Lightbulb Reborn PSA 717!

About a week ago Travelin' Man proposed that with the downturn of the industry as run by the MegaMerger airlines, that some of our favorite regional carriers of the past should be folded back OUT and return to the skies... I agree wholeheartedly and feel that PSA should be the first!

...and on that track of thinking, I present the reborn PSA!

Reminescient of the past, My favorite PSA livery was the pink sunset. This is obviously based on that scheme, but updated. It's been awhile since a good cheatline style scheme has come along and I think that this presents both a modern face to an old name as well as providing classically good looks. The old pink scheme suffered from premature oxidation (say THAT 3 time fast! ) but I think that with new paint technology available, the colors would last longer and be feasibly economical.

I think that the 717 would be a likely airframe to re-start the service network with... versatile and well suited to the west coast traffic without being too large, as well as being sporty and recalling the T-Tailed PSA jets of the past.

Thoughts? Criticisims?

Cool Thats Cool!

I like that reincarnation of PSA!

The former owners of the real PSA have an airline in Tanzania called Northern Air out of Arusha. Using Cessna Caravans, Cessna 402, Cessna 404 and Cessna 206.

I did artwork for them and it is ready for publication. You can see Northern Air's Cessna 404 on Aerosite.

Thumbs up Premature oxidation! Premature oxidation! Premature ejac...ooops!

This is sharp work, Dar. The 717 is one of my favorites, a nice 21st Century version of the long line of DC-9 jets, from the Baby Nine to the MD-90. (Acutally everyone really knows the 717 is DC jet deep down inside!)

How about one in the Fruitstripe livery (have to differ with you there, Dar, the Fruitstripe was my favorite PSA livery)?

No question that the smile is a must on any updated/modernized PSA livery.

The flowing cheatline evokes smooth movement with a nice upsweep to the tail, like the plumage of a bird or the upstroke at the end of an artist's signature. Nice effect.

Did you try alternate liveries with bolder PSA titles? I don't think the titles should be in anything but black (for some odd damn reason I think it should be the same color as the smile, go figure).

I'm sitting here in my head playing with variations on this livery and I wonder what titles on the tail would do, kind of like the original livery had. But then that might interrupt the smooth flow from the nose down the fuselage.

Mind you I'm not in the graphics design field (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night), but the "pacific southwest airlines" titles seem a bit out of place and awkward to me- I don't have a great suggestion on where to put them or what to do with them. Any ideas, Dar?

Default Dar dude!

Dar

I like it just as it is. Nice colors! One of these days when I win the lottery I'm gonna start up another Ozark Air Lines and I want you to design the paint scheme. Gotta use the green of course and all three swallows.

Very Cool
Bill

Funny you should mention it Bill... Lookee what I just found on my hard drive!

I was actually working on this when I read your post so I hurried up and finished it. I wanted to evoke the smooth swoopy feel of the old 60's-70's Ozark, (my favorite version) but with a nod to the later scheme with the two-tone colors. I thought about the three swallows but decided on two for the tail as I could make them larger. (I prefer large, simple tail graphics... it's more eye-catching at the terminal!) The third is up by the logo on the cabin and is now part of the logo-mark.

Again using the 717 here. I really like this A/C and I since I just finished the blank, it was easier! BTW, I saw on airliners.net that there is ALREADY a new Ozark... so, you might want to save that lottery money to BUY THEM OUT! they are using Fairchild-Dornier 328 jets and service DFW! HEY! Why isn't the Doc all over this!?!?!

Speaking of Doc... I did try doing the PSA logo on the tail, but I really liked the flow of the cheat going into the tail and it interrupted that flow too much, so I dumped it. I much prefer the resultant simplicity of the name only on the cabin, (like the Braniff Ultra scheme) but you are right about the "pacific southwest airlines" titles in subscript. It does look a bit out of place. I wanted to evoke the old 60's livery which had the titles under the cheat... I liked their look at 3am, but in the light of day, well...

As to the Orange version. Yes, I've done that one too... perhaps I'll post it later tonight or tomorrow for all of you "Orange Fruitstripe" lovers...

PS: I just added a little adjustment to the lower stripe to give it better fluidity.

Thumbs up YO-zark!

Ozark and a 717, that's a match made in heaven boys. It would have made a perfect replacement for all those DC-9-30s they had.

I like how you gave the swallows a bit of a "nose-up" attitude, like they're shooting upward like rockets or something similarly evocative. Three swallows on the tail would have been nice, but the 717's tail isn't exactly conducive to that given it's relative small size compared to say, a 737NGs tail. Adding the third swallow to the forward fuselage was a nice touch.

I like the upward sweep of the cheatline as it narrows to a point on the nose, it sort of reminds me of the original TWA livery that used a red arrow-like cheatline that had a lower line that swept upward towards the nose. Gives it a nice retro yet rakish look. Using the narrow white band on the lower cheatline sets it out nicely.

I like this typeface for the titles. It's modern and young looking without looking trivial like the new BMI titles.

I made a big issue on my Piedmont 737-700 of having a livery that connected with an airline's past and I think you've done that nicely on this bird, Dar. Too many daggum airlines blot out their past in rebranding attempts and in the process erase their own identities. This livery looks modern yet still would look familiar to any Go-Getter from the 1960s.

Have you looked at maybe using baremetal on the grey areas of the fuselage? I don't know if it takes away from the overall effect but it might be a nice contrast to the white upper fuselage.

You know, we're all so used to seeing an Ozark livery on a rear-engined, T-tailed jet that I wonder how your interpretation would look on, say, a 737-600?
