Default 1:50 DC-8 / Henry Tenby / Douglas FM

Can anyone comment about the Henry Tenby produced "repro" DFM "DC-8 Models" in 1:50 scale. Quality? Price? Value? Shipping? Your overall satisfaction?

Would appreciate collector advice about these recently reproduced airliner models.

Thanks - ranchero -

I had recent dealings with Henry and he was a first class act all the way. Shipped a Fermo DC-8 to me which was well packed and very fast reasonable shipping at cost. Easy and fair to work with. Nice guy.

IMHO his reproductions look great and I would love to own one of his CP Air DC-8's sometime in the future. I had inquired about one about 3-4 years ago and if memory serves me correctly , I believe they were around $3000 for a CP DC-8 including a wooden shipping box. I have noticed other livery's for sale for less. I think he only does a small run of blanks and then paints to your request. I have not noticed him advertising them recently. Not sure if he still offers them.

As fas as holding their value, you should buy an original DFM to guarantee that, if you can find and afford one. But I do suspect 30 years from now, people will point out that one special DC-8 up on the shelf and proudly proclaim, "that's a Tenby" and it will be very expensive and hard to find.

Here's a link to Henry Tenby's website, for his Repro DC-8 Metal Model Airplanes:

Cast aluminum 1/50 scale DC-8 models

Hope that this info helps.

I produced an initial batch of 20 of these models a few years ago (the minimum production run from the foundry).

Over the course of about 24 months I sold them all ... at a rate of about 1 per month.

At the time, the price of the models was $2000 for a white crown paint scheme model, or $2400 for the multi colour CP Air scheme .. of which we actually sold 4 models.

That initial production run is now completely sold out.

In order to make more models, I need to do another production run of 20.

I need pre orders for at least 8 models to commit to another production run. As I have had no interest an any pre orders, there has been no follow up production beyond the first batch.
