Default What if??? Die Cast could fly

This is an aspect of the hobby I had not anticipated when collecting began last fall. The resources of flightradar24, Google Earth and Wikipedia make it possible to create a virtual travelogue of destinations and paths featuring my die cast airliners.

Eventually, as I become more adept at using the above resources, I think logging an around-the-world die cast flight would be fun. Right now I'm touring Lake Baikal in Siberia. By way of Aeroflot Moscow (SVO) to Irkutsk (IKT) using my 1:400 Phoenix B737-800, Regis. VP-BRF.

Cheers and happy collecting, ArnoldC

Time for an update. Yes, die-cast really can fly. At least virtually.

My VP-BRF, Phoenix 1:400 Aeroflot B737-800 is off the runway and on the apron for periodic maintenance. Having done great service transporting me about Europe and Asia. Logged 20hr:35min as a virtual passenger.

Getting me to Siberia and Lake Baikal was especially cool. -30degF cool. Anyway, felt compelled to recognize a trip I've long wanted to make-if only virtually. So VP-BRF gets a display base made from a Google earth image of Lake Baikal cut to fit.

My last flight with her took me to Ulan Bator, Mongolia (ULN). From there the adventure continues, but on a different die-cast.

Cheers, enjoy, and good collecting. Regards, ArnoldC.

Hello DA.C readers. Perhaps a review of how this is evolving into an around-the-world (A-T-W) die cast flight may be of interest. It also avails me the opportunity to include earlier flight legs into what has become the "A-T-W".

Lufthansa D-ABIR was my second die cast purchase. It fascinated me that I could follow its flight history on flightradar24. Strapping myself into a coach-class seat, logging of virtual flight time began. 11hrs:45min were logged aboard GJ's 1:400 B737-500 'City of Anklam' model before it flew off into storage in Florida, U.S.A. I was well and fairly 'hooked' with virtual flying by now.

A Phoenix 1:400 Azerbaijan Airlines A319 came next. And that's when the A-T-W began to develop. Two round-trip legs, one each to Eurasia and Europe. Then a final one-way flight on [City of] 'Ganja' across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan. Then on to Moscow which brings this thread round to its beginning.

Cheers, and happy collecting, ArnoldC

Hello all,

My DragonWings 1:400 A321, reg. B-2290, cools down on the apron for routine maintenance. It added four more waypoints in China to my A-T-W journey. She is in deferred maintenance for a while awaiting a conversion to 'wheels up' configuration.

China Eastern then capped off an interesting tour off by a handoff flight to Osaka, Japan. That in itself was interesting. Kansai / Osaka KIX is a man made island in Osaka Bay. Not unlike a carrier landing without a tail hook.

The around-the-world die cast journey continues with Korean Air.

[edit: Cool. Just discovered I can add a Google earth image of my flight path. Should help you better understand my A-T-W adventures. To the left of the image, some of the flight paths B-2290 took me on in China are visible. The purple path is the non-die cast scheduled flight that brought me from Ulan Bator, Mongolia to Beijing. // ArnoldC]

Cheers, and happy collecting, ArnoldC.

Thanks, Ironclaw.

Good times in the hanger today converting my DragonWings 1:400 China Eastern A321, to wheels-up configuration. Like its looks much better now.

Also put together a display base depicting B-2290's flight path Beijing to Xi'an back on the 6th of Feb. Leg 12 of the A-T-W flight. Rugged country, even from 20,000ft. Credits to Google earth for the map images.

Enjoy, Cheers and good collecting. ArnoldC.
