Good luck sorting that out. According to a TOPGUN instructor of the time, the movie makers weren’t real big on continuity. Case in point- since TOPGUN had oversight of the script (thankfully), one of the officers pointed out the ACM footage shot over the Pacific was unusable. Can’t have a TOPGUN training sequence in a desert and then suddenly the jet crashes in water.
Jerry Bruckheimer’s response? “We’ll fix it later”. That’s where the line “he’s in a flat spin and heading out to sea” comes in.
I’m not even gong to touch on the totally unrealistic circumstance of TOPGUN training aircraft ending up on a carrier and engaging enemy jets a short time later. Or a TOPGUN class going straight to a high tension area together instead of back to their home squadrons.
Fun movie, but there’s plenty enough real world Tomcats which deserve a place of honor on my shelf. Like a CalW version of “Gypsy 202” (hint hint).

Gypsy 202:
- The tomcat crew coordinated badly.
- The tech didn't work well (AIM-7)
- In hindsight (based on a U.S. House Armed Services Committee review), it seems that the whole affair was largely due to the overactive imagination / "mission fulfilment tunnel vision" of an in-aircraft US commander - this was effectively murder of the libyan pilots - albeit at a time of inflamed tension and itchy trigger fingers. The whole "he's turned back into me for the 5th time" stuff was pure invention. Sure, "it was nevertheless justified" was tacked on to this analysis, but that was clearly a political CYA.
- no political effect whatsoever in terms of curbing the libyan regime.
but yes, the tomcats went zoom and the "bad guys" went boom.
hardly seems like the USN's finest day to me though. i'm not saying that i or anybody else would have done differently or better, but, again, not the USN or the tomcat crews finest day by a long shot.

I'd go with a calw low vis vf-111 or low vis vf-213

For no particular reason than aesthetic preferences I'm not a fan of VF-213, but I'd be all over a calW low vis VF-111 aircraft.
i also like the semi low vis livery that HM has chosen for HA5231
Grumman F-14A Tomcat 160395 VF-33 “Starfighters” USS America, 19923. The problem is that HM's low vis tomcats have been very poor to where I thought my purchase of HA5227 and HA5202 were among the worst I've made recently. Both might be saved with the sort of oil weatheing that noel showed in his video, but I've not had the time to even think about trying this yet.
well, that was quick, and, while it looks nice, it's clearly not the weathered model of previous photos that we saw. was there a clean and normal version here?

Looks like that might be the weathered version. Scheduled for March of next year.
would be very unusual if the clean version available now but the weathered in some months. presumably eitehr
a) they are now both ready or soon will be
b) there really will be only one (retailers have often gotten this wrong).
let's see. what is really clear is that
* CALIBRE WINGS NEEDS TO HAVE A PAGE SUCH AS HMC. Confusing potential buyers and not giving them a page of models in various poses to drool over is not a good idea*.
Re: Attention mugs who bought TSM 1/72 Top Gun Tom
Collectors have started to receive theirs, photos up on MHIII & FB etc.
There is only one version & it comes with a standard 'wash'. Initial photos are looking great, everyone who has one seems very happy. Mine is inbound & should be with me in the next 3-4 days
The image on CalW's site doesn't do it justice... they really should replace that.

Glad you find it to be 'perfection.' I find the green/blue effect of the postshading to be slightly off, but that might be related to photographc light conditions. But, this is really a marginal complaint - the model clearly is really nice and certainly passes the 'buy' threshold for those who like the subject. Like many, I suppose, I pre-ordered this and the top gun fist-of-the-fleet ish one, and am left wondering who will buy the 'cougar' one.
But, from where I sit, some of the other recent calibre tomcats - including the red tail vf-31 and others are really superb in my book. We are all spoilt for tomcats and as I've said elsewhere, given the lacklustre finish of HM tomcats, especially on low-viz ones, it's hard to see any point to buy HM tomcats any more. Or, you know, HM could get its head out of its backside and start selling fully finished and weathered / panel lined / detailed versions of what they already have at price points at or near calw prices and call it a 'premium line' as many of us have been encouraging them to do. It makes so much sense.
Meanwhile, calw's webpage is a disaster. Slow, poor photos, and only a marginally correct lineup of releases. Instead of a simple list of "F-14 tomcats" you have to wade through some categorized bs that nobody cares about. The F-14 "tomcatsky" is under... "soviet stars?" no. "classic cats?" no. it's under "top gun" along with fictional movie planes (eyeroll). The Ukrainian Su-24 is under "soviet stars" because apparently when it comes to the Su-24 what matters is where and when the aircraft was originally built, not what its current livery is - the total opposite of CalW's "tomcat" classifications. want to learn about previous calw tomcat releases? You're out of luck - they're nowhere to be found. Trying to figure out which models have clean and normal/weathered versions? hit and miss. the website is a real mess at every level.

