Default dragon 1:72 F/A-18E and F-16 Scale?

Hi, I am brand new to the Die-cast airplane hobby. I am more into the modern jet fighters, and my first 2 I bought were the Dragon 1:72 F/A-18E and F-16.

I noticed that the scale between them side by side is pretty substantial, are the F-16 in real 1:1 alot smaller than the F/A-18's, or is this a scale problem with Dragon?

Well the F-16 is fairly small in real life compared to the F-18. Check out my F-18 vs F-16 picture, this is witty wings so you can compare it to your dragon wing

Yeah thats about the same scale difference for the dragons for the f/a-18 and f-16 on mine. I guess the falcon is just a smaller bird....cuz look at the f-14 and f-15 they are about the same scale as f/a-18. Cool thanks, just wanted to know since I am new to the hobby and modern jet fighter knowledge.

I am waiting to get my Century Wings Grim Reaper, Dragon F-15E, and Dragon F/A-18F jolly rogers in the mail, all 1:72 diecast. Cant wait to finally have them at my doorstep!

Looking into getting a 1:72 A-10 and Dragon 5-15C next.

You should also look into Sky Guardian (also known as Witty Wings). According to what people told me, they made the best F-18 and F-15.

You also need to check out Century Wings for the F-8, A-6 and -7 and F-14, Hobby Masters for planes like the F-104, F-100 and F-4, and Corgi for British and Russian aircraft. All pretty good models in 1/72.

Welcome UPDOG to both this forum, and collecting diecast airplanes in general.
Personally I find the 1:72 scale the most fascinating, specially for jetfighters.

Answering your question : F-18 hornets are a little bit bigger than the F-16s, but you happen to have a superhornet in your collection, which is about a 20% bigger than the old hornet. Hence the big difference in size.

This are a Hornet and a Superhornet from my collection, both from Dragon. Sorry 'bout the low quality.

This manufactures screw up very often in a lot of details, but never the scale. That's something you can count on.

I would strongly recommend Witty Wings for F-15s, which are now very cheap and the best in quality. Also for Mig-29s, and Su-27s.
Dragon for Hornets, and Hobby Masters for f-104s, A-10s, and F-4s.
...and the pricey Century Wings for tomcats, and a couple more...

Enjoy your stay!

yea witty wings are fairly cheap now, I got each one for 29.99. The F-15 was the cheapest, I got it for 19.99.

Some retailers are making them 50% off like Diecast Airplanes: Diecast Airplane and Aircraft Models. Your collectible aviation source for Corgi, GeminiJets, Model Power, Dragon Wings, Century Wings, Realtoy, Motormax, Hogan Wings, Skymarks, Herpa, Jet X, InAir, and Franklin Mint Armour

Thanks for the warm welcome, and for all the responses to my question and suggestions for future planes/companies.

For now, early in this hobby I kinda like the Dragons/Century Wings because of the option of having to display in flight or having landing gears down...and I really like that option right now in this early part of the hobby for me(plus I like to do mock flying with these badboys in the privacy of my studio, lol). Later on in the future of this hobby for me, I might get into Witty Wings and their fixed landing gears, but for now if I had a choice...then I gotta go for the die-cast fighters with the option of landing gear and flight option. That leads to another question is there a reason why witty wings only does jets with fixed landing gears, or are there any inflight fighters they make?

Is there a 1:72 die-cast Mig-29 in flight mode out there?

Was thinkin about picking up another Dragon F-15, I have the F-15E but I was looking at a F-15C in the near future, but I want one with a huge payload...fully stocked(I'm a whore for tons of ordnance on my planes) Any suggestions guys? I kinda want like 2-3 drop tanks and more missles/bombs the better. I was looking at the f-15c gorillas version, is there any other Dragon f-15c's with a huge weapons load? Maybe I will get a Witty Wing then..?

Anyways definetly appreciate the feedback and insight on certain fighters/companies from you guys. Anymore thoughts are always welcomed and valued, thanks people!

Nope, sorry, no Witty in-flight models. They all come with fixed landing gear, which personally I don't mind. The reason Witty Wings does this is...ehhh...well nobody knows but, anyways, they make nice mig-29s with fixed landing gear. If you wanna inflight check Corgi's fulcrums.

The mule (http://www.theflyingmule.com) has only a couple starting at $25.

On Mark International http://www.onmarkint.com has some too, and they ship for free inside the U.S.A if you buy any 2 items.

This are my 2 preferred websites. Shipping is via ups and is always on time.

