F-18 prototype desk model signed by chief test pilots
This extremely rare vintage F-18 Prototype desk model was produced by Northrop in the mid-1970’s. It has been hand-signed in silver by chief Northrop YF-17/F-18 prototype test pilot, Hank Chouteau, and chief McDonnell Douglas F-18 prototype test pilot, Jack Krings. Both pilots made numerous flights in this version of the “YF-17 becomes F-18” aircraft. Chouteau was a longtime Northrop test pilot. He flew versions of the 1950’s Northrop F-89 Scorpion. He also flew several versions of the F-5A and T-38 aircraft and made the first flight of the F-5E. He made the first flight of the YF-17 Cobra on June 9, 1974. Jack Krings, similarly, was a longtime McDonnell test pilot. He flew extensively in the F-4 Phantom and F-15 Eagle programs. He ultimately made the first flight of the fully developed F/A-18 Hornet on November 18, 1978.
