Default My Military Model Airport

I don't know how to move the other thread to the 1:400 board where it should be, so I'm starting a new one.

Got some new models, so thought I'd snap off a few pics for you guys.

Enjoy!

Sagar

2. The 737 fleet.

3. The alert ramp.

4. A NATO AWACS taxing past the VIP terminal.

5. Overview of my airport.

Thats ace, I am working on something similar. The P-3s are great, I have a few of them. Get the ARII 1/400 scale plastic aircraft packs, they are cool if you want to paint them!! Well done.

Did you make that hangar? Looks good, I think we are going to be seeing a few more of these air bases soon. I have something up my sleeve as well. Also is that the spirit of 76 AF1? I've been looking for that plane for awhile to no avail.

You should post some of the pics. We all have collections, so let's share them. Heck, look at my terminals, it's about as plain as it can be.

Yeah, I made my own hangars. Got bored one night and just did them. Might make sure more, but the store where I get my Plastruct closed.

Mine is very basic too. I need a couple more buildings made, and I need to paint the wood in a kind of tarmac colour. I had the chance to acquire the C-9A Nightingale set but I dont like the Nutzmodel mould, so I didnt. Wish I had now, though I hope that Papa K might do the C-9A one day.
If you are interested, Sagar, I may have some 1/350 E-2/EA-6B Prowler available. you will need to paint though.

You should check out the two Navy C-9A's by SMA but be prepared to spend some cash. Once my camera stops acting up I'll post a few pics.

Yeah, it's just wallpaper. I can't remember where I got it from, but I think it was a arts and crafts store. It's a lot better then just a white wall.

The AFI sign I grabbed out of the garbage. The F-16's came with tankers. Dragon offers fighters with a bunch of their planes. F-16's, F-15's, F-117's and a B-2. None of them have landing gear unless you buy the B-2 by itself. The Navy jets are either from Tamiya or Trumpeter. All of those planes are 1:350 scale. If you look at the thread about the USS Enterprise you'll see some of the pics I posted comparing them to 1:400 scale fighters. There isn't a big difference. Arii makes a USAF and USN set in 1:400 but you're going to have a hard time finding it. I found two on e-bay. I have one tanker for every tanker in my unit. I'm going to do a replica of the base I work on. Thanks for the compliments.

Garth

Sagar, Just a thought, but with all the aviation photography you do, what about enlarging some of your pictures to make a back drop? Would that be a difficult task? If you could pull it off that would look pretty sweet. That's not to say your cloud back drop looks bad. It deffinetly looks better than a plain wall.

Hi CPB2, I have 159118, the other one i saw in 1/1 scale on delivery from Iberia to the USN at PIK. Its a bit modern for me. 118 is an old machine and has been in PIK many times. I think it was still flying for USN recently.

I am guessing that your 'Blue Angels' F/A-18 Hornets are actually Tamiya or Trumpeter 1/350 scale models, unless someone makes these in 1/400th?

Yep, they're 1:350 Tamiya. I'm going to do another set except I'm going to use Trumpeter this time because they have clear canopys and I will be able to make an F-18D for the #7 plane. I've been working on some fighters but man it sucks painting those little suckers. Hopefully I'll have some pics by next weekend.

Hey all, thanks Champpitbull2 for giving me the credit. Unfortunately I don't have a base put together. I have a pretty good size collection. Yours is very impressive I must say. I am always on the road with my new job since I retired from the AF. I will have to take some pics of my collection at least for now. What is happening to Dragon I see they pushed their latest C-130 with skiis back until March. Very disappointing for us Military fans. I also saw Herpa has a Herc out from the RI National Guard. Might have to grab it. On a side note Revell is coming out with a Plastic model kit of the C-17 in 1/144. That will be an awesome kit..

Exclamation Re: My Military Model Airport

Evening:

Being someone new here! I would like to ask if anyone is using Micro Machines to use as fighter aircraft Vs the 1/400.

When the 1/350 SU-33s came out, we found that it was a good match to our MM planes.

True scale maybe off, but on a lay out next to C5As or C-17s should be right at home. Plus they have wheels.

