Default Question abt Aviation400 A350-900 Cathay Pacifics

Hi all - I'm looking at acquiring a Cathay A350-900 and am undecided about which one to get. I have been interested in trying an Aviation 400 for it's highly revered mould/nose shape and the gimmicky beacon lights. I'm not a big fan of the cockpit window shape on the Phoenix. I like Gemini's overall shape (I guess, therefore JCs) but, anyway, this thread is about AV400.

I've seen photos of some of AV400's Cathay A359s to have a completely wrong belly colour while others seem okay. Trouble is, I am looking at photos of the same a/c registration from different people, but with different colours. Not all that surprising given that cameras adjust the colours and saturation automatically... but does anyone know if AV400 had actually adjusted their colours over the course of production (at least between the different registrations)?

I know Richard had mentioned the slight improvements to the aV400's A350 mould in the later productions to make the nose a little less pointy (if I recall correctly). Any clue at what stage this change was made?

I've so far seen the following a/c made of the Cathay A359:
B-LRA (AV4008)
B-LRB
B-LRU
B-LRX (AV4004)
B-LRV (AV4009)

Any collectors out there, or know about the details? Thanks

They definitely did adjust the colors. I have -LRX and it is good, but I had some of the earlier ones and the color was more of a baby blue which looked terrible. (-LXJ which is a -1000 is also good).

Here is a thread on it: https://www.diecastaircraftforum.com...fic-blues.html showing that B-LRV is one to avoid. I haven't catalogued all of them that came this way, but I'd say if it looks blue in the pictures, then it is.

That I'm not sure about either. I can investigate this more once I've unpacked.

I can definitely recommend the newer cathay a350s if you can get a hold of one. I've got both a350-900 and a350-1000 are both are very good 🙂 🙂

Thanks Denny!

Kind of frustrating I just typed a reply but it seems lost in the aether.

That link of yours was a great read! And that LRV looks horrendous! Good to see the Cathay Paciic 777 was made in 1:400 in the end. I agree the Panda Dragonair engines are a little too blue - but nor do I think they should be entirely white like on the Aeroclassics.

If I got the AV item numbers correct, rather intriguing to see the LRX being good (AV4004) and the LRV (AV4009) being bad. Going by the numbers, would’ve thought the LRV came out after the LRX. And if the LRV was bad then maybe the LRA (AV4008) will be equally bad... you don’t happen to have any of the other jets stored somewhere?

For my comment on AV’s update to their A350 mould, Richard had said in his review: “Some of the earliest examples had problems with the angle of the engines but this has been resolved. Improvements have also been made to the maingear trucks and tyres.” Not sure if maybe none of the Cathay’s are considered “earliest”? I don’t know. Their wheels feel a little big though when looking at them next to a JC/Phoenix.

Having said all this... maybe I could also choose to wait for an NG Model version -900? I already have an AV -1000 on pre-order.

Which are the “newer” ones? Would you have a list?

It was the earliest Cathay A350s by AV400:

Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 B-LRA AV4008
Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 B-LRV AV4009

which date from 2018 that had the colour issues.

The later releases:

Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 B-LRX WB4004
Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 B-LRU WB4005

Are fine. I have B-LRU - see below. Note that the later two are in a different sequence WB not AV (presumably for licensing dodge reasons since others in the WB line are Lufthansa) which is why you were confused about the sequencing.

There have never been any changes to the AV400 mould nose (it was the JC Wings nose that changed).

Thanks Richard. A very clear summary of the releases by AV. I did indeed see "WB" but thought it was a typo on a website. Didn't know AV went by WB codes as I've barely collected any AV400s.

This clears things up then, and will certainly avoid the LRA. I might just get AV's -900 (and not wait for NG's) since I already have the -1000 on pre-order. Would make sense to collect ones from the same brand given the similarity in the a/c, including airline.

I must've mixed up the nose job with the JC, as you've pointed out.

As for my earlier comment on the wheel size, doing a comparison of photos, I've come to a conclusion that the size seems about right, but the tyres are probably thinner on the AV400s than they should be (i.e. the 'rims', if I may, are disproportionately larger in diameter). The extra light reflection on the light coloured rims make it appear overly large.

You do some very fine photos of your models. Great lighting and angles, and without the blur that I get when I use a larger camera.
