Default F-35B USMC Iwakuni HA4611 Luneberg Lens

The pre-production photos are out for latest F-35B, Iwakuni HA4611. One thing I noticed was the prominent two bumps on the fuselage just adjacent to the vertical stabilizer. These bumps are Luneberg Lens which are essentially radar reflectors to increase the F-35's Radar Cross Section so that air traffic control radars and other aircraft can see the F-35.

It appears that the Iwakuni F-35B is the first HM F-35 to have the Luneberg Lens...but it erroneously does not have any on the belly of the fuselage. Either there should not be any Luneberg Lens (bumps) or there should be two on the fuselage as well as one on the belly.

Would this error deter anyone from purchasing this F-35B? Does anyone prefer their models without these bumps?

Here is a link with some photos of the F-35 with the bumps.

I really would like to have this F-35B in my collection. But I don't know that I can handle all those bumps, notches and raised edges that just don't appear on the real thing. I have one each of the A and C models. But the F-35 has got to be the worst model (mould) ever produced by HM. Change my mind!

I second the above.
Wouldn't it be very possible and cheaper for the manufacturer to replace those bumps and notches with tampo-print? Or would it make even uglier?

I'm now (after a slow start) pretty fond of the F-35 but I still prefer to be without one in diecast due to HM's poor decision to make it a braille model.

They had a chance to redeem themselves by getting the -35C right but no - that had to screw the pooch again

No, I won’t do that. You’re absolutely right.

I reached out to HobbyMaster to let them know and they replied that there is a single radar reflector on the belly of this F-35B. The belly pre-pro photo shows the F-35B with the gun pod attached, so maybe the single bump is hidden by the gun pod.

Like many of you, I feel as if HM let collectors down with their F-35 mold. Their F-22 molds are great...so they are capable of producing a decent F-35 mold if they want to.

I hope a company (Calibre Wings?) will come out with a more accurate representation of the F-35, as I do not have one in my collection yet.

I share your mind, that's why I haven't got any F-35 in my collection too much. But maybe a day, will a manufacturer make one more accurate than HM currently?

Why would this bit be necessary if the aircraft is presumably equipped with a mode c / mode s transponder and/or ADS-B out at absolute minimum?

indeed. given that HM pumps out F35 after F35 presumably profitably (retailers have reported that they sell well - hell - i even preordered the pole test object) why calibre hasnt jumped on this instead of, say, the F-16 or the by all indications mediocre selling macross-esque stuff is very odd. calibre could overnight poop in hm's cereal with such a release - given how hm did this to calibre by mimicking their tomcat releases, it seems like a reasonable move by them

That would be great if Calibre would produce an F-35 but unfortunately none of us will live long enough to see it.

Beats me. You'll have to ask HM or an F-35 pilot.

I suppose its to prevent testing on the aircrafts actual radar return. So, not so much to make it visible to civ radars but more to prevent its actual physical return being studied.

Will you be getting this model, FortunateSon? Or does the radar reflector turn you away from this model?

why would the radar reflector turn me off?

for all the hm f35 flaws, i have pre-ordered this model . this will be my i think 5th or so f35 from HM and possibly my last. i find that despite their flaws, they display more or less ok. that said, i fully expect calibre wings or another pretender to get their stuff in gear at some point and to make a better one.

here are the HM F-35s that I have:

F-35A
- HA4402 - AF-1
F-35B
- HA4602 - VX-23
- HA4611 - Iwakuni
F-35C
- HA6202 - CF-01
- HA6203 - Jolly Rogers Pole test scheme

The best of these visually is CF-01 and if I were to keep only one it would be that one.
