I still just don't get why such huge, expensive models---are painted like Woosters. I'd expect at least a BASIC grey paint pattern applied to the wings and stabs, if not panel-by-panel correct.

What? 5,000 GP for some wood (or plastic), some paint and a metal stand? Someone is smoking some fine herb there.

Well I would rather get a 1/36 Westway B747-400 aircraft model mint with that price than this crappy old looking model which the seller never stated the scale properly!!

Well, look ! They even have an airline flag for a very competitive price :
Airline Flag - British United Airways BUA - FULL SIZE - eBay (item 270589419996 end time Jul-05-10 08:20:41 PDT)

I think they did not only smoke something bad.... must be something more !

That price is wildly unrealistic and IF this guy knows anything at all about collecting these things he would know that. More fool anyone who pays it.

Being an advertising aid rather than a scale replica it is probably correct to describe this model and others like it as a 'giant Wooster'. IMO beautiful though it is, and I love 'em, its only purpose at the time it was made was to attract attention and show that BCAL flew DC10s and if you buy your ticket at this travel agency then you can fly on it too. In terms of the models in airline office foyers and the like, the main purpose of these was/is to cement the image of the airline in the eyes of visitors, employees and the like, much the same as a large perspex sign behind the receptionist. Some models from certain manufacturers do feature more detail, although not generally on the underside, some on display today don't even have hold doors and the like depicted. I have seen large scale DC10s that didn't even have the distinctive flap hinges. Some detailing was deliberately skimped to enable the model to survive the frequent journeys from agency to agency as most were only on loan to back up promotions etc. I was once told by a travel agency owner that the beautiful 1/50 KLM DC8-63 in his window was an award for reaching a specific sales target set by the airline (wonder where it is now!) Of course the other main factor for the airline was the cost to them for items like this which must determine the amount of detailing on the model. This DC10 specification seems about right for the era in which it was made.

This would be a reasonable price for a cutaway model with nav and cabin lights, but I estimate value of this model maximum GBP 500, or 10% of the asking price.
I felt sick of greedy sellers:::

Milos, what would you say is a fair price for a 50 and 72 scale 747 cutaway, with cabin lights, now that you mention it?

Agreed a cutaway c/w lights bumps the cost up due to extra work involved so 4 figure sums are reasonable.
Non-cutaway a tenth of that so £500 seems about about right
Unless you bought this?.....

Spacemodels BA B777 1/36. Yes not mega detailed But I think looks better for it. ( Gemini 400 BA 777 on top)

What plane are you trying to build? could one of the Entex/Dyosha planes work?, some came with cockpits.

You see that CO DC 10 cockpit ? That is what I want to try to do on the Doyusha 747 and L1011 in 100 scale that I have sitting in boxes .
The cockpit detail is lacking in those kits , so I just need to find out if its possible to get a scratch built cockpit replicated for the 100 scale a/c .

It's been quit a while since I worked on those planes and looks like you will have to scratch build a lot of the cockpit, but it is doable. On saying that, do you think you will be able to see the interior of the cockpit once it's done? Maybe now is the time to start doing it, maybe make some mock-ups, just to look and see what you have.

I just took a quick look and the window inserts for those kits are just a little bit thick so I would have to find something else to use for the windows in order for clarity .
Is'nt there a company in the UK that does display models and also restorations ?
I tried to get a hold of them before and the name escapes me.

He/they doesn't/don't. GBP 5,000 is way too much and anyone interested in this hobby (and, thus, with a basic knowledge) knows it. Such a 1/50 DC-10 model might go for less than GBP 1,000 - that's it. I have seen an (even larger scale, about 1/36) KLM A310 sold at around EUR 2,000 (which is equivalent to GBP 1,650)... but that one had interiors and lighting inside. That was a fair price, I think.

Remained unsold anyway. Or someone asked the seller to close the auction.

Yup. This model looks very badly maintained and yet the item is sold for a highly aggressive price. In fact , you could get a Custom made Pacmin with lots of features at that price..
