Default The NEW Air Cal!

To continue tugging the bait that Travelin' Man tossed out... Here is an idea for a NEW Air Cal!

I really liked Doc's 737-700, but I have a soft spot for the shorter-bodied -600, so that is what I used to base this livery on. I think that Air Cal would do well doing a re-start with this bird. It is so versatile, can run out of both hot & high as well as just plain HOT airports with power to spare! Parts are common with the longer variants that would enevitably be prchased and it could probably handle the Tahoe run in a pinch too! Like the 717, this is a real hot rod amongst small airliners.

I started with an all new interpretation of the sun logo used so long ago. I wanted it to have both a funky sunny feel as well as be just a little like a hurricane to give it the inference of a speedy wind. I began using it all in gold, but gradually added the colors (or derivatives thereof) from the last scheme before the buyout.

I began the scheme with just the sunlogo on a gold tail, but overall it was too eurowhite. I added the distorted supergraphic of the logo all over the fuselage and liked it alot! VERY dynamic and exciting, but the tail looked detached all by itself in gold and just too white again if I made it white, so I added the goldtop carrying forward from the tail. I experimented with MANY variations on this theme and decided that this had the best balance. The silver belly wrapped it all up. I looked at all gold engine nacelles as well, but felt that they were overpowering, so I tu-toned them instead. I didn't HATE them a solid color, but I think this works better.

I toyed around with a couple of purely cheatline versions, (harkening back to both the last and Air California days) but they looked so boring and old school compared to this, that here we are. I wanted it to provide a fresh youthful and fun feeling...

Thoughts?

Now THIS I like! It screams California and sun and fun. Your interpretation of the updated sun logo is a real knockout, the "hurricane" effect works nicely as both evocative of the Sun and the wind. The use of AirCal's final colors before the American acquistion was a nice touch that gives this livery a festive look.

Now mind you it's not so festive that it doesn't look classy as well, and that side of the livery is boosted by the use of the gold colors on the top of the fuselage, tail, and nacelle tops.

Good move there, avoiding too much of a festive look. You either look trite like all those Japanese liveries that look like billboards for Saturday morning cartoons, to too much like a vacationer's airline, like the old ATA livery. You could argue that the use of the colors and the superlogo on the fuselage looks festive, but to my eye it also looks sharp and elegant- in a Southern California business kind of way....

I also caught the small AirCal titles by the forward pax door. Nice little touch for the passengers boarding via enclosed jetways! I've always thought that the walk out to the plane should build a sense of excitement and all these enclosed jetways do nothing but make you feel like you're going down a cattle chute. On a tangent here for a moment, kudos to airports that have glass jetways. I've been at airports that you had to walk out the plane in the open and it was a nicer experience (if the weather was nice) to do it that way. Putting the titles by the passenger entry is a nice little token reminder on who you're flying.

I wonder, have you toyed with a half superlogo on the fuselage to look like a setting sun? With California out on the West, the setting sun over the ocean is always a nice sight.

Best work yet, Dar! What airlines should we do next?

BTW, Craig, I couldn't view your work! You're killin' me here with anticipation!

Lightbulb Version 2.0

As always, I'm never REALLY done with a design even after it's posted! Here is the NEW version 2.0 AirCal...

As you can see, I've taken a bit of the "riot" out of it and most of all, made the gold-top more integrated. I much prefer this newer version as I feel it is more dynamic and simpler.

This time out, I took a quarter of the logo, "supersized" it and distorted the heck out of it. I then harmonized the lines to make them flow better by making various tweaks. I also decided to go with the all gold engines on this version, as it supported the new style best. I DO think that the engines on the previous version make a more sophisticated statement, but they wouldn't relate to this scheme well. I thought about adding an additional color stripe to the nacelles, but it would have confused the titles.

Thanks for the glowing review Doc! I'm still thinking about that setting sun idea...

What do you all think of THIS version?

BTW, Craig... I like your AirCal livery idea for it's form, the stripes are REALLY dynamic and exciting! ...but the colors and titles make me think of the University of Southern California! (My wife is an alumni!) You could take that baby straight out of the paintshop, load up the "Mighty" Trojans and head off to a Bowl Game!

Now that you mention it, it DOES have a bit of a "Val Surf" look! It's probably the whole gold outline and maroon fill thng that is making it look Like USC to me. Their official school sports logo is set-up like that. (and you can believe that people from UCLA will notice it too! Heh, heh! )

I really like the stripes! They look like super-speedlines, or indeed like some graphic you'd see on a surf or skateboard from a few years ago. Speaking of which, wouldn't it be cool to do a scheme with a picture on the belly, like skateboards have? Then people below would see the image as it was on approach over the city!

Anyway, Craig... your livery would really stand out at the terminal! No boring straight cheatlines or fuselage deviod of anything but titles... Just sitting there it looks fast! I can imagine a whole row of them at John Wayne Airport... they'd all look ready to jump right over the building! THAT would make flying look fun again! Nice job... just change the colors in the titles so the fellows from Berkley will get on the plane already, they're holding up the line!

Exclamation OK, ok... the LAST tweak...

The LAST tweak on THIS style livery... Now THIS version is my favorite!

So I changed to the engines that I said I thought would confuse the titles issue... i actually LIKE IT BETTER! So SUE me! (Whatta ya WANT fer nuthin'? a rubber Biscuit!?!?)

I also swapped the purple and pink stripes... I think it makes better color ordering sense.

ANYONE?

Dar, this last one is my favorite so far! I think it looks excellent and your reasons for doing what you have done seem to make sense. You're right about the color-ordering being better, and adding that purple stripe onto the nacelles really ties it together nicely. It's classy, but in a California sorta way...

Craig, I like yours as well! It seems to flow well and fits the aircraft nicely. At first, I thought there might be too much white, but the more I look at it the more I like it the way it is.

Keep up the good work, guys. I really enjoy seeing your work!

What to do next? How about Republic?

Thumbs up Can I have a Rubber Biscuit?

Rubber Biscuit. Isn't that a song from the Blues Brothers? Oh well.

Craig, I like the color choices in your stripes- not only do the stripes seem to flow naturally, the colors seem to flow naturally to the eye from the lighter colors to the darker colors.

USC? When I first saw your version of the AirCal titles, for some odd-a$$ reason I thought of Chinese food. Go figure, I must've been hungry! Have you tried tilting the titles the opposite way?

The way you have your stripes arranged will make for a striking appearance from the ground as the plane passes overhead. I don't know if anyone ever thinks of that when they design these liveries, but we see the bottom of airplanes more than the tops!

Dar, the last version is the best one. I particularly like the closer integration of the gold top with the fuselage superlogo (man, there's that word again. SUPERLOGO!) At first I like the all-gold nacelle look, but echoing the fuselage coloration is a nice touch that doesn't leave the nacelles sticking out of place in the overall livery (like the current Delta Wavy Gravy look. Man, that look sucks the big one).
