Default Best f-4

I know that HM and AC are making or made Scat XXVII so i'm wondering, who makes the best f-4s

Thanks for any input, Eric

Air Commander has a solid F-4 mold, it’s on the high side on pricing, but Hobby Master has the best variety and models to choose from.

Air Commander gets my no.1 vote closely followed by Gemini however these are the UK Spooks & long out of production. Them HM & lastly (but only if you're desperate) Corgi

Long nose (F-4E), Air Commander. Short nose, Gemini, but, as noted they are Spey engined and long since out of production. Short nose J79, HM.

Air Commander. If i am not mistaken, the tail and stabilizers are also made of metal.

Pains me to say this, but I'm not buying any more AC spooks until the company gets the canopy parts straightened out.

Eric,

In a sense, the canopy associated with the mold has been screwed up since X-Plus was producing the model.

The first iteration was problematic in that the front and rear canopies didn't open far enough, making it VERY difficult to insert the included pilot figures into the cockpit.

Air Commander, having taken over the franchise, decided to "fix" the problem by modifying the setup, and adding a third part, a plastic insert between front and rear pieces.

The change was implemented several models back.

Well, it turns out that the cure has proven to be worse than the disease.

AC has proven incapable of producing the insert without some fairly serious warping in the part.

The defect is not only butt-ugly, it makes it difficult, impossible in some cases, to close both canopies and have the parts seat problerly.

The same warping that I'm going off about was supposed to be fixed by the manu, but it's still showing up in the latest production.

Just the other day, I read about a fella who destroyed the insert on the Robin Olds F-4 by trying to massage it into place.

Done right, AC Phantoms are excellent models.

Again, however, I'm not buying another one until the nonsense with the canopy is FINALLY resolved.

Here's a link to a post about the canopy insert:

Whilst Rudy‘s on the subject of the “new” AC canopies, it’s worth mentioning some of the other niggles that their more ardent admirers often neglect.

Difficulties with weapons. Often either hard to attach or hard to keep attached (white glue normally sorts the latter). Spontaneously disassembling twin launchers if you so much as look at them the wrong way. Some can’t see it, but the nose shape on their short nose is well off, HM is better. Loads of stencils on the navy F-4s is pretty, but they’re well over scale so that’s very much a personal choice thing. They seem to work much better on the USAF SEA schemes.

I do agree with Rudy on the canopy though with perhaps one proviso. I wouldn’t currently consider touching an AC F-4 unless I was prepared to glue the canopy in my preferred setting with canopy glue. That said, you’re probably seriously devaluing your “investment” if you go down that road.

I hear this 'canopy' issue all the time, but i just don't see it. i have never had any substantive problems with mine and i own most of them.

whatever the perceived or actual flaws, i'd rate AC's "silver kings" phantom probably the best, or at least most visually satisfying, phantom in 1/72 that i have in my collection of 150+ spooks.

well you must be the 'only one' then if you have had no issues with the canopies.

Eric,

At one time, it was all but impossible. The canopies simply wouldn't open far enough. Work-arounds included amputation of the legs or using HM pilot figs.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the issue was inherited from X-Plus.

After issuing several very nice models, AC changed the parts and added the insert that collectors have complained about in this thread (and elsewhere).

I'm too lazy to look up the model numbers, but I believe that the bad inserts appeared with AC1008.

I sold my Hobby Master "Showtime 100" and replaced it with the Air Commander version and have not regetted it.
