..and I'll give an extra 15% off to anyone who wants to collect them from me in person locally.

Big chance for some very small prices.

I thought 1:200 was dying? I thought it was impossible to resell anything, even at low prices? I thought no one wanted to buy secondhand models with shipping from halfway around the world?

I thought you had something constructive to offer. Then I saw it was you.

Nevermind then.

Mike I'm more or less giving them away in US$. I stand by my views.

1:200 resale market is almost dead unless you are selling super popular models. You only have to see how many A380s came out last couple of months to see - the market is saturated and a new model now represents an investment similar to buying a new car - you lose 50% of what you paid the moment it leaves the showroom and you have almost no chance of ever getting it back. Add in having to subsidise postage costs in my case and a ****e exchange rate hit GBP vs USD and it is pretty grim.

Too many new models, postage costs rising and already up to 50% of the value of the model in my case and for most people shipping internationally these days, model prices going up, a squeeze on consumer spend (most of us don't have $1000+ to spend every month on models) and the size of a collection of 100+ models means the resale value is rock bottom and only going to go down. Much of the demand for new models comes from speculators looking to make money, these will flock away from the scale for the reasons mentioned above, demand will flatten and the sheer number of releases will do the damage. The hobby literally will collapse under its own weight.

These factors are going to kill 1:200 stone dead outside of the US mate. You didn't agree with me then and you wont now but my views haven't changed.

I guess we'll see in 12 months.

FWIW I've decided to keep my 1:200 military collection for the following reasons -

* Space - they are tiny models and take up almost no space.
* There are only two or three manufacturers and releases are tightly controlled.
* I have more or less every single model I want in the scale and can keep up with everything I want every month.
* Releases are limited and new entrants to the market are going to discouraged because you cant mass produce the small fast air as they are made by hand and cost a lot accordingly. The market is too small to support new entrants and there isn't much that hasn't been done already so the business case isn't great.
* Postage costs are a fraction of 1:200 civil and manageable even for me here.
* Resale value when the time comes will be more or less what I paid and considerably more so in some cases - I'll lose some but not much and the enjoyment I get from them offsets this in my view.

TOGA is right, the way market is getting flooded with models, wallet, space, shipping have now become a challenge. this is why (and for other reasons) i even decided to skip JC tropical 747 from preodering. instead i bought 2 items for another hobby (i cant name here) during black friday sale

Whoever thought 1/200 were any good for investment did not follow the development in the 1/400 market. Therefore, yes, you are correct on the one hand (you cannot expect to get the money back you paid back for a model (at least, there's no guarantee) but on the other hand, it always depends on the specific moment. For example, I have not had any hurry when selling 1/200 models. The usual outcome was that I - most of the time - indeed collected a good amount for the models sold (or even more than I originally paid - and I am not talking about any specials such as Pan Am releases or American Airlines in the recent livery).

Of course, there's the opposite as well. I just sold a Hogan/Socatec Air France Concorde (the original Air France Museum release) at a much lower price as expected. I thought about at least(!) €100.00 (which is approx. $130.00), but finally booked €76.00 only ($99.00). That's the way the game goes.

Ah... and... PM sent!

By the way, I would live to finally receive the GJ200 model of the aircraft shown in your avatar... waiting weeks for a replacement right now.

This hobby isn't a reselling game, and its overall health can't be judged based on one guy's experience trying to liquidate a huge collection. It's as simple as that. Being based in Dubai doesn't help matters.

And as Madridista pointed out, many times, models absolutely do hold on to their value or even appreciate. Just about any Gemini 1:200 model produced more than two years ago--especially widebodies--now go for more than their original MSRP.

Yep and I had to pay $10 of the postage myself to make it attractive. Absolutely heartbreaking, one of nicest 1:200 diecasts I've ever seen, almost given it away.

Postage was actually 167 Dirhams / US$45.45 - thats quite a lot more than the amount i charged you. If i had quoted what it would actually have cost it was about $4 less than the actual model and you would have said thanks but no thanks and even at $50 i wouldn't have been able to shift the model. I've been underquoting most people i have been selling to on the postage as i tried getting them to pay the full amount postage before even with very discounted models and nobody was interested.