About the Tomcatsky- there’s a YouTuber who points this out, but that Tomcat was never assigned to NFWS. As it was part of a Navy aggressor squadron (VF-126) , it spent a lot of time @ Miramar. But that’s not the same as being part of TOPGUN proper.
I’ll cut them slack on the movie Tomcats , since most laypeople don’t give a hoot they’re not squadron planes. I figure they’ll change the website with time and exposure.
Re: Attention mugs who bought TSM 1/72 Top Gun Tom
I have to admit its a nice looking bird, but I still prefer real squadrons.
I don't know...if Calibre wings is committed to the full lineup and we can expect at least 7 planes before the next movie comes out, then maybe I should invest in these. But I have a feeling that unless I'm watching Top Gun at the time, these releases will stay boxed for the most part. They would feel more commemorative than the typical releases I buy.

Isn't the Lightning Fist 104 F-14 just up for pre-order though? American distributors aren't supposed to even get theirs in until after January. Unless these pre-order windows overseas are just really short...
Re: Attention mugs who bought TSM 1/72 Top Gun Tom
I've spoken to some of the people at CalW on their facebook page and it doesn't look like they will be reproducing an F-14 for Hollywood and wolfman or Cougar and Merlin. I decided to buy extra F-14's and just do the codework myself but I need some help regarding Hollywood and Wolfman's F-14. Does anyone know what the tail sigil, modex numbers and bureau numbers are for their plane? I already have Cougar and Merlin's info thanks to a decal sheet I found but the markings for Hollywood and Wolfman's plane were nowhere to be found.

I just watched the movie . It wasn’t helpful. Assuming no editing shenanigans, I saw no tail sigil for Hollywood’s F-14 in the final dogfight. The cuts exclude shots of the modex or BuNo.
Since I’m weak, I ordered Mav’s F-14. It’s comfortably parked next to my Tomcatsky now.

Yeah I ended up rewatching the movie myself and best I can tell, there is one shot of the two planes before the final dogfight commences but the tail insignia looks exactly like Maverick's. Almost like that shot used B-roll or stock footage to help set the scene. I guess I'll just have to make it up as I go when I make use of these decals. Or maybe the Behind the scenes doc might reveal something?
Re: Attention mugs who bought TSM 1/72 Top Gun Tom
Mine arrived yesterday and I am generally quite pleased. I had to work on it some though. The pitot tube base was too long so it had to be filed down to fit flush and the weapons pylons would not fit into place without gluing them. Anyone else have similar issues.

Here’s a thought .Since we can’t ID Hollywood’s plane, perhaps you might Code-3 one to this color scheme? It’s of the F-14 set to appear in Top Gun-Maverick. If you can’t replicate the past, may as well beat the crowd to the future!

I did as well. 2 of my center weapon pylons were damaged out of the box. It appears CW attached all 4 pylons at the factory. Then two of the internal tabs broke off during shipping.

No thanks. I still hate hi-viz liveries with the fires of a thousand raging suns
Re: Attention mugs who bought TSM 1/72 Top Gun Tom
I received my copy and I wanted to write that this model is awesome!!! It’s my first 1:72 military jet, besides my Corgi P-51 polished Missouri Mauler. Boy is it fun fitting together all the different pieces, extending and retracting the wings, toying with the stabs, speed brake, landing hook.. all of it!
I compare this Tomcat to a similarly sized and priced Inflight200 DC-10, and wow.... either the F-14 is the greatest bargain of all time or the commercial aircraft is a complete ripoff! I’ll be on the lookout for more more more military aircraft!!
Re: Attention mugs who bought TSM 1/72 Top Gun Tom
So I have gotten my shipping notifications for the remaining Top Gun F-14's from Calibre and the MiG-28's from hobby master, but I've got some Code 3 work ahead of me now with some custom decals and I need some assistance. Does anybody know the font that is used for the pilot names and callsign on the F-14 and what size should that font be in order to fit on these 1/72 scale planes?

Perhaps you can extract useful information from this.....
Well that at least helps how to determine the font size. But do you know what the exact name of the font is? My best guess is new courier but I may be off

Not an easy one for sure....the spec simply states “Block” it to the discretion of the individual command and “Type Commander” (whoever or whatever that is) to what style of Block font to use....
Thanks for all your help BB. I'll take this into consideration. I need to use this font for the pilots names under the canopy, which are mere milimeters in height, but I'll take what I learned from you into consideration.
