Default Vintage travel agency-style models

I notice that several members of DAC collect large vintage travel agency-style models by PacMin and other suppliers. Many of these models are damaged, due to shipping accidents or simply due to their age. Some have yellowed fuselages, missing tails, broken wings etc.

I'm curious about repairs to these models, particularly involving sourcing missing parts like engines or repairing torn decals. PacMin is still around, but some of its contemporaries are no longer.

What do collectors of these large models do with regard to repairs, build from scratch, cannibalize other models, order parts from those companies still in business, appeal to other collectors for assistance or???

Just curious...

Over the years, I've repaired a fair few models of this type. I've been pleased with the results on most occasions. But I know my limits. I had reason to contact Pacmin on one occasion, to obtain a replacement stabiliser for my Pacmin 1/100 A350XWB. The replaced it, and not only that, they provided an additional one, no charge for them or the shipping to the UK. That's what I call first class customer service.

Robert's advice is excellent on topic, especially as he's on the same side of 'the pond as yourself.

Neil.

As Neil as mentioned above, PacMin has also provided me with various parts including a few large metal tripod display stands, wooden base stands, stabilizers, wings etc, over the years.

My advice: Stay away from Westway! They have a metal model from me that I sent them over a year ago for restoration! Nothing is done. Communication is terrible. Emails mostly just get ignored. I am not sure if I will ever get back my model.

That doesn't sound good. They could at least respond to your emails. I heard that the owner is planning to retire in the not too distant future.

So Doug Dunn is set to retire? Does this mean that this is the end of Westway? He did two very nice cutaway restorations for me within the past two years. Sorry to read this, if it's true.

That's how it looks. Last December, I ordered and had delivered a 1/72 Valkyrie model from Westway. During my conversations with Doug at the time, he told me that he was looking to retire and call it a day. As far as I remember, he made no mention of a time scale, or of selling the company on as a going concern. At the moment, it seems that Westway is still trading, and the website is still live, but it does sound as though an original British maker of airline display models, may be no more. That'll be a sad day indeed.

Neil.
