Default 1/50 DC 10 Help!

Hello,

First of all I want to apologise if I have anything wrong here. I am not an expert....hence the reason I am here!

My family has owned a travel agency in the UK for around 30 years. I have been here for 16 and we have always had this display model in storage. I know little about it and where it cam from in the first place but on doing some research ( mostly in this forum ), I believe it is quite a rare thing.

What I do know is it was made by Space Models in Feltham and is a DC 10 in the Landor livery. I believe it is 1/50 scale but not 100%....it is about 3.5 feet long. I am putting an image below...hope you can see it!

Just really want some clarification on what it is and any other info really. It is not in pristine condition....some of the paint needs touching up and the stickers have yellowed. Also the stand was missing 2 poles which seem to have been replaced with an alternative.

Any help much appreciated. Thank you

Hi there. That’s a very desirable mode. It’s a DC10. Until a few years ago, I used to own a Lufthansa one made by Westway in the same 1/50 scale. Both Space and Westway were renowned model makers of display models. Unlike Space Models, Westway are still in business. I’m not sure I understand why you’re apologising for your post. It’s a lovely model, and I’m sure that we’re all enjoying seeing it. British Airways ‘inherited’ their DC10s following the takeover many years ago of rival British Caledonian. BA’s preferred trijet wide body of choice being the Lockheed Tristar. I’m sure that, that’s the reason that large scale display models of BA DC10s are not that common in any scale. You’re DC10 ‘earned her keep’ in a real travel agent, many of these large models have some ‘dings’ hazard of the job. If you should decide to sell the model, you’ll have no problem finding a buyer. Replacement stands are available on the website below.

A good site to try is www.aviationmodels-online.com/ It’s also a great site for buying and selling these types of model. Hope this info helps.

You are right, it is not a that common model of BA. Surely more rare to find than a B 747-400. I have a DC10 from Air NZ in similar scale or a little smaller from Scalecraft.

Funny though is, it is not BA's fav was the Tristar. Remember, they first didnt want the DC10 but then kept her and kicked out the Tristar.
I simply think the real reason you find models like these less than the L1011 is simply that they were already quite old when inherited. Usually you produce models when planes are leaving the production line.

(I am very thankful to him for this wonderful picture) and was downloaded from airliners.net ! It is not owned by me nor do I have copyright, but what makes a good shot even more popular than letting everyone see it ?!

I’m never too proud to learn, appreciate the info. With ref to the Tristar being BA’s preferred choice, I guess I should have clarified the statement by saying that it was the preferred choice of the U.K. government at that time, rather than the airline.

Neil.

Could have been both, Neil. BA and government. What I meant to say is, that it is not too common that airlines integrated planes serve longer than the companies original ordered ones. BCAL and BA is a good example for that.

While BA choose the L1011, they inherited the direct competitor DC10 with BCAL merger in 1987/88. While the Tristar was phased out pretty fast thereafter, if I recall well after first Gulf War 1991, the inherited "step child" served and proved to be popular until 2002.

Same goes for the A320. BA was never fond of Airbus, much to the anger of the europeans. They always opted for the 737's. But with the take over of BCAL, the way was paved for the direct competitor A320 and it proved to be so popular that BA never ordered any newer version of the 737 until recently. Opposite was the case, they ordered more A320's and even 319 and 321's.

I think daily service convinced the airline and rectified their first judgement.

Please put kotter pins thru both of those legs until you can find proper poles. It is extremely unstable like that. She's a real beauty! Your only problem will be shipping such a beast if you sell her. I wouldn't though. That is a wonderful model. Congrats.

Hi Rover192,

It's a nice looking model for it's age.

Once had much larger Boeing 747-200 cutaway model and had a large metal tripod stand, which was missing the two (2) pegs on it to support the model.

Drove over to a car repair metal body shop and had them weld on the two (2) pegs and that did the trick!
