Default Herpa Wings Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack HE559867

This one just landed in my collection from DiecastAirplane.com

Herpa Wings
Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack
Russian Air Force
6950th Guards, Russia
Item: HE559867
1/200 Scale

I waited for this "White Swan" release, it's named for Ilya Muromets, the most famous of 3 knight-errant of Russian Legends from Medieval times. There's 16 Blackjacks stations at the Engels-2 Air Base. These Tu-160s are impressive bombers, capable of going Mach 2, it makes the America B-1 look small by comparison. Herpa Wings did a nice job with this model, nice construction and looks beautiful. It has optional landing gear and swing-wing. The Herpa B-1 also can sweep the wings but they didn't include the gear up option. I also like the fact they painted the canopy for the Tu-160 rather than the clear canopy like they tried with the B-1. Here's some pictures:

Nice model, nice photos (as ever).

And yes - attempts to make clear canopy on 1/200 civvies/bombers usually end up being a disaster. Wonder Herpa didn´t lerned their B-2 lesson before they released B-1.

Herpa should re-release the B-1 and the B-2 with painted canopies so i can throw my current models in the bin!

I feel like I'm missing something really obvious. This model comes with a set of gear, a set of closed gear doors, and 4 other white pieces and 2 gray cylinder like pieces. What are the extra white and gray pieces for? There were no instructions in my box.

With that attitude you've either not been collecting diecast very long, or you won't be collecting diecast very long.

No but seriously, almost every single diecast tooling can be considered "crappy" one way or another. It's the price we pay for the convenience of diecast. Corgi's B-52, despite it's clear cockpit windows looks fine at normal viewing distance displayed on the ground. I think the larger 1/144 scale helps. Now they didn't go down that road with their 1/144 V-bombers and I think they do look better for it. In flight, well, if you're going to be a stickler then the lack of wing flexure is obvious; hasn't stopped me from displaying mine in flight and I don't plan on trying to correct it.

I do own a Gemini 1/200 787. I fly those, and the in flight wing flexure is ridiculous, even more than a B-52. So much so that I did bend the model's wings and it was no problem at all. I think a Corgi B-52 would be a different kettle of fish though.

Yeah true, I’ve only been collecting for a few months but something about the corgi b-52 canopy looks wrong to me.
