Default Century Wings Vf-103 F-14B AA101 (CW-001626)

I came across this aircraft by accident, but I really like the paint scheme and have been wanting a B or D. I have an HM Black Aces F-14A that I am very happy with, but I don't know much about Century Wings. I just wonder how the quality compares with Hobby Master. I am also curious that I was unable to find a photo of the actual aircraft in this paint scheme, only a similar one at a later date with a different carrier assignment.

Thanks for the picture and BuNo. I have seen some pictures with the same BuNo, but 201 on the nose instead of 101. I was just curious about the discrepancy and wanted to see more history on the actual aircraft.

Try this.......

BB

““History of a Particular Aircraft

There are a lot of people who want to know about the operational history or ultimate disposition of a particular Navy or Marine Corps aircraft, If you have a specific question about the history of a particular Navy aircraft, you might try the Naval Historical Center which is located in Washington, DC. They have cards on virtually every aircraft ever owned or operated by the Navy, and they might be able to answer your question fairly quickly. Another source is the Aircraft History Card file maintained by the National Air and Space Museum Archives Division, which maintains microfilm copies of aircraft records created by the US Navy. They also may be able to help you. You could also try the National Naval Aviation Museum, located at Pensacola, FL. Another source might be the US Naval Safety center, located in Norfolk VA.””

Good Luck

Your answer for why 101 changed to 201 has to do with changes in operational assignments if required for example from one aircraft carrier to another etc. The term for those numbers and different designations has is called MODEX....

Here is just one explanation..... of more explanations using MODEX in your search words...

Also there is this ...... from the book (published 2005) .... US Navy F-14 Tomcat Units of Operation Iraqi Freedom By Tony Holmes

I knew that aircraft were often moved from one squadron to another at which point their 3 digit number might be changed along with paint and markings. It never occurred to me that they would have this number changed within a squadron, but now that I think about it, why not? Thanks for the info.

By the way, I just purchased a book on the Tomcat for around $15 on Amazon. It is not the definitive authority on it or anything, but it is a nice hardcover with decent pictures and is well written.

Here is a freebie for all.....

Virus free link to the entire book (published 2005) .... US Navy F-14 Tomcat Units of Operation Iraqi Freedom By Tony Holmes in pdf format. It’s got some great pages of scheme artwork.

When you click on the link below (disregard references to a 7 day free trail, not necessary for this book)....wait until it does the file health (blue processing bar) then you’ll see the little green cloud with a download arrow.....then click on it.....the Pdf to read will be an online pdf on your browser....that you can then save to your device or pc or laptop if you want to.

(I’ve used this site before and none of my stuff has blown up )

MOOO

Century Wings does not use the same mould as HM. CW's first few 'Cats were made in HM's factory but they began producing elsewhere many releases ago & HM developed their own mould. This was confirmed by William years ago and was widely discussed on other forums.

I stand by my view the majority of CW's F-14's are superior to the HM releases including the magnificent VF-84 JR release CW-729025 which is in the identical scheme to the subject CW-001626
