According to Secretary of State information, Wesco Models International was dissolved on 13 December 2000.

I’m sure that I was once told that at some point there was a ‘tie up’ between Wesco and Air Jet Advance Models, both being manufactured in Mexico at one time. Both companies now having been out of business for many years. I do have a 1/100 Continental A300 by Wesco, which has Made in Mexico on the underside of the fuselage.

Other members may have some more or different information ref Wesco. Be great to hear if they have.

Neil.

I did have a 1/100 Wardair A310, one piece on a stand, sadly I sold it and when I joined Airtours International in 1991 there was a model of the Airtours MD83 in 1/100 scale on diplay at the interview. It was made by Wesco, it was interesting because Airtours was still some weeks away before taking delivery of their first of 5 MD83's ordered from the factory and nobody had seen the colour scheme at that point.
I took note of the contact details on the bottom of the model and contacted the Company direct, by phone in those days. I was sent a printed list of all the available models and Airlines. I may still have it somewhere.

I used to have a 1/25 Airtours MD83, but that was made by a New Zealand company called Scalecraft.

Yes that is right the Engineering Director was Kiwi and he sourced the Airlines Models from that New Zealand manufacturer. The 1/25 models were in Going Places Travel Agents, I never saw one in the Airline Head Office at anytime. The only MD83 model they has was that Wesco model, by now damaged and crudely repaired.
I have been on the hunt for one of the 1/25 models for years but have never come across one. The fact they were in the Going Places Shops suggests there must be some about somewhere. Where did you get yours and what came of it? I have one being custom made by GB Aircraft Models, using Sykmarks Supreme as the donor so it will be on a stand complete with undercarriage.

I got my 1/25 model from a travel agency close to my home. It had been in their window for quite some time. The ending of the Airtours branding probably helped my chances of my being able to have the model. A quick phone call from the manager to Airtours HQ, and the model was mine. Despite his initially refusing to take money for it, I did persuade him to accept the sum of a few drinks. Some years later I traded it with a collector in Birmingham. I also used to own a 1/72 Airtours 767, also made by Scalecraft.

Well, one day I may come across one. I'm surprised they didn't want payment, Airtours were so tight its a wonder they didn't invoice you the full valuation price. We used to joke that David Crossland (founder, Chairman and largest shareholder) was so tight, if you shoved a peice of coal up his axx , he would shxt a diamond.

I’ve also got. 1/200 Egyptair 777 in their old ‘blue tail’ livery. When I saw it on their ticket desk in Luxor airport, I had to have it. Although the current livery was just about to be adopted, our flights were all on aircraft in the older colours. The lady on the ticket desk seemed a bit bemused when I asked if i could buy the model. She told me she didn’t think so, but she told me to wait and she went into the back office. I expected her to return with some postcards or something, but to my surprise she took down the model and placed it in this small cardboard box. I was very grateful and offered to pay, but she said that it was, and I quote, ‘a gift for a new friend’ and wished me a safe flight, I was really impressed. Although small, that little model has pride of place in my Egyptair collection, and I always think of that kind Egyptair staff member when looking at that model. That’s why I really believe that if you don’t ask, you don’t get these models.

I tried that Neil, I was in Bahrain around 1998 and saw a 1/100 CP Air 747 in a Travel Agent Window, it was long after CP Air had become ' Canadian Airlines' and changed scheme, but I was told it was on Canadian's inventory and they couldn't sell it.

Yes. That is sometimes the case. I did have a similar thing happen on my Luxor trip. I did try to persuade a staff member in a travel agents in Luxor town centre to part with a 1/100 Royal Jordanian A340. At one stage I thought I’d cracked it when the guy who I took to be the manager looked at the model intently as I was speaking to him. Whilst he was looking at the model he was stroking his chin. After what seemed an eternity, he apologised that he could not part with it. I didn’t press him, and left. These models are advertising aids after all, and as you alluded to, these models often don’t belong to the agents themselves.
