Default What to do with this Lufthansa 747-400 Model...

Hey everyone,

I've got this Lufthansa 744 (1/100, space models). The decals are yellowed and the tail has a small chip out of the corner. The wings and horizontal stabs are fine.

I'm not happy with it as it is. So... I see a few options:

1) Have it repaired - new decals / tail repaired (is it worth doing with the cost?)
2) Sell it
3) Leave it as it is and hope the decals bleach in the sun

What do you suggest? It's bothering me at the moment.

Have new decals made and repair the model, yes it is worth the cost.

I have many Space models in my collection, some many years old including one that is over 40 yrs, and I've never seen such yellowing on their decals like this. I don't know how much you paid for this model but my inclination would be to sell it on. The fin repair is easy but IMO getting the decals redone and the fuselage re finished is no small task, however if you know and trust an expert and you really want this model then it might be worth doing.

You should fix the model and keep it!

Thanks everyone for your views so far...

I have been quoted £179 UK Pounds (about $260) by Westway Aviation Models to repair the fin and repaint the decals.

They would sell me a new one for £329 UK Pounds (about $500 USD).

Do people think this is quite expensive for the repair, or, quite good?

I recently got a mint/boxed condition 1/100 Space A340-600 in LH livery for £125. Westway will do an excellent job for you but this has to be your decision based on how much you really want that particular model, and if you do then thats fine. You may well find a similar 747 for the same money as my A340 or not much more. Also if at any time you wish to sell the model on, will you get the cost of this repair back? Reasonably priced Space 747s are around. Westway models are never the cheapest but the quality is very good. Anyhow this is just my opinion.....hope it helps

Hmmm...fix the model or buy a new one for twice as much. If you buy a new one, you can put the other up on eBay and take your chances that you'll make up the extra you spent on the new one. If you repair it, you take the chance that it'll be less perfect than you'd hoped. I say go for the new one and sell the old one.

If you're in the USA I would suggest you might want to contact Hans Pennell and see if he can help you with it.

It is worth keeping! For sure just have it repainted with a new livery. The tail is a simple fix.

Rui, that is a very sad picture. I had this happen to me a couple of years ago with an Iran Air 747SP which I found on ebay, the packing was pathetic. I got partial refund from seller. On the port side about half of the wing outboard of the engine was severely damaged. Although repaired its not perfect. The disappointment of opening a new parcel and finding that is heartbreaking

That tail can be fixed. It won't be easy and it will require the skills of someone who paints and assembles models. From what I can see, it will need to be held together with super glue, then the crack line filled and sanded, then by covering the round LH tail logo, repaint the whole tail blue. That should do the job, but one thing you may never be able to get rid of, the thought in the back of your mind, every time you look at the model, that the tail is broken.

Had a good bit of luck recently when I picked up a Westway 1:100 Iran Air 747SP from 1976 for $70.