Sad but true fact of life i guess.

$50 + 45? I would have gone for that. Shipping prices are crazy these days, even on small items. I am accustomed to seeing shipping prices equal and sometimes exceed the cost of the original item.

Either way, $95 still beats the prices I've seen recently for this model, which are 130-170 + 30-70 shipping. I've never seen an IF tristar (new or old) for less than $100. Even my recent pre-orders have been (well) north of a century (plus shipping).

Anything up to $130 shipped would have been a bargain on this one in my opinion.

Postage is expensive, but it is what it is, that's the market. I'll be moving to Australia next year from the UK and I know that I'm going to have to pay more for new/second hand birds when I'm out there, just a fact of life, there's a lot of choice in UK and US as there's more retailers and collectors. Then there will be the import costs, but this is life. I feel sorry for you having to discount your postage to suit buyers, if they don't like the cost, then tough. I guess if you are in a hurry to sell then yes you will have to lower your prices more to attract a bigger market, but this is the same for anything, cars, houses, whatever.
As for the hobby dying out, I just can't see it. I would say it was growing in fact, there are a few enthusiastic newbies to the hobby I've met on this forum and also at a collectors fair, it suits a lot of folk who appreciate models but don't have the time or skill to build their own, the level of detail on 1/200 scale is obviously much better than 1/400 or 1/500 too which attracts a lot of folk.
Perhaps the investment in buying/selling 1/200 models is in decline but then again these things are usually cyclical anyway and depend on a lot of external factors which govern people's expendable income, such as the wider economy. For people who are not in this for investment but are just looking to really expand an awesome collection this lull in the second hand market can only be a good thing. This time last year I had one Astreus 'Iron Maiden' 757. After a long long time wanting to get into the hobby I finally got buying and my first 747 was a SAA -sp. Now one year in and I've built up an amazing collection of birds including some rare ones which I have purchased at reasonable prices.
It does seem strange that anyone would want to invest in model aircraft for profit though, I mean there are things that will make exponentially more return on your investment such as sought after artwork or something like that.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw my 2 pence in, not wanting to troll or hi jack the thread, more I guess just wanting to cheer everyone up. Sorry you have had trouble getting a fair sale on your models, there are some great deals you've had, just none fit my collection criteria I'm afraid. Good luck with your continuing sales though buddy

Sadly you are in an enlightened minority. I've been trying to sell that model for over a year probably and nobody has been interested at anything like a reasonable price.

I get probably three or four enquiries via PM a day for the model list asking for postage to Brazil/Mexico/Vietnam/Australia/UK/Canada/US - I quote them circa $26 on a $46-50 postage (even with very very discounted models as per above) - perhaps one in ten actually even bother to get back to me.

Everyone wants something for nothing and people just aren't prepared to pay for postage these days.

I will say if I am glad anyone got a mega bargain it is you though - fair play to you, you are a gentleman.

Everyone wants something for nothing and people just aren't prepared to pay for postage these days.

I will say if I am glad anyone got a mega bargain it is you though - fair play to you, you are a gentleman.
Once again, just because international shipping rates have increased and you're having a difficult time selling some less-than-sought-after-pre-owned models from DUBAI, that doesn't necessarily indicate that the entire 1:200 hobby is "dead as a doornail" (I believe that's the hyperbolic phrase you used).

Personally, I think we can pretty much discuss this TOPIC TO DEATH! All point of views are laying all over the floor and there's certain truth in almost every single comment on the (non-)death of the 1/200 scale market.

Summary: the hobby isn't dead as long as collectors buy what is released in sufficient numbers, but the second hand market gets weak if you are not putting one of the highly sought after models up for sale.
Generally, I would argue this has always been truth - disregarding the scale or even the kind of hobby. Obviously, our 1/200 scale models are produced in numbers that are absolutely saturating the market. In other words: the manufacturers have successfully defined the number of units to earn a maximum profit without having too many models in storage due to exceeding production numbers. Good for the collector on the first market, bad for those seeking a good or even a reasonable reimbursement when selling parts of their collection.

Never had the chance to go there. Been to Hawaii, that was the farthest I ever flew. On a big Orange CP Air DC-10
