Default New Acquisition & Annoyed Wife

I just acquired (found on CraigsList) an American Airlines 707 in 1:50(?) scale. It's not in brand new condition, but hey...it's probably about 60 yrs old. It has a wingspan of 33" and is 32" long, and I believe it's made of fiberglass. Based on 1011N's help (thank you) identifying the stand, I believe it's a Pacific Miniatures model. I drove 1.5 hours each way to get it and I paid $300. I hope I didn't overpay (with my limited knowledge I don't think I did).

My mistake was I didn't tell my wife how big the model is prior to purchasing it. When I walked in the house she expressed her displeasure when she asked where I'm going to display it. Hopefully she'll get over it.

Well, I can see the wife's displeasure. That's how they roll. But that notwithstanding I think it was a good deal. And because of the bare bones livery any restoration should be "easy". Or just leave it as is.

Amongst other airline stuff, my spousal unit got me a pillow with a picture of DLH flags at FRA airport on the pillow case. It will go in the mancave.

Although, I suggested our bed, but you know how that ended.

I'm going to leave the model as is. I've never attempted a restoration, and I doubt I'd be good at it. I also prefer to leave vintage items in their "as found" condition.

The pillow was a nice gift from your wife...I think I can figure out where it did not end up. I have a couple of pre-WWII wood aircraft propellers. To me they're works of art, and I suggested that we put one on the mantle over the fireplace in the living room. I should have checked the weather report before suggesting that, as hell would freeze over before my wife would let me put one there.

Nice model.

Nowadays with any older objects, including cars, it's considered better to leave the "patina" as is, to avoid destroying the history.
Just watch Wayne Carini on cars....
Or what I do with old Hi-Fi, what I call "sympathetic restoration".

This actually a HUGE model, will your wife allow you to leave it on that table?

First off, lovely model. Second, you are lucky your wife didn't ask you to sleep in the car, with your new model.

Very nice indeed, and well worth the price. IMHO definitely a leave as is model, just a good dusting required!

She'll let me leave it on the table only until I find a place to display it.

I got a good deal two years ago for one of those rare- huge Lockheed Constellation Factory Models, All welded plate aluminum, 1:44 scale!! Did I say Huge!!

I am slowly doing the restoration. I was smart enough to suggest hanging the monster in the garage until the resto gets finished. My bride was understanding. Better off supplying a solution then creating a conundrum. The engines and props are finished, now it's to the rest of the monster. I might have been better off restoring a full-scale J-3 Cub!

Very impressive! The seller told me the 707 model was metal, but I quickly realized it isn't...I believe it's fiberglass.

Those engines and props are amazing. Please update us on the progress. I have a feeling my mouth will fall open, when this project is finished.

Nice addition and glad you are keeping it original! To keep your wife happy you should add some American Airlines dinnerware around the table with the plane being the centerpiece!

Thank you for the compliment on the model. Regarding your suggestion about how to keep my wife happy, I'm going to quote my favorite line from Monty Python's Flying Circus: "I may be an idiot, but I'm no fool".

Thank you for the suggestion. Although I got a good deal on the model, I'm running low on funds and not able to afford a divorce attorney.

jcahea - Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't feel like needing the services of a trauma center, so I think I'll pass.

On a serious note - how rare are 1:50 scale Pacific Miniature models like this?

Thank you. The model does have some condition issues...the HF antenna on the fin is bent, and one of the mounting holes on the bottom of the fuselage may be slightly stripped. From what I've seen I'm guessing models that are larger than 1:100 scale are more rare than 1:100 and smaller(?).

Happy New Year to you and everyone else on DAC.

My best catch (you won't believe my luck with this!) was a 1/72 scale British Airways L-1011 Tristar from Space Models. Somehow found it in a recycling center charity shop in a bag of other little snap-fit models (some nice BA ones in there), for £5! Gave the man who was bringing it in £5 before the charity shop woman could do any research. I think I was just in the right place at the right time.

Not sure what this model is worth, but scored this on ebay for $30.00 plus post so $45.00 in total. Its 38 cm long, so im thinking its a 1/72 scale model.

A lovely model. I think that the livery on that model is the one used by Fokker on very early display models of the F28. There are some great looking F28 models on the following site. Is it a metal one?

That's an interesting Verkuyl model addition for a nice low cost.

Below is what that model looks like with it's original stand:

Very nice model! Just sold an exact Pacmin one and scale like that last year. It is a 1/48th scale Pacmin Boeing 707-100A. I believe the length of that model is that of the Dash-80 or the very short 707-138 I believe. I have the Pacmin 720B in 1/48th scale in American Airlines. They painted it to look like a 707-300B Freighter... thats Pacmin for ya used what they had...but it is a 720B for sure. My favorite plane and know them well. Flew in one back in 2008 on one of the last 2 still flying at the time the Honeywell 720B test bed. Here is my model. I have been collecting for a long time. I have never seen another one of this model I have in all my years collecting in this scale ever. I have seen the Pacmin 720B in the 60th (pretty common) and 100th much more rare. But never in the 48th scale. I attached a picture of it. Has the turbo fan engines correct to scale length and the correct inboard gloves on the wings as accurate lower fin in the back as accurate as you can get. Enjoy!
