republic used.

I'm a bit infatuated with using the corporate logo again in some significant way on the forward fuselage like I did with the Frontier jets. So voila, another Herman there that breaks up the monotony of the ORDINARY fuselage cheatline. By using several logos, I wanted to give an impression of a flock of birds in flight to suggest the many employees that make the airline go, or the many passengers, or just plain old safety in numbers.

I hate having to use too much white on the fuselage and chose a pale blue color to suggest the birds flying in the sky. The darker blue lower cheatline can be the horizon, a lake (especially appropriate up in Republic's home bases of Michigan and Minnesota).

Again, I like a polished metal belly for a contrasting look. The only white used is on the necks of the birds, the lower nacelles, and a thin white line under the lower cheatline.

I wanted something different for the livery titles and put it up on the tail at an angle like Southwest. But this still left the forward fuselage kind of bare to me, so I added the complete titles in smaller sized font on the forward fuselage.

I'll be honest here. I've done and redone this plane several times over and I still think I'm not quite where I want it to be. Maybe that's my perfectionist side, I dunno. Call this version 1.0, I'm still playing with it on the side.

Opinions?

Thumbs up Fab!

This is GREAT Doc! I LOVE it!

I really like all of your thinking on this livery. It all makes alot of sense. The whole flock of birds thing, the blue sky, but still using aqua like the old North Central scheme. The BIG herman on the fuselage makes a real statement. Nice to see a scheme that uses a generally larger logo forward than on the tail.

I also really like the positive/negative titles forward. That they are small makes a nice contrast to your SUPER graphics geese and the now common GIANT titles in use today. (although I am a big proponent of giant titles! ) Nice font choice too. Modern, not too blocky, but still business-like

You may not be happy with it yet, and that's fine... I look forward to what you do to it next... This is actually minor, (although wordy! )but the only thing I'd look at is removing either the upper or lower dark blue chaseline on the aqua cheat. I really like the separation the lower one gives across the nacelle, so I'd favor losing the upper one. This will simplify the design, retain the flavor you're looking for and allow the aqua to do it's own job against the sky-tone crown. I think you'll have to do a little deatailing to Herman's tail in that area anyway. Let the wing to tail sweep continue smoothly through into the top of the aqua cheatline. Round his derriere (like you have in the logo above the plane) to make a clean even acute off-tangent to the cheatline.

SMOKIN' GREAT work doc! If you weren't already medically inclined, I'd favor teaming up with you someday!

Default Doc's all of yours are great!

I also have a Frontier one! Using the style of branding from the 50's with the green and red and using artwork nameplate of the Current Frontier.

If all of yours, Dar's and mine were 1:400th I would have to collect all! I like the Frontier and Republic the most. I have same feeling as Dar about simplification with a stripe deletion. Texas International's MD-90 was great also. You are multitalented!

Well, I thought as great as the Chicken Works livery is... I should offer a more conservative alternative...

I had started this before I saw the Doc's work and figured I may as well finish it...

Since Sept 11, word has it that business flyers are flocking to private jets as their main choice in air transportation. Based on that line of thinking, I feel that a regional like Republic should have some of that Biz-Jet flavor while retaining the colors and logo of their heritage. (...abd let's just state right here that the BORING, effeminate, late 80's "Mary Tyler Moore" style livery Republic adopted before folding into Northwest was a BIG mistake!)

I started by bringing Herman into the 21st century. I smoothed him out a bit and changed out the circle for an oval... I also lined it up with the ring on his neck and gave it that "wrapping behind the wings" look.

The cheatlines are meant to evoke the direction and coloration of the Republic/North Central of the past as well as impart a sense of high speed. Do they look a bit like Eastern's old livery? Perhaps a little... is that such a bad thing? The white on the fuselage ties into the current "modern" EuroWhite themes without being as boring and cheap looking. I like big logos and I've put one on the forward fuselage here. I think that Herman should get his due and be featured right up front. I also purposely made the titles smaller than average to keep the logo and cheatlines as the first read elements. In contrast, I made the logo MUCH smaller on the tail, as a nod to the Northwest tail logo and because it further enhanced the dominance cheatlines and their Biz-Jet look.

