Could have been both, Neil. BA and government. What I meant to say is, that it is not too common that airlines integrated planes serve longer than the companies original ordered ones. BCAL and BA is a good example for that.
While BA choose the L1011, they inherited the direct competitor DC10 with BCAL merger in 1987/88. While the Tristar was phased out pretty fast thereafter, if I recall well after first Gulf War 1991, the inherited "step child" served and proved to be popular until 2002.
Same goes for the A320. BA was never fond of Airbus, much to the anger of the europeans. They always opted for the 737's. But with the take over of BCAL, the way was paved for the direct competitor A320 and it proved to be so popular that BA never ordered any newer version of the 737 until recently. Opposite was the case, they ordered more A320's and even 319 and 321's.
I think daily service convinced the airline and rectified their first judgement.

(I am very thankful to him for this wonderful picture) and was downloaded from airliners.net ! It is not owned by me nor do I have copyright, but what makes a good shot even more popular than letting everyone see it ?!
