Thumbs up 1/33 scale Transavia Caravelle started !!!

Hello all!
I have started the building of my next 1/33 scale airliner. This will be a Transavia Holland se-210 Caravelle 6R (Ex United) without dorsal fin.
The livery is a special one that Caravelle PH-TRX showed in the beginning of the 70´s. This special "white Transavia plane" with an inverted black T in the tail and fuselage was an often visitor of my local airport and kept that livery until almost the end of her career with Transavia when was repainted in the normal Green colours.
This will be a huge and extremely detailed model like the Condor 727 and others.
Nothing done by now but i will post some pictures soon from the beginning to the completion of the model.
I will start with the engines and some separate parts and finally with fuselage and wings.

Hope you enjoy with the model. I will try to work fast to be able to finish the model before summer.

Have fun.

Why 1/33rd scale? This seems an odd scale as the nearest collector's scale is 1/32nd.

For some reason card-stock models of aeroplanes are usually made in 1/33 scale.

This particular niche aviation hobby seems to have originated in Poland - at least a lot of big names in card/paper modelling are Polish - due perhaps, to the relative lack of plastic models available during the 'Iron Curtain years !?

Whatever the case, the models are very intricate these days - masterpieces for want of a better word.

Perhaps someone from Poland can answer 'why 1/33

Yes, that is. 1/33 scale is in card modelling what 1/32 is for plastic modelling. I don´t know the reason but there is one. I remember have read that some time ago but i can´t remember why the scale converged in 1/33. The scale is odd, but only in the number because the planes are huge and attractive. Anyway, the Condor 727 was built exactly in 1/32 scale, not in 1/33 but i always said 1/33 refering to the model. i will post now the very first parts of the model i have just printed and cut out. All is card. Laser printed in white card and in adhesive silver foil. I made this kind of foil some years ago when started with these kind of models. I went to a offset printer house and i ordered about 500 A3 pages of a very thin gloss white adhesive paper (the one used usually for adhesives and labels) but "mass" printed in pantone silver (i mean all paper printed with the same colour). Now, i print the parts on this kind of paper. I use several shades of light grey for panels , when printed in normal white paper you only get white and grey areas but when printed over the silver paper you get a real bare metal panelling as seen in real aircrafts. The effect is so real...

Here are the pictures. I hope all these details will be useful if someone decide to do something like that. Let´s go! Put a huge Caravelle in your life.

"Don´t buy your dreams... build them!

Ok, here we go... the two first parts glued. Engine intake and first stage turbine. Note the ice detector pipe.

Some test parts for the caravelle, these are only black and white stencils with no detail but very useful to design the liveries (yes, there will be more Caravelles in all types...)
These are for the series 3, 6n, 6r and a future super 10b. The Transavia livery you can see in the pic is exactly the one i´m going to build.
I enclose a picture of a "sanded" 3 volt intermitent let for the anti-collision lights. I will show you how to do a real vintage rotating beacon with a 3 volt let. You can use it on any other model kit. No circuits, just a battery and the let. That will be this weekend.

Jesus, does this Caravelle look a bit more paperish/angular than its other card predecessors? I wonder if there is a "smoothing" trick to make the shape and contours more rounded.
Also, what's the life-span of these paper models? so much work is put on them, and when you said you used adhesive paper, I tought about the deterioration of the glue. It would be a shame if they started comming apart a few years after you finish them.

The problem is the Compound curve (they're a bugger) trying to get anything that starts out flat to curve in two directions at once is a tricky business...

I remember my Dad building an 1/200 Aloha 732 kit years ago and nearly tearing his hair out trying to get the decal to sit down on the fuselage properly - nowadays, for plastic kits, there are all sorts of clever potions that help the decal to 'sit down' on the fuselage but it's still a very tricky thing to replicate with paper.

Very rapid progress Jesus - those engines are amazing!

