She had to dump fuel, resulting in some pedestrian injuries.

Right off hand, I don't recall a fuel dump that low?

Can't believe all the whining cry babies over a little jet fuel on their skin and itchy eyeballs...

Wonder why they didn't dump off the coast instead...probably figured they'd get less flack by gassing people than from the radical environmentalist protecting sea life!

Normally you’re right, but there’s still a lot of details within the incident that hasn’t been brought to light without a proper investigation. FAA guidance state that they would need at least 5,000 so that the fuel doesn’t hit the surface. From my understanding, the aircraft was at 2,300 ft AGL when they started dumping. However, they could have experienced something that would’ve prevented them to climb to a higher altitude and I guess urgent enough that they had to start shedding weight. This could be as mild as a compressor stall or even a critical engine failure. The point I’m making with this is there’s still a lot of investigating to do.

I read that 67 kids at a Elementary school were also sprayed by the jet fuel dump.

Selected comments:
It's ok to take a dump anywhere in LA anyway.
Did They also empty the lavatories ?

If you look at Flightradar24, the plane departed with LadyJ Four flight plan, turning right over the bay toward Malibu. By the time it reached the area where I live he was over 7000'.

Perhaps the urgent nature of the emergency was why they descended and dumped over land.

Communication between ATC and the Delta Pilot. I am sure some lawyers have been in contact with all those that were impacted by the jet fuel dump.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

https://us.yahoo.com/news/delta-pilo...010055426.html

Recordings obtained by the Associated Press show discussions between the pilot and air traffic control at LAX.

The exchange begins with the controller asking if the plane wanted to come straight back, or circle over the Pacific Ocean to burn fuel. (Flying in circles is a way to lighten a plane for landing without fuel dumping.)

It continues:

Pilot: We're going to go ahead... We've got it back under control. ... We're not critical.

Controller: OK, so you don't need to hold or dump fuel or anything like that?

Pilot: Ah, negative.

It is not clear why the plane then jettisoned its fuel anyway. The FAA is investigating what happened.

Delta told Business Insider that the investigation into the exchange is still ongoing.

In an earlier statement it said the plane turned back due to an "engine issue" that required an immediate return. It did not elaborate on why the fuel was dumped where it was.

Delta on Tuesday sent overnight cleaning crews to the schools hit by the jet fuel.

The airline held a joint press conference with the Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District and the LA County Health Department on Wednesday, where officials said that they do not expect any long-term consequences for those affected.
