Default Handley Page Herald

This is my newly acquired 1/72 model of this sweet looking short haul airliner. The Herald was a UK designed airliner aimed at the ‘DC3 replacement’ sector of the post war airliner market. For a few different reasons, the Herald did not fare well against the very successful Fokker F27 Friendship, 50 Heralds sold as opposed to the 500+ F27s. Handley Page’s decision to initially build and market the Herald as a four engined piston powered airline, lost them valuable time in developing the aircraft, whilst Fokker forged ahead selecting the RR Dart power plant from the start. My great uncle was employed at Handley Page Radlett, and worked on the electrical systems of the Herald. The type was a very capable and rugged aircraft.

My Herald is in the authentic Handley Page house colours of the era, and has a Herald metal insignia on the stand. This model is almost 60yrs old now. There is no makers name on it. The model itself is very light but it’s definitely not wood but has the feel and weight of plastic. Any ideas chaps? Either way I’m thrilled with this unexpected acquisition, hope you like her too!

Very special model. I love seeing such old models in such great condition.

In my youth I recall servicing a Handley Page aircraft and was very curious about the aircraft because of the unusual shape of the cockpit area on the fuselage.

Well done!

Thank you Skythings. I wonder if it was an Eastern Provincial Airlines one, or Maritime Central Airways? The design of the Herald was based on that of a Miles Aircraft one, heavily modified of course. Miles was acquired by HP. An interesting little fact was that a modified military version of the Herald with a rear loading ramp was pitched by HP to the RAF. It was only because of the fact that Sir Frederick Handley-Page refused to become part of the newly nationalised UK aircraft conglomerate that ensured, due to government policies of the time, that the Hawker Siddeley’s HS748 derived Andover won the tender. This was despite the fact that apparently the RAF preferred the Herald derivative to the Andover.

Thanks Rui. That means a lot to me.

Neil.

An interesting model. The fuselage length might indicate the planned but unbuilt Series 600 version?

Hi MSR777,

It's a really nice looking model.

Thanks or posting the pics.

That’s interesting. According to what I’ve been able to find out, ‘WA was the third production Dart Herald. It was one of only four -100s ever built, three going to BEA mainly for their Scottish Highlands and Islands routes. The main production variant was the -200 series which had a fuselage stretch from 71 to 75 feet over the -100.

Hi Robert. Thanks for your kind words. I like the Herald insignia on the upper wing surface. Another rare model. I’m in negotiations for another Dart twin, should I be successful, I’ll open another thread for it, and no, it’s not an F27

What a great model, worked on Heralds in the 80`s and done my apprenticeship on them.

The 100 series is different indeed, different refueling system and a shorter fuselage. Always be careful jumping out the front crew door, as the prop is much closer than the longer 200 series !

By the way im desperate for a 1/200 model anyone?

Thanks for your kind words and for more info on the Herald. Many years ago I used to work with Air UK Heralds whilst employed as a Traffic Officer by a handling agent. I only got to fly on a Herald once, it was operated by BAF. Hope you find the 1/200 model, I’m sure somebody released one, but I’m no expert on the 1/200 scene. But there are some members on here who are

Thanks. It’s amazing to think that this model is around sixty years old. I’ve often wondered whether it once graced the desk of a Handley Page executive, maybe even the great Sir Frederick himself!
