Default Once again DB updates?!

Well, can we get some? Its getting harder to keep up with growing collections and the inablility of you guys to be able to manage the db!

I couldnt care about the back end coding and what work you guys need to fix, you guy should have known the expectation of keeping the database up to date, to keep this place a success.

If only DIMA would take off and I would leave anything to do with Wings900.

Regards,
An upset user.

I just set up custom models as placeholders until the database is updated. At least my collection count stays up to date that way...

Hi Lance, I couldn't agree more. I've given up on even trying to update my collection on this sh.t site. It has gone downhill so badly since the change of owners.
I'm even starting to loose interest in collecting model aircraft.

These mafangola's are hopeless.

Good idea! Thanks!

I am thinking of setting up a database on my pc. Then I won't need anything and I can track my fleeting easier with more variables.

+1. Except my interest in models is growing, lol.

I have spoken with Christian who is developing the new database. His ideas are impressive and go beyond aircraft to all collectables however only time will tell whether that is a good thing and he has unfortunately alienated all the old admins hence the lack of db updates. There are also major question marks over whether he has the finances to finish his dream or not. The new db if it ever appears will certainly not be anything like the current one. At present DiMA is a lot more stable and the db is excellent.

MAS Media seem only to have an interest in collecting ad revenue and nothing else. I've tried e-mailing them and have spoken with one of their guys but he doesn't seem to know much. The whole thing at present is a shambles.

I collect diecast cars, that's why I belong to several diecast car forums, I do't expect them to record my die cast planes and I don't expect to record my car collection on an aircraft site.
Promising us the world with a database is great, but give us an aircraft database that we can use NOW.
DiMA is starting to look better and better.

I agree but Christian sees aircraft as just the first step in a mighty database to rule them all. It is indeed possibly folly but that's the plan. I use DiMA for my database needs in the meantime and wouldn't be unhappy to see the forum move their too if only people could get over their waffle issues.

Incidentally the database and the forum are no longer connected in anyway - the wings900 database just happens to be available on DAC, wings900 and scale600 at present. MAS Media don't care about the database at all they just own and want the forum - seemingly for revenue reasons alone.

...but at least we still have a forum!
I have my own database of my collection so that's solved and only use this one when needing a specific search criteria.

Mate thats exactly right - before the database it was nothing more then just a couple collectors who got together to talk and share in the interest of model planes, then came the database.

Yes its important but at the end of the day, DiMA may have the flash database but that's about it... they will never have a forum such as this or Wings900 and more... all they will have is a database. This forums atmosphere isn't created by a database its created by members/collectors that are here and on W900. It seems to be very small minority compared to the vast forum community who keep bringing up the issues - cmon guys, we are kept in the loop at all times when possible and if you have any issues, just ask, yes they don't get back to ya straight away but they will and have done.

Once the DB issues are sorted, everything will be back to normal and with these new changes possibly coming up it may even be better but hey its great to have a second back up such as DiMA but for now im happy to stick around and ride it out at least the forum will still be here.

G'day,

It's awesome hearing all you guys bickering, no... wait a minute... 5 guys out of 20,000+ members...! Who am I..? I'm the guy who has taken over the Database updates on Wings900. I'm a volunteer and Team Member, currently one guy, but soon to be many more, fortunately a lot of other members of DAC and Wings900 have volunteered to help with all the work now that several Old School members decided to leave.

Why did they leave? Well some still work for Todd and Michael (the previous owners) and still do stuff over on Airlinelogos.net And others, well move on, like often happens in member driven volunteer organisations.

As far as DiMA is concerned, don't forget they build their Database by raiding other collector organisations, such as DAC and Wings. And sadly they don't recognise all model plane manufactures, often grouping several makers under one banner.

If you're feeling so hard done by DAC and Wings, why don't you volunteer your time and knowledge to a member team? Clearly your happy to moan and groan about how things are lesser than what they used to be, but are you willing to step up to the plate and help..?

Feel free to pm me or email me at
[email protected]
All info that is posted onto me is updated every 48 hours or so... much quicker then it used to be.

And... I've been privy to see what's coming, and its freaking AWESOME... I hope you guys at the very least have got the guts to write again once the whole site is up and improved out of sight, praising all those who worked so hard to do this... for all members and guests on DAC and Wings900.

Cheers Lou

Whats up with the airline logos - for quite some time we have the message - logo currently unavailable - both here and on W900. Is it just me or all have the same problem?

The airline logos use to be linked by some site and when ownership changed the person that had the logos wanted 7K... $7000USD a year for DAC/W900 to have them so that was rejected.

From what the new owners have said, we are due for a new updated database with even better hi-res logos and fresh updated database.

For now, ive simply deactivated the logo image option in my DB preferences so that way the airlines will simply show up as a text and I can easily distinguish the airlines.