I like the high-polish look used on many Jetstreams and have used it here on the belly and aft part of the empennage. I think it gives a nice jewel-like detail to finish with.

So this contrasts Doc's offering, quite purposely and attempts to build on Republic's heritage...

Any thoughts?

Dar & Chicken, I like both of your ideas!!

Chicken's looks great... it's exciting and fun, but without going overboard. However, I think if Republic was still around, Dar's idea would definitely be closer to what they would have on their aircraft. It's interesting to look at, but conservative. It's modern and stylish, but with a retro look.

So when ARE all of your ideas going to be put on 1:400 models?

Rick

PS- Since you're running out of former airlines to dream up schemes for, here's a modern one that I think needs a LOT of work: Air Canada.

Excellent renditions, guys. I'm leaning a bit more towards Dar's version (sorry, Doc). I'm not so keen on the dual-logo thing (nose and tail), but I think the overall presentation is great! Maybe something different with the tail, or just no logo there?

Steve

Thumbs up Dar, it's not as boring as you think it is!

To be honest, Dar, I was a bit shocked when I first saw your version of Republic as it seemed sedate for you. But the more I look at it, the more I'm seeing the practicality behind the livery. Sometimes there can be elegance in simplicity.

I like the updated logo LOTS. The way the ring is now an oval and comes nicely in line with the neck band on Herman was a very nice touch. You know, it almost reminds me of a variation of the old McDonnell Douglas corporate logo (except pointed the other way) which I always thought looked cool. Herman looks pretty sweet slimmed down with more sweep in the wings.

I couldn't help but notice that the way your cheatlines sweep up the tail fin to a point has a visual similariy to the sweep and pointedness of Herman's wings. Was that on purpose? Got me wondering what the tail might look like with the logo superimposed on that blue/light blue line- but granted, the 717 tail is a bit small for that arrangement perhaps.

Is the high-polish look you refer to baremetal or that pearl colored satin-like finish? Either way, that's a nice effect the way it goes up the tail. I must say, though, if it's that pealescent finish I'm thinking of, that will look very striking in the sunlight.

This is a very business-like livery and hits that feel square on, Dar. That cheatline alone would look sharp on a Gulfstream V or Citation X!

Cool well, I didn't think it was boring, just conservative..

Thanks for all of the nice words about this and my other works guys! Since I'm used to paying clients ripping my design work apart, and having to defend my positions on it, I really appreciate constructive criticism... kudos are simply icing on the proverbial cake for me!

...and speaking of icing!

Indeed Doc... there IS a method to my madness! The good designer knows when to "KISS" it! Sometimes less IS more and that's what I WNATED to do here...

I like the updated logo LOTS.... it almost reminds me of a variation of the old McDonnell Douglas corporate logo which I always thought looked cool.

As I did it I was reminded of the old MD logo too, but that's really just the dynamics at work... if you overlayed them, they'd look totally different of course... (even flipped) Still, that I could get that much more motion out of Herman, when he was already a pretty fast logomark, made me quite happy. Glad you noticed!

Yes this WAS on purpose... I wanted to give the FEEL of the logo to the cheatlinework without actually sticking the logo over it. (Something I always felt the previous double cheat failed at doing.) I actually had to work pretty hard to get it right. Consequently, even though I tried many different sizes and overlay combinations, I was never happy with the logo crossing the cheatlines. It only confused them, and of course took away from te "Biz-Jet" look which was my main concept here. I settled on the small logo on the tail because I think it adds balance, detail and keeps it looking like and airline and NOT TOO MUCH like just a big private-jet. If you follow "little" Herman's wings up the tail, you'll find that the cheatlines converge on the same point. That's why it all looks so harmonious and dynamic.

Is the high-polish look you refer to baremetal or that pearl colored satin-like finish?

Polished metal with a clearcoat. I hadn't thought of using Pearl... Hmmm...

This is a very business-like livery and hits that feel square on, Dar. That cheatline alone would look sharp on a Gulfstream V or Citation X!

Thanks Doc! Then I know I've been sucessful!
