Default Pacmin 1/60 727-100 Braniff 'Pucci' Repaint

Hey guys,

A fellow DACer entrusted this beautiful, huge model to me for a repaint into Braniff's famous Pucci "Jellybean" colors in a vintage Pacmin look. N7272 is the ship that will be replicated, seen here. The graphics for the decals have already been designed and next step will be a stripping of the existing paint. I'll update this thread with progress. Should be a lovely model when done! But first some shots prior to any work being done.

Shown here with some other models for a sense of scale. The Delta MD88 is Pacmin 1/100. Also shown is a Gemini 400 A330, Gemini 400 ERJ-190 and a 1/200 JCW 777. Can you even find the E-jet?

Along with a House Colors Pacmin 737-700 in 1/100

Looks like some putty will need to be applied on the engine inlets.

Thanks Joey. It does indeed look amazing as is. Can't wait to make some large scale models like it.. and this won't be the last Braniff livery I do.
The model is bathing in paint stripper presently. Pacmin has some wicked clear coats, but I'll get through it.

ps i emailed you some color swatches for the windows.

With the top half of the model successfully stripped, the stripper was applied to the bottom half as shown. This is called CitriStrip and it completely melted away the paint, decals and clearcoat. There is an odd feature to the model that all the white areas seem to be thickly "plated" with some sort of plastic that is not strippable. I have no idea how they did it, but its's certainly not paint. This creates a barrier with the non white areas, which are down to bare resin. The result is a Hoover Dam where sanding will be needed to make these areas smooth. Apparently Pacmin didnt like masking up for paint in the old days and found a workaround.

After the stripping and finish sanding, the model will then be primed. I noticed some potholes in the bare resin, so putty will be apllied to those areas. More to come......

WOW! That looks really messy! I am sure you will show me the holes after it is primed. Is it getting ready for primer now and did all the paint come off already ok?

Are you referring to the area on the front each side of the fuselage when it has aline slight indent?

Don't worry, it'll be completely smooth before any paint is applied. I got it under control. The bottom half will need to bathe in the stripper for another few hours.

There's no discernable lobe crease on this model. I'm talking about where the white meets the gray.

Quick update. The model has been stripped and sanded and is basically ready for primer. As previously described, the thick white coat which was unaffected by stripper, was sanded where it bordered with the silver gray to get it as smooth as possible. Where I was unsure if it was smooth enough I went ahead spot sprayed primer(Rustoleum rattle can) to check if more work was needed.

A thicker filler primer(Tamiya Surface Primer) was brushed into areas that were needed additional work, as well as areas where there were minor factory scratches or defects. Areas where there appeared to be bubbles or gouges in the resin, mostly the wings, were filled with putty(Tamiya white putty). I'll give the filler and putty a few hours to fully cure and finish sand those areas smooth. Then the model will be primed...finally!

Just a couple of little things to fix, but here's the model in primer. After it's fully cured, I'll wet sand to prepare for paint. Stay tuned!

Not the best painting weather the last several weeks but enough good days to get the model coated in base colors. The white parts have been lightly clear coated but the blue parts have only been wet sanded and will get a clearcoat once the silver trim and black nose are done. For the next update she'll be ready for decals!

Thanks! I swear by Tamiya tape for masking. I have the 2mm, 6mm, and 18mm. I can get the last two from my local hobby store but have to order the 2mm from amazon. It's awesome and its also low-tack so no worries about paint lifting or residue left over.

I have a small paint booth in my work area that vents outside, but I mostly use it for airbrushing acrylics and light spray painting. This model is way too big for it though so I have to do my painting outside.

Almost ready for decals(shown at the base). I'll put a very light clear coat down over the whole model and then finish this thing off!

Wow Neil! Another stunner. Hopefully the new owner will be suitably impressed, I know I am. Well done

Yah, I messed that up and didn't notice until after the final clear coat was applied. As the late, great Bob Ross said: "There are no mistakes, just happy accidents". Also worth pointing out that the cockpit decals are intentionally "funky" as the owner wanted them to be vintage Pacmin style, same with window colors. I would have chosen more window detail with a grayish palette.

Thanks a bunch guys! It was an interesting subject and was a lot of fun to do. I have another 1:60 Pacmin 727 underway that will be done in the red Braniff jellybean colors. More on that soon!