Lose the attitude Lou. It is highly likely that most of the 20,000+ users couldn't give a toss about the site and you ought to be paying closer attention to the 100-200 regular users who do. Perhaps you could keep an eye on the forums for a start. I posted this about the Virgin Viscounts ages ago with no reply at all:

http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...acks-name.html

I'm not going to get involved again until I see some concrete evidence that the db here is going to survive. I too have been privy to inside info from both sides of the fence (including screenshots of the new db) and it remains to be seen in my mind whether the new database will be better or even workable. I can't say I'm dead keen to put my own effort into helping line someone else's pockets either. Having said that I am interested in what Christian is doing and am not saying I won't help. I just want some proof that the new people are trustworthy. As for MAS Media they appear to not care much either way concerning the db.

Actually. A few of us, including myself have volunteered, but got knocked back. So don't come in here with the attitude. I have said on more than once occasion I WOULD HELP. MASmedia aka advertising kings didn't want any help.

So now you were saying your going to fix the database? Good luck!

I agree Lance I offered also and got no response.
To Make.Me.Laugh - I will be happy to compliment you and your cohorts when things work liked they used to. As this stage I don't see any improvements and I find I go to DAC much less frequently than I used to.
I look forward to the day when I, the vocal minority and the silent majority are proven wrong.

G'day Richard & co,

Thankfully you guys are now up to speed with where to send any corrections etc for the DB. Happy to fix anything that needs fixing. But... Please don't feel compelled to stay if you don't want to, happy to remove you from the register if you ask.

You seem to be lost in not understanding that this is a member site and that all forum moderators and Database entries are done by volunteers. No-one is lining anyone's pockets, I am deeply concerned that you think this so. What little sponsorship money is made goes towards costs involved with hosting the site and the upkeep of the database. You're welcome to go out and try it yourself..?

Otherwise you're welcome to stay here. MAS Media are currently re-writing the entire computer script that runs this site, database and forums. It's very complicated not helped by much of the original computer script dating from last century. In the intervening years the previous owner never updated anything, but just simply added new to old, which is why the sites are having such hic-cups at the moment. MAS Media are presenting a whole new experience which will allow a fully interactive site for ALL members, not just the 100 or so you speak of...

So is it worth it...? I definitely say YES... and I'm a volunteer and proud to say so

Cheers Lou

Just a quick correction...

MAS Media are not who you or anyone should be contacting, Why...? Because they are not involved with the day to day running of forums or the database either on wings900 or DAC. The Team Members are and always have been the ones to talk to. And all Team Members are volunteers.

Contact me through wings900 and you'll see what I mean

Lou if that is true then why did MAS Media buy the site? They obviously want to make money from it - probably via advertising. Corporations don't tend to buy things for any other reason than $$. I understand the admins are volunteers though, however working free for a site run by collectors and working free for a company are two different things.

Incidentally MASMedia and Christian's merry band are two separate entities with MAS Media having no say (or much interest it seems judging by the e-mail I got from them) about the database. Christian seems like a nice guy however I would question why he and 6 other developers are creating the new database other than to see some kind of profit out of it. It may be they don't see any but I suspect that they expect too.

This is the website for Christian and the guys who own the database and are creating the new version. As you can see the new db isn't just about model planes:

HobbyDB

Once again I say I am not against the changes which may be excellent however up till now the changeover hasn't been very smooth.

Hi Lou

I am a web designer (making money) and I have my own sites.

You're welcome to contact me and I can show you how it should all done... Hence my displeasure athow this place is run. So instead of having an attitude, why not try and see if you can gain some help, rather than trying to act like such a hero and doing it alone?
Lance.

And I will just add, since MASmedia purchased this joint, we have had no updates as to what is going on, when stuff is happening.

No wonder people are unhappy

The airline name only appears if you call up the details but not in the summary chart. One can identify the airline, if the photo appears in the summary chart, but many times it does not.

Can we not replace the logo with airline name or add another column with airline name in the summary chart.

Just a thought

G'day,

MAS Media didn't buy the site, Hobbysphere did. Mas Media are the contractors brought in to bring the sites (DAC & Wings900) up to 21st Century spec. Clearly Lanceb, someone is feeding you the wrong info. Also Lanceb, if you're as good as you say you are, you ort to be overflowing with work and hardly have the time to offer your help here and for free?

I'm just relaying what the facts are chaps, no attitude here, just the facts ma'am.

And... gosh... what's so horrible in making some profit out of this..? It seems that the previous owners sold this site on, so using your logic, they're the bad guys here. Also if you think Waffel set up DiMA without the thought of making money from it, you're in fantasy land.

And for all of you who wonder why I volunteer my services here..? Well besides being an amateur industrial archaeologist... and researcher... I'm also President of a Media and Communications Company and extremely well off, so I'm happy to give my spare time and effort to this... why..? Because I love my hobby and this is giving back for the thousands of people who also enjoy the hobby.

