Default Biggest/Smallest

Just for a little bit of fun...here are the biggest 747s in my Qantas Group model collection, (two 1:50 747s that I refer to as the "twins". 747-300 is a Scalecraft (NZ) model, while the 747-400 is from Space Models). Can ya believe that these were going into a dumpster!!! before I managed to save them, and give them a good home. I dread to think how many others were not "saved"

and here is the smallest sitting on the biggest, (a 1:1000 Herpa).

Wow - what beauties! Wonderful.

Tell us - what do you think comparing the Scalecraft and the Space Models together in terms of accuracy and quality? I've got large space and scalecraft and i find the scalecraft to be lighter (hollow in side probably) and not as glossy...

Sad to hear airlines continue to throw them out - I've managed to save a few this way too (including a large BAe 1-11) that was heading for the trash. Such a shame.

Hello QF707,

Wow! Great pair of large Qantas Models Airplanes.

Don't know how and where you found them before they were headed to the dumpster but, it's truly great that you were able to save and now preserve these two models.

Regards

Very nice pair of 747s!!! Well done!

I always wonder how many models were thrown away in the past decades - especially the really old ones... Imagine the airlines dumping old prop-models or first-generation jets after new aircraft had entered their fleets. I wish I could have saved some of them in those days like you did!

Here is another one of those 1/72 Skyland 747's in the PIA colors. Not mine but whoever it belongs to, he has appropriately shown his biggest and smallest too. I have one of these as well but in another airline.

Back in the late 70s, my younger brother and I found a 1/50 Westway Iran Air 707, in a skip that was in a backstreet in central London. It was great fun getting it home by train

Speaking of which......here are some of my Skyland 1:72 Qantas jets

Boeing 707-338C:

Boeing 767-238ER:

The 707 was found in an old vacated Qantas engineering office at Melbourne Airport. It too was destined for the dumpster during a big clean-up.... until that is, a very astute personal assistant of the site manager called me and asked if I wanted a "really faded, dusty, and yellowed yucky old model" for my collection, (my Qantas Group model collection is quiet well-known within the airline, and this has proven to be quiet advantageous on occassion), I simply said "yes please"

I rescued a 1/100 scale UTA DC-10 from a bin many years ago. It used to hang in a local travel agency above a real set of QANTAS 707 1st class seats. I got to know the travel agent really well & told her that if they were ever going to get rid of the seats that I would have them. One day I went in there & the seats were gone. She apologised profusely & explained that a clean out occurred on her day off & asked me if the DC-10 model would be a good substitute. She went out the back & retrieved it from the bin. All it had was a broken wingtip. Still, I would have loved those seats!

I have my eye on a Pacmin 1/100 Kuwait Airways 777-200 and a Westway 1/36 Kuwait Airways cutaway 747-200 which has literally been to hell and back (2 engines missing, 1 hanging down and 1 intact, nose area smashed with pieces missing, upper deck area full of cracks and duct taped together) which are sitting in this run down travel agency, covered in layers of dust but the 777 is in pristine condition and when I went there to look at them the screw holding the 777 to the stand was so loose, it was just a few threads short of falling off so I tightened it as much as I could and made them an offer but they refused saying the airline had 'awarded' them these models for good sales many years ago (Kuwait doesn't even fly here anymore) and they didn't want to part with them at the time so I left it at that. Its been well over a year now and I need to go back and hopefully they will still be there even though the travel agency didn't look like it had long to survive.

Love those 1;50 Qantas 747's!!! Nice save and shame on those who chuck 'em out!!!

I saved a 1;100 ANZ 744 in old colours from the dumpster too!! Broken wing tip was the only damage - until I dropped it on a tile floor!!

I'm afraid I no longer have her, along with a Kuwaiti one of the same scale, she went to a collector in the US, where I assume she still lives.

That 707 of yours looks great, I love those 60s/70s era liveries. Skyland made some very nice and varied models.

Hi QF707,

Thanks so much for sharing your pics of the two wonderful large scale Qantas 747 models!

I had this large scale cutaway Boeing 747 with Ericsson livery colors for a long time.

I had found it in a pile of trash outside an old science museum that had closed.

Can't even imagine how many of these large scale models have been discarded over the years.

Regards, Robert
