Default Canadian Atlantic Air Dash 8 Classic floor model

Just a few paint flakes, otherwise perfect fiberglass. 42 inches long! Ultra lovely lady. Unsure of maker but I suspect Space Models UK or possibly Atlantic Models in Florida.

Found in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and safely packed and shipped by the wonderful store owners at UPS Store 527 to me in Ontario, Canada. Huge shout out to thank these folks, it was no easy task to pack and ship such a large model. They really went above and beyond.

The story is that when Canadian Air Atlantic went out in 1989, a travel agency was told to get rid of the model. Someone took it home, and there it sat in a basement for the next 30 years. Then she came to me.

A very nice model, and rare I would think. Great that it managed to survive by being ‘squirrelled away’ for all this time. Do the wings detach on this model?

I was wondering that too, due to the wing droop that’s apparent here. Regardless, it’s very cool and a great find!

I had one of those many years ago in Miami. It had the same wing droop problem. I shipped it to Phoenix and sold it off.

Yes they are on two huge metal pins per side. Nice tight fit.

I don't consider the wing droop a problem. It is fairly common with larger models because of the weight of the wings. Yes, the wings connect at a bit of an angle, but whoever made the model did this intentionally. I think they did it because they knew over time, the weight of the wings would affect the dihedral... So, they fixed the droop at a stable angle. A more simple explanation is the loading of the wings with fuel in turbulence, lol. Either one works for me, this is a very cool prop floor model, with Canadian titles, and there's no structural damage whatsoever.

Nice find! Once again, my hat's off to you. I wish I had your talent for finding models.

I felt the same way not all that many years ago 1011Tristar. Then one day I emailed one very experienced collector whom I found on the internet. He just happened to be a fellow Canadian, and he had all these fantastic models that were published in an article. So, I figured what to heck, and I wrote him to ask "what does one do to find great models?" All I could find were plastic hobby store models, or 1:200 models of course. I was totally frustrated. Turns out I was looking in all the wrong places. As per his guidance, I started looking at estate sales, auction houses, antique stores, comic book stores, thrift stores (found two treasures at Value Village believe it or not), Ebay (I will admit Ebay was easier back then... Now Ebay is a feeding frenzy for decent models that end up being way overpriced) and other places, like Etsy.ca. You may not find anything for months, or you may find 3 amazing models in one week. But one thing is for certain: If you look, you will find. I look for a few minutes every day for the stuff I am really interested in. The law of averages will eventually break in your favour. However, if you do not look, you don't find. Luck is simply hard work intersecting opportunities. I find stuff because I invest the energy, these models don't just fall on me. Well actually, some do, but that was because I posted ads asking for people to contact me, lol. One collector I know has holy grail artifact level cutaways etc. Do you know how he found them? He would shop antique stores wearing a sandwich board listing the airplane models he was hoping to find in chalk. Follow the advice I was given, and repeating here, and you will be rewarded. Oh, and the guy I emailed? we're best friends now. Visited each other many times, done countless deals, and helped each other find lots of 3rd party deals. Expand your network, talk to collectors and try to find trustworthy ones who can help you and vice versa. Good Karma will follow.

Air Canada Collector - Thank you very much for the tips. I search CraigsList, and a couple of months ago I did find a Westway Viscount (Northeast Airlines). A couple of months before that I did find a Pacific Miniatures Eastern Airlines 727. Other than those two, not much except for a couple on Ebay a number of years ago. I'll have to try the thrift shops and estate sales, as well as networking. Please let me know if you hear of anything in the US, specifically the New England area. I'll do the same for you if I hear of models in Ontario. And you're right about treasures falling into your lap once in a while. I've had two pre-WWII wood propellers given to me over the years by people who knew of my interest in aviation. The first one was given to me by the father of my first fiance, who later dumped me. That was two gifts in one!

Thanks again, and be well,
Matthew

That's how you do it, just look more often. People like me will grab it if we see it first, lol. This Dash 8 was 3000 km and three Provinces away in an 80 something year old lady's basement, where it sat for 30 years. I had her bring it to a UPS store, where I arranged for them to pack and ship, and I paid her more than her asking price. This stuff turns up in very weird places. You may get skunked 200 times, but then that 201st time, wow! That's what I love about this hobby, when you find that gem it's like Howard Carter discovering King Tutankhamon's tomb. Keep your shovel in the sand, and dig my friend.

Very sound advice Air Canada Collector. It’s a formula that has served me well in the 44 years I’ve been collecting these things. As he says, do your networking and don’t overlook the charity shops and jumble sales etc, I’ve had a few very nice finds via those. I think that ‘the chase’ is part of the fun of this hobby of ours. So go find those models guys, they’re out there!