Edges between station is the original sin in card models. You can get a little curve close to the edge but not a complete curve all part long. Another thing is separate parts like nose in the Caravelle. I will explain how to get a perfect nose when arrived at that stage.
Anyway, these card models have to be seen completes, wait a little until the model be a little advanced and you will see... then the edges has no importance compared with the impresive effect of the huge model.

There are not differences in edges or curving method between Caravelle and other predecessors, but dont see now the first stencils in the pics, i have marked the edges because now they are useful and the little nose of the caravelle will be perfect. Look at the turbine bushing, they are paper not plastic and have been done with same method.

No problems with the materials, i use the adhesive only for bare metal parts and is used like metal foil in plastic kits. This material is very glossy and resistent and do not yellow, in fact is real metal. Humidity does not affect to this kind of card. My first models are more than ten years old and are like the first day. In fact, i have changed rubber tyres because of fosilization and on the other hand card is still white and new.
Card is a noble material and i can say for sure that has longer life that plastic.
The only thing is that you can not deep it in water.

Trident is stored. I made several fuselage test parts like in the pictures of the Caravelle above but now is a future project.
BDW, anybody know the passenger configuration for the old Transavia Caravelles? (Perhaps in an old timetable or leaflet...)

Everyone, hear this?
Jesús needs a PAX configuration!! That means HISTORICALLY ACCURATE INTERIOR DETAIL!
It's really fascinating to see all of this happening...paper into airplane model!
By the way, ¿en qué parte de España vives? La próxima vez que vaya me tengo que dar una vuelta por tu casa y robarte los modelos!!

Vivo en Alicante, but i won´t tell you exactly where because i take a good care of my models...

I´m not kidding, a PAX configuration will be very appreciated. If i cannot get the original, i will use a standard charter configuration for the Caravelle.

I´m starting now with the fuselage sections. Center, forward, nose and tail . I will post pictures of the empty sections soon but i have to do the interior and electrical system for a couple of lights before closing sections. That will take me a little time.

Finally, a test of the Rumbold seats common in Tridents, Caravelle, Bac one eleven, ... and many other in the 60´s and 70´s. Note the original Transavia Caravelle safety cards and Transavia brochure for 1971 in the rear bags. Now i have to make many of them, but for the moment i don´t know how many.
Anyway it will take me some time.
Also a part for internal panelling.

Have fun.

Little update here... Some pictures of the almost finished rear and tail section.
The airstairs work. The section is finished excepting for the seats and the overhead luggage bins. Center section is also started.

I tried to put one of these together about 15 years ago, it was a Delta 727...I lasted 2 hrs threw a temper tantrum as nothing would fit right and wound up giving it away....I suck at this stuff...Certain people on this forum are blessed with a talent I can only wish to have....Great work!

That should be about 3 times your 1/100, 6 times your 1/200, or 12 times your 1/400 747. I already can't understand where people store thier 1/100 747s...huge.

Hi Hola!
I´m still with the seats (about one hundred in 3 sections; front, centre and rear that you have already seen). I´m now with the front section and i will be posting pics soon.

Hi Jan:
I thought you had already seen these... Don´t you remember some time ago when i asked you about pics of some parts of the plane and also if they had a protective and anti sun yellow screen in the interior of windows?

Many thanks again for the information and the pics.

I can´t wait to be again on this project which is a little more advanced now but i´m now with the photorealistic Heatrow scenery in 1/400 that you have seen in the other forum and also i have another project: A 1/33 scale Comet 4B in old BEA or BEA airtours livery. Too many projects...and not too much time...arggg!!

Jesus: thank you for showing us your positively poetic model! I am a plastic airliner modeller but your example has made me think of card modelling. In this connection, where did you buy your 1/33 scale Caravelle (also 727, Trident, DC-9) card model kits? I have Googled around and had no joy.

He doesn't buy them, he does them himself!

WOW!!! This _floors_ me! (Yes, I noted he prints them on silver-coated card, but thought he buys the patterns from somewhere... In truth, I turned up a Caravelle on Google, but its quality is way, way below Jesus' standards.)
