Default What Was Your First Model?

Inspired by a fellow member in the 1/200 section, I was wondering what was the first large scale model in your collection?

Mine was 1/100 Wesco DC9-50 in Hawaiian colours, which I purchased in April of 1975. So come on guys, let's share the memories!

Neil.

My first display model was the 1/100 British Airways (Landor) Boeing 747-400 by Space Models.

My second model the Executive Display Models 1/100 BOAC Super VC-10 (my most cherished
model).

I still have both of these models.

Most of my collection of aircaft models comprise of airliner plastic kits (FROG,Airfix,Revell
Entex etc...........)

Hi Neil,

Mine was an Airplast Milano Boeing 727-200 Iberia scheme. This was back in 1985! It was given to me for free because the cleaning services for Iberia´s Valladolid Main Office snapped off horizontal stabilizer and aft component as well as number 2 exhaust was missing.

Funny to say but 32 years later I´m restoring the same model (not my aircraft,) same scheme and...same damage!

Manuel from way too humid Bilbao!

The original Tomkins Executive Display Models are, in my opinion, the best large scale airliner models around, and sadly they're not made anymore? I'm fortunate enough that I have many of them. I'm pretty sure that Brian Tomkins was the first to make the large 'travel agent style' models available to the general public in the U.K. Manuel, good luck with that restoration.

A nice'n'heavy Lufthansa Boeing 727-100 made by a Spanish company called "Mecater" probably around 1964, when the first 727's were delivered to LH. I purchased it on German ebay in 2002.

I agree with you ! I have the 1/100 BOAC Super VC-10 but regret not having
obtained other models in this series - ESPECIALLY the BEA Vickers Vanguard.

The Vickers Vanguard seems so rare that I never seen even ONE photo of this model on the
internet in the 20 years that I have used the internet !!!!!

Don't know the scale, don't know the manufacturer, but it was a diecast TWA B727. The main and front landing gears could fold into the fuselage, was a real piece of work. I think it was smaller than 200, and definitely larger than 400. Was given to me by the owners of a house my parents were looking at back in the 80's...without their son knowing. I felt bad about it years later but at that time I was quite excited!

That sounds as though it could have been one of the Aeromini die cast airliners. They're were around 1/250 scale I think, and had quite intricate and well made retractable landing gear, especially on their 747!

Thanks for the tip! Will check the web for pics of Aero minis. When I really got into this hobby I was hoping to figure out who made that model from the early 80's.

I've always liked the Vanguard. I was lucky enough some years ago to have flown on one from Malta to Heathrow, or London Airport as it was known back then. I do have a mint condition 1/72 Skyland Vanguard, in BEA colours of course! It has a genuine Skyland box with a BEA company label on it, addressed to a Captain who was living at a south London address at that time. It has a 1962 postmark on it.

Hi Neil and all,

Mine is a 1/50 Fratelli Cesana Milano model of a SAA B747 'super'300, that was hanging from the ceiling of a large junk shop in the deep French counrtyside!

I owned it very cheap, but i had to go get it with a scale .....it was 22 years ago.

Luckily the stand was found shortly thereafter on EBay.

It was the first of many, but remains the biggest!

My first model was a 1:200 scale Royal Jordanian A-310 from Flight Miniatures. Still have it and have only recently complemented it with a Space Models version in the same livery and scale.

If we are talking actual first model, mine was a Matchbox 1/72 Dornier Alpha Jet plastic kit, circa 1981 or so. It wasn't until years later I got my first diecast and that was in 2003, a Gemini Jets 1/400 scale Aer Lingus Airbus A330-200. My first 1/200 (and I don't have many) was a Gemini Jets British Airways Lockheed Tristar 500.

With acknowledgement to fellow member Aussiejets, who opened a similar thread in the 1/200 section. I think its quite ok to tell of your very first model, irrespective of the scale or the material, be it plastic, plastic kit, resin, fibreglass etc. It's just good to see how we all got 'hooked'