There's nothing wrong about making a profit however asking people to do all the work for free and then taking the profit seems wrong to me especially when the site is owned by a corporate. Over at DiMA they don't need any help with the database as Michael keeps it up to date himself plus the site is owned by individuals which makes dealing with it easier.

G'day,

Sadly it seems none of you have ever been involved with community volunteering. Be it scouting (Boy Scouts), the local school community, possibly a sports club or maybe a car rally, possibly the Public Broadcasting Service, all these organisations and so many more are run as large corporations, with CEO's pulling in LARGE pay-checks, yet still require volunteers on a grass roots level.

How is this any different..?

My team..? I'm a junior Team Member, which you didn't actually contact, not one Team Member did you ask, you contacted the corporate owners and then got angry when they... they didn't reply. I'd hazard a guess if you contacted the CEO of Woolworths over something, he wouldn't reply either. Tho if you went to the store and asked at the front counter you would... same here...

Thankfully I've spoken with several other members who have offered their services voluntarily and even now are being brought up to speed on helping on these sites. Maybe you'll get to meet them..? But sadly, due to your stance I'd find it difficult to volunteer with you.

sorry Lance, burnt bridges and all that.\

Lots of chatter - but not much action.

Database last updated April 11th and Hobby Master releases have not been added since last year.

Airline Logos still showing "Currently Unavailable".

Currently updating Western Models, Witty wings and Phoenix models. Thankyou for the update about Hobby Master. Information is good. Do you have a list of models currently missing from the database?

[email protected]

Airline logos is indeed a pain, can be switched off and normal text for Airlines shown instead. Go into "MyCollection" and under preferences, un-tick 'show logos' and problem (for the moment only) is solved.

Thankyou for the heads up

Sorry, but I have done nothing but support this site for a long time. Providing content and photos. I am only saying what multiple people are thinking. No one knew anything about database updates until you posted in this thread with an attitude. So how did I burn bridges? Why not tell people whats going on? Why take so long to cominicated whats going on? What value have you added since joining? What content have you provided?

If you cant take constructive critasism, better get off the interwebs because its all srs biznezz.

Know what I am saying?

I think if members had the concerns, they would voice them... yes some have but the concerns have being addressed time and time again and its still not good enough.

As Richard said earlier, yes there 20000 plus members with 100-200 regular users and yet of the 100-200 regular users only a couple still address the issues that we all already know. The regular 100-200 members still come to DAC/W9 Forum to share in the interest of aviation.

I say, lets just wait and see what comes of it guys... Rome wasn't built in a day and had the forums foundations being regularly maintained and updated by the previous owners im sure we wouldn't be in this predicament to begin with. We all know whats going, and we all know what has to be done to get it sorted. I know myself and maybe others are just happy that something is being done about it so that touch wood.. we no longer have to face issues in the future.

Lets just wait and see guys, and if you cant wait that long... then go to DiMA... DAC/W9 will still be here, along with its 20000 plus members and 100-200 regular members and then when all gets sorted, its new secure here to stay database.

It is a headache to keep my collection updated with new arrivals. No airlines logos from a very long time and have to watch items one by one untill I find the model to add to my collection. This is not practical. Newest models don't even have images and that is a real madness to search and add.

I will do what make.me.laugh says, but please, DO SOMETHING!!!!

When will the KLM model i submitted be added to the database?

Am I wasting my time doing the same for the House color A380?

It has been a week and just 7 models have been added to the database.

Four on the 18th, two on the 19th, and one on the 21st.

At this rate you'll never keep up with the new releases.

Obviously keeping the Database up to date is not a priority for the new owners.

Dan

Still no Hobby Master additions

The above post was made on April 16th.

Today is April 29th and still NO ADDITIONS!

I even submitted a Hobby Master CF-18B five days ago - nothing added!

How about your honesty? Only one model has been added since April 21st.

The database is falling further behind every day.

Even submitted models by members are being ignored.

My main reason for coming to this site is to keep a record of my collection - without the database, this site will begin to die.

Seems this site will be dead end soon....TG I made my own xls file for the collection.
DIMA seems to be similar trash.

Guys, I cant believ this site is going down the drain....it was THE site for database and collections. Now you throw all the potential into the bin. Well done.

Not sure if it is just the database that is the reason. Across all available forums (DAC, Buzz, Wings900, DIMA, SH400, aviationdelight, UK diecast aviation forum), certainly not specific to DAC, there seems to be a complete lack of interest. Even non diecast forums such as PPRUNE have slowed down so perhaps forums are a thing of the past, something generation "me" is not interested in.

I think DiMAs database is excellent and the new features are great though I agree that the forum isn't busy and won't be until DAC and Wings900 disappear.

I find their database and update functions lot more compliacted and less easy to understand/overview than the ones we had here. What I miss on both sites is the mass bulk update....I just had to update 20xBA 737 Herpas I bought handish....no bulkupdate possible.
