Default P3-A Orion Cuban missile crisis.

Hello All,

I acquired this Topping 1:43 scale model 4 years ago. The wings were broken in transit. Took us 2 years to figure out how to re-attach them (the model is made of Bakelite, like the old telephones of the 50's and is very heavy). We joined the two wings with 2 steel rods that run between # 2 and #3 engine and lowered the fuselage onto it and then sealed it all with a very strong commercial compound. I wanted to recreate the very same plane you see on footage from 1961. The plane is flying over Russian transport ships on their way to Cuba and were stopped with a blockade. 2 more years worth of painting, (needed 3 shots at it to get it right). Bill, at CANMILAIR decals, agreed to help me with all the white decals. VP44 was the squadron. LM was the Sqn designator and the A/C seen in the video is 150497 and the line number 4.

I am not sure what I will do with it. I need to let it go!!! Some postings here talked about patience with Westway etc. It isn't easy to put a time line on a huge project. Things can go wrong. But, I am very happy with the way this came out. It is about the same physical size as a 1:50th DFM DC-8. Very hard to manoeuver in the paint booth, since the wings don't come off.

PS: It isn't clear coated yet...

Enjoy!!

Al

A very nice model, surely one of the rarest P3 models around!

I would expect nothing less from your workshop Al. It looks great. Very nice. I would love to see what it looked like before you started the restoration. Do you have any before images?

Well the livery was OK, and I would have loved to leave it alone. But in order to re-attach the wings, we had to break it all up underneath and it was so invasive that it damaged a lot of the paint. The body is hollow and light but the wings weight 3 to 5 lbs each. So, we couldn't just glue the wings on. We had to lower the fuselage onto the wings. I'll tell you one thing: Those wings are not coming off!!!!

I bought it off Peter's site and it is still listed there. Maybe the seller had 2 of them. I don't know.

Anyway, maybe one of my last !!!!

Al
