MCAS Miramar's Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum to Permanently Close

Sadness as this airbase museum is just 2.5 miles away from my humble abode. I’d visit a few times a year...especially when the Blue Angels were in town. I hear there’s a 50% sales at the store....i don’t know the full disposition of the static display planes .... perhaps to the Arizona boneyard. Covid has all but eliminated patronage and $ at most if not all kinds of Museums. Covid not only Blows, it also Sucks.

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

......” Aguilar said there were discussions about an agreement that would absolve MCAS Miramar and the Marine Corps of the overhead, but much to the museum foundation’s disappointment, the two parties were unable to make an agreement to the satisfaction of the Marine Corps.

According to MCAS Miramar director of communications Capt. Matt Gregory, the base's commanding officer, Col. Charles Dockery, decided to close the museum due to budgetary constraints”......

That`s a damn shame. Such museums struggle to survive anyway, without this terrible disease. Would the community pitch in to save it?

I fear not, to many unemployed, money is tight, mouths to feed. Only a miracle or government funds diverted... will probably help.

From the article:

"The air station annually pays over $400,000 to the museum’s salaries and operations, and that money is now being planned for reallocation toward higher-priority missions -- breathing apparatus equipment for flight-line firefighters and rescue, for example,"[Capt] Gregory said.

What a crock. The Colonels story is the USMC’s paltry $28 billion dollar budget isn’t sufficient to fund a $400,000 museum with a 30k annual visitorship?!

Sounds like we need an audit of his base’s budget, not to close the museum. It appears a phone call to the local Congresscritter is in order.

If Aviation enthusiasts around the world are so inclined.....here is what the local tv news station KUSI put out....which is 2 pretty generic ways to contact the USMC to express your opinion over the impending closing of the Museum.

Those blaming the "terrible disease" for our continuous destruction of society, culture and mass unemployment, I have to laugh at their ignorance.

It is the continuous overblown, over-reaction lock downs / restrictions that cause this, not a respiratory virus.

Case in point, this museum is in CA, sporting massive stupid anti-evidence restrictions with same outcome as 100% open Florida.

WAKE UP PEOPLE, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

Mate, I'm not gonna be calm when I see my fellow citizens' lives and livelihoods destroyed over a virus w/ a median death rate above avg. life expectancy (look it up, this info is everywhere).
Also, I currently reside in the US.

Nope, that is not how it works, we don't destroy lives to save a few.

Don't think we do that for TB, influenza, cancer etc.

Have a nice day.

Thanx mate, for letting your voice, from another country, be heard (read) in the interest and concern for the preservation of Aviation History.

The economic impact is serious and regrettable, but it can and should be minimised by government assistance. Killing people in the name of greed however, is not how it should work. We should be working together against a common enemy.

You seem very confused over why we we haven’t locked down for cancer, TB and influenza. Let me offer some assistance.

Cancer - not contagious, therefore quite utterly pointless.

TB - an ancient bacterial disease. Well understood with well established treatment. However, as an aside, viruses and bacteria are completely different. DNA replication is very stable and mutation relatively rare - which is why, for example we commonly expect our children to have the same number of arms and legs that we do. Point is, there really isn’t a “variants chase”.

Influenza - for a long time an order of magnitude less lethal, with a seasonal global vaccination program in place designed to cope with mutations. However, it could be back in a major way and the much maligned WHO keeps a close eye on it.

COVID19 is very different and perhaps worst of all, nations with very large spread (USA, Brazil, UK), allow it to replicate. RNA, unlike DNA is like very bad photocopier. It produces lots of mutations. Most are rubbish. Inevitably a few are very dangerous. The more you let it, as some (like you recommend) “run it’s course”, the more it may outrun efforts to suppress it. You are giving it a free R&D lab and production line.

Your arguments are ignorant, selfish, nonsense. That makes them dangerous. If this problem had been treated seriously to start with, we would never have got into this situation. At what stage would you suggest we take it seriously? Half a million dead in the US not enough? How about a million? Two million? Five? Where? With a population of 300 million when does it stop being “a few”? Oh, and you can’t just turn off the tap. To use your own words:

WAKE UP!