I live in WI about 45 miles N by NE of Green Bay, home of the NFL Packers.

I have 1 C5A, some 14 C-17s and about 20 C-130.

Just today for $100.00 with shipping I picked up 4 DWs, a KC-135E, a KC-10 /B2, a E3A and a Tenn C-130.

I would lovee to talk to anyone about a airfield some where with a surface area of 2' X 6' to park the planes.

Down the road I want to get 3 more C-130s, the IDF, RAF and the NAF

I have the SU-33's too. They're pretty big planes for fighters. You should take some pictures of your collection. If you want to do an airfield and you are looking for ideas go to google earth and look some up. Google Earth has a measuring tool so you can measure everything up and then divide that number by 400 and then multiply it by 12 and voila, you have the dimensions you need. The airfield I'm building is about the size you mentioned. I have two other panels that size that I'm contemplating what to do with them. I might make one big 1/400 scale airbase or I might make a 1/500 and a 1/200 as well. I only have a few 1/500 planes and not a single 1/200 but I keep seeing all of those cool 1/200 fighters at the hobby store and I'm tempted to buy a few. the Only problem is they are so much more expensive then 1/400.

Champ:

Thanks for the quick reply:

The trouble I find right now is that all the layouts that one can buy are mainly for Civilian Aircraft.

I don't need anything more then a parking area, with a hanger or 2.

I think I mite of found the airfield needed and that one is down in FL. The old Homestead base. Not currently in use's

I want or need one for the military end. With not allot of room, I find myself to biulded a folding shelve above my extrain layout, that now is filled with Micro Machines and everything else.

Just a short runway with a large concrete parking area, 2 X ? long

If you want a military base that doesn't take up alot of room you should look into some of the Air National Guard bases. For example the base I'm building will be modeled after Niagara Falls ARS. There are only 17 planes there and not too much infrastructure. It sits on the other side of a civilian airport which is quite common for reserve or guard bases. Pittsburgh is like that and so is Syracuse. I know many more are like that too but i haven't been there. Maybe you could build the Wisconsin ANG base? The base I have is around 2'x6' and has plenty of room for what I'm doing. Unfortunately it doesn't have a lot of room for visitors. As far as finding a layout to buy, I don't think I have ever seen a military layout produced. But, with the use of maps.live.com and Google Earth you should be able to build your base pretty accurately.

Hey Champ:

Do you know a Dale Beauman, lives over by Alden, NY. If you have the time, go over by him and see how the Micro Machines planes would stack up to the 1/400. He's a good man

I see where eztoys is going to offer airports from around the US, has that happen.

If Eztoys hasn't offer the new picture's then I think I'll just take like the end or #3 and the back lot.

That will hold me till I want to stick more time into the game.

Besides the 1/400, I also could do a layout in 1/144! Here ive got like 72 AH-1s, V-22s and UH-60s.

Then I can also do 1/300 or 1/700 as well and all this with out doing something with all my planes from Micro Machines.

Last question, is Herpa the only one who has a 1/400 Hanger?

Alden is about 15-20 minutes away from me. I have a stash of Micro Machines in my parents basement. I'm going over there tomorrow and hopefully I'll remember to grab them. I haven't heard about e-ztoys doing that. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that. As far as i know Herpa is the only hangar producer for 1/400. You should check out some of the plastic that you can buy and build your own hangars with. It's really not that complicated. All you need is a good razor, sharp scissors, a ruler and a pen or pencil. If you have the dimensions of the hangars you want to build it's not that hard. Otherwise you just have to wing it with the dimensions. Do you have a digital camera?

I was waiting to get all my planes in before posting. The guys from the Micro Machines board want to see how the micro planes match up to the 400 scale planes.

I just got done with a letter to a friend in the UK, to check on any hangers that he mite have or can get ahold of in the 400".

One of my next things to do is find someone who paints, because ive got some copys in the C-130s and want to repaint a few.