Good hunt

Personally I don't think there's a single 1:72 F-16 really really really worth buying so far. I don't like Dragon's nor Witty's. It may be also that i'm not a big fan of the F-16 either , and that's why I won't settle for any of those...

Hi all - I am new to writing in a Forum. I have just purchased a Black Top Gun Dragon 1:72 F/A-18B and two pylons are armless. I, too, like loads of weapons under my wings and was wondering why trainee pilots weren't given weapons training. 'Nuke 'em' as they say! I was thinking as there were so many Hornet variants I could stick Smart Bombs, TV Guided Missiles or just the Heat Seaking type from my 1/72 model armoury from years of model making.....and would they be black too?

I see that your Super Hornet is wearing some Smart Bombs so I'll do the same with my F/A-18B which has empty pylons either side of the wing Drop Tanks. It must mean that Top Gun trainee pilots used up lots of fuel!

I ended up getting the Witty/Sky Guardians F-14 VF-143, since that's the only maker that has the Pukin' Dogs available. I'd also like the F/A-18 VF-143 too, but later on. Century makes the A-7 and F-8, both outstanding models. I think I'll go for the A-7 SLUF when it comes out.

I got mine at Aikenairplanes.com
Very friendly, even though they list it as $69.95, I e-mailed them and they were able to give it to me for $59.95 total including shipping. They ship from Tennessee.

Other retailers that sell this particular Jolly Roger would be:
Crossroaddiecast- Chase City, Virginia for $74.95

Onmarkint- Jenks, Oklahoma for 69.99+ Free Ship

bacdiecast- Texas 54.55+8.50 shipping= $63.05

Joepilot - Pennsylvania for 57+9.95 shipping=$66.95

I believe those are the last remaining sites that still sell the Jolly Roger, after that its all gone- maybe forever since I believe Century Wings will no longer put out any more F-14 variants.

If the Jolly Roger is not that important to you, you could probably look into crossroadsdiecast, they sell a combo pack: both the F-14A Black Knight and the F-8E for 79.99. So in reality each aircraft cost 39.99. you can find it here
Century Wings Combo Pack F-14A VF-154 Black Knights and F-8E Fighting Shamrocks (1:72)

Hahhaha yeah. It comes with a poor weapon load. Beautiful bird though, one of my favorites.

About the fuel, the old hornets had a very limited fuel capacity, and you know my Top Gun boys hahhahha.

So did you just email Aiken for a discount or are you a frequent customer/friends with them? This would be my first time ordering with them.

Top Gun Hornet is great in black but I'm waiting for a plastic kit model to use two of its many weapons to see which works best on the empty F/A-18 pylons. Think it should become an Attack Hornet. But didn't their planes have blue bombs?

So, is the F-14 gone from the skies? Well not completely. Again according to Defense Industry Daily, The last Grumman F-14s flying will belong to Iran.

F-14s replaced F-111s and F/A-18s are replacing the F-14s 'cause they're too expensive to run and maintain. Like humans, machines also have to do more for less! Is the F-15 going to be replaced?

Answering my own question here is some F-15 news;
Notionally, Boeing estimates the F-15SE’s cost, including airframe, spares and training, at $100 million each.
The F-15’s single-largest customer – the US Air Force – is not officially a sales target for the F-15SE. However, Boeing says that all of the stealth, avionics and structural upgrades can be retrofitted on any existing F-15E. Company officials have briefed three agencies within the US Air Force, including Air Combat Command, but only as a “courtesy”.
So! Who makes the best 1/72 Diecast?

F-15's are being replaced by the F-22 and F-35...fewer but more capable aircraft.

Default F-22 and F-35

F-22 and F-35 don't look like Navy planes and don't look like good diecast material. Is that why they haven't come out yet?

The Russians ARE developing super jets to counter the F-22, Rafale and Typhoon. The Su-30 and all its variants is one example.

The F-22 has been pick as a purely Air Force fighter, while the less expensive and more versatile F-35 will be used by all but the Army. They do make the F-22 as a model, but I'm not sure what scale beyond the one that Model Power released.

I think that's more of an upgrade to the same fighters of the soviet era. Fighters I love, dont take me wrong. But while they are upgrading their 4th generation planes to Su-30s and Mig-29 OVTs, fatbacks, etc, (still 4th generation though more advanced), the U.S is DEVELOPING 5th generation airplanes.

The Berkut project is almost, if not completely static due to the absence of funds, for example. Now that would be some innovation, wouldnt it???? The Berkut looks revolutionary

Armchair Pilot, I think Gaincorp has an 1:72 F-22, and I think there's a 1:48 Franklin Mint F-22 too. For pictures visit theflyingmule.com