You`re reply is spot on Adour. Unfortunately, it`s a waste of time trying to convince people like Alitalia, which is why i didn`t waste any effort. It`s because of notions such as his; ignorance, selfishness and lack of humanity to the vulnerable "few" that helps spread the disease, and ultimately prolong`s the lockdowns most of us are diligently enduring.

Such sad news! I was able to visit this nice museum 1,5 year ago and will always cherish the conversation I had with one of the volunteers; a widow of a seasoned veteran pilot, who stepped in to do his work at the museum when he passed. If the museum can't be saved I hope the collection ends up in good hands, but also hope that the volunteers find another place where they can educate and inspire young & old.

Lockdowns in Florida: ZERO
Lockdowns in California: 100%
Outcomes? The same (of coarse Florida didn't destroy human, civil and economic rights and children are in school)
The stupidity, gullibity and retrograde ignorance of humanity never ceases to amaze and disappoint me. Keep on enduring your Chicom lockdowns, rest of world worries about food on table and children get back in school

This news just makes me sick. I've never been to San Diego but would have very much toured this museum if given the opportunity. I understand this has been a crazy, stupid year and many businesses and institutions and people are having a difficult if not impossible path to stay afloat.

I just hope that somehow these pieces don't end up destroyed but can hopefully find a home if an 11th hour solution is not found. Any chance that the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola (which has its own challenges at the moment) can step up and at least absorb some of the more noteworthy Marine Corps artifacts located here?

As much as I love these aircraft, any museum that in 2021 still keeps WW2 types out in the sun to be consumed by the elements and baked into oblivion is behind the times. These aircraft would be better served being transferred to some place that can conserve them properly, keep them in climate controlled storage, and put them before an audience in a contextualized meaningful way and not just "a bunch of planes in a field with a small sign."
While we are all airplane nerds here, let's face it - that sort of display is for airplane nerds only, and for ones who probably don't expect to have children or grandchildren who want to see the aircraft, as this kind of storage will destroy the items. Furthermore, despite spending half a million dollars of taxpayer money per year, this museum was apparently unable to do much of anything virtual to forward its supposedly educational mission to anybody but the tiny number of visitors who happened to be in that part of the world and could be bothered to spend the time to trudge out to some sun-baked field. I am sure the workers and volunteers there were all dedicated and hard working, but the museum just doesn't have the scale commensurate with its mission. "Go big or go home" is the keyword here, and so "go home" is understandable.

If a good home can be found for at least the more important of these aircraft - which absolutely should happen - the decision is not unreasonable. Even if the aircraft were hung in the forecourt of an airport or shopping mall they'd see far more visitors and be far more protected for the long term compared to where they are now.

If this beautiful museum was in Florida (i just got back and it is 100% open I visited 3 museums in Miami) it will still be open and thriving.
However, this museum is in commie-California, 100% anti-evidence useless CCP style shutdowns, for almost a year now with nothing to show!

I wish!! Some of us, including me have still got to work! Even in Lockdown. Thankfully we have the NHS in our country.

Surely your anger and frustration could better be served by e-mailing or writing to the aforementioned congressman to try and keep this popular museum open, rather than sidetracking this thread by lambasting people who have no axe to grind with you????

Does this make sense? Or am i missing something here?

PS. (Oh. And as for My "Enduring", it`s keeping myself and my kids from seeing their beloved Grandma, keeping her safe, so we don`t potentially pass this terrible disease on to her).

Last weekends visit to the museum was a bit sad.....the indoors exhibits gone except for one exhibit cabinet of stuff....and yes, they required masks and temp checks!

As for the planes ... I was told some are going back to where they were loaned from....the others were anybody’s guess, so said the remaining staff members.

The museum store was briskly selling out of items......I picked up some that was of interest to me. At a 50% off sale why not?

Below is the one cabinet left .....

This is really Sad. Sounds like it's a done deal.

But I'm glad you got a good deal. I was going to head down there later this summer for some Miramar photoshoot. Sigh.

To add insult to injury.....the tentative date for closing is April Fool’s Day the 1st.

Hearing an entire relocation of the Museum elsewhere in SoCal may be in the works. Fingers crossed! Definitely beats parting out the collection.