One color is to repaint the C-130 in a P-40 Green/Brown and with the Sharks teeth

whoops, I forgot to grab the Micro Machines today, but my car looks pretty good after I washed and waxed it. I'll have to try to remember when I go over there next weekend. If you can find someone who can paint that plane for you it sounds like it will be pretty cool. I'm finishing up some Mig 29's tonight. Ill have to post some pics in a few days when they are done. Those SU-33's are huge compared to the 29's. I think Trumpetter may have designated them wrong though. If you look at an SU-33 the crew sits one in front of the other. This plane seats the pilots next to each other like an SU-34.

I see where someone from the board has started a Russia Airforce. Anything go's as long as its Russia.

Well ive got 12 AN-124s in 1/700 scale, some 60 Mig-29s from Micro Machines, 36 Su-33 from Trumpeter 1/350, and then from Furuta ive got some 100 SU-27s, 16 Mig-31s, 9 SU-37s and 12 Hind-24s.

Looks like I can make a shelve, 24" X 112" long, so that will be a starting point.

Then i quess, parts 1 and 3 plus 2 parking areas should do the 1st lay out.

After that a couple of Herpa hangers, and I'll be in good shape to take those long awaited pictures

True: But eveything is mixed in size. I think most of the Furuta Planes are around 1/220.

One of the better layouts would be in the 1/144, because here I can do 72 AH-1s alone, with out the extra V-22s, CH-47s and UH-60s.

The 1/700 is bad either, because I can do C5As, An-124s, C-17s and KC-10s.

With my large Micro Machines, I'll use my large force of C-1A in the 1/300

I for one had a good friend put the Trumpeters 1/350 SU-33 together. I took 21 different moves per planes without painting them and I had him do 36.

Well he stopped at 30 and had enough, what I don't know is if he ran out of the GIN I got for him (?) or just had it.

After thinking it over, I'm just going to do a 2' X 8' airfield. I can glue some wood to the wall on 2 sides and a chain on the outside edge.

That way I can ran with 2 different scales and keep both to a 2' x 4' layout.

Yep, and then I was able to buy some small numbers from a local hobby store that were intended for train sets. I'm going to start over with the trumpeter sets because then the planes will have clear canopies and I will be able to have a real D model for the #7 plane.

They deffinetly take patience. I did 6 SU-33's and they didn't turn out as well as I would have hoped. Then i just did 6 Mig-29's and they were pretty good but then like an idiot I was applying a final coat of lacquer to them and accidentally grabbed the glass grey instead. Now my Migs have grey over spray on them. I'm currently building 6 more Mig 29's, 6 SU-27's and 6 F-18E's. Hopefully they will turn out good enough so that I can post a few pics. I bet your friend just said ah screw it because these little suckers can be frustrating.

O, I had nothing better to do, so I picked up another C-17. Want to get the last one sometime next month.

I got St Louis Diecast paided off and have some 6 planes from Buddy coming in by the end of the week.

Tommorrow, I get my new shelve up for the 1/400 stuff.

Instead of blue sky's for a back drop, I'm thinking of model railroad. They make scenic backrounds, like a Drywash Desert or a Saguaro Desert would give it a feel that its out in Las Vegas

Airport Designs do some good stuff, mainly civil but the hangars would suit military uses.

Question:

Is there any trading go on with member's of this board. I have a F-15 and a B-1 with maybe another coming in.

Everything I will put on the field will have landing gear.

Here's another thing, I'm willing to bet that if you get the newer line of Furuta Planes, like set 6 that have the F-15s that a person could take the landing gear from these planes and just drill small holes into a F-14, 15, 16 or any other fighter and have wheels (?)

Hi:

Hey, I just got in a 24 plane set from Arii 1/400 and have found out that my Micro Machines F-117s are a very close match to the Arii, plus ive got landing gear

I've been working on some fighters but man it sucks painting those little suckers. Hopefully I'll have some pics by next weekend.

Arii, Tamiya or Trumpeter which one would you recommand for my military base.

If you collection is 1:400 planes...your best bet is the ARII models...very nice pieces. Only thing is you may want to repaint them...too small, hard to paint.

Thank you I think I'll give it a try and paint them like the above pictures.

I would say the Trumpeter planes are better. They have clear canopies, have better decals, are more detailed and have real landing gear. The ARII are harder to find and there isn't that much of a difference between 1/350 and 1/400.
