Nice one Robert. I still think that Landor was the best BA livery ever used.

A model that size with such a pitifully minimal amount of detail... waste of space, I say.

These types of models are not intended to be scale replicas. They are advertising aids for the aerospace and travel industry, and related businesses. The majority are used by aircraft manufacturers, to 'woo' potential customers, and to offer as 'executive gifts or awards. In the great majority of cases, it is the airlines themselves, and the aerospace manufacturers, that specify the level of detail on these models. These models have to be robust, as they're sometimes displayed in busy environments, where appendages such antennas, landing gear etc, would be vulnerable to damage. No cosy life in a display case for these babies!

Some big manufacturers do commission highly detailed models, these are usually, but not always, in very large scales for exhibition/display use. Extra detailing costs, but in the main, the airlines don't go for it. If you're after the level of detailing common to many of todays 1/200 models, on these larger scale ones, then its a case of spending mega bucks, or building a kit.

You're telling me. I first thought 1/200's take up space but now I've got models spilling into 3 rooms.

Secondly. I disagree 100%. Sydney Aviation Group make great models as big as 1/24, with all the detail you could ask for. I have held a 1/100 model of theirs, but I had to let it go as it was damaged and I made an insurance claim on it, but another is being made now. And it was cheaper than Pacmin, by alot!

What's there to disagree with? What was said was true. Airlines don't pay for the detail and the large travel agents models are not meant to be like your KLM model. That wouldn't last a minute in an exhibition environment, on a ticket desk etc. When airlines order 50 or 100 models they are focused on cost and extras like shading the CF6-80C2 engines like you have on yours just isn't worth it for the airlines.

That's the difference between collector models (like yours - one offs, bespoke with gears, registrations, wipers etc) and the run of the mill PacMins / Space.

You do get some airlines (e.g JAL and ANA) paying for more detail but not too many.

Which they then extract out of you 4 times over what they pay.
