Default Herpa 580038 F-15 Eagle Expensive?

Is Herpa an exceptional brand? Why is this so expensive? 155.00 at flying mule. Or does Herpa just not make fighters very often. Thanks for the answer as i am a novice.

Hi Raptor,

Herpa's military range is generally seen as providing very very very poor value. The F-15 at TFM is based on the old witty mould that regularly sold for well under $20 years ago. The paint job herpa did is at best very average.

In short, I think you found one of the worst models it's possible to buy, so you're best skipping it. If it's an eagle you are after, you are better served with something from Hobbymaster. Alternatively, there's JC wings which are the same old witty mould that herpa is re-using here, but JC's tend to be better. But, Hobbymaster is more broadly the way to go.

I have never bought a Herpa 1/72 model and I suspect very few of the knowledgeable collectors here have either. The exception to this is that i have pre-ordered one of the alpha jets as these are unique.

The JC vs HM F15 debate is an interesting one. In fact,...I made the mistake of buying both the JCWings and HM 33TFW F15C and I did a comparison photo shoot of both types on a thread,...in that other place.

The overall preference was the HM version. But the burner cans and extra tampos from the old Witty tooling certainly make it competitive. Also many lads prefer the more subtle panel lines. Most lads did not like Witty's movable surfaces. Also the Witty canopy is pretty bad too. HM's is much better.

Also I have two Gemini releases and they are both superb and the colours on the Oregon ANG F15C is the best there is for that scheme.

Then you have the Dragon ASAT release, which to be a fair is a WHIF as is it seems the 318FIS, which some aircraft were fitted for,...never actually carried the missile or test fired it,...before the program was cancelled. The point being, many lads like the old Dragon tooling too and that particular release,..from the old Dragon tooling can fetch a pretty penny on Ebay.

The F15 situation is pretty subjective based on the actual scheme. Remember the first couple of HM F15s were real stinkers due to the colours.

All the three manufacturers have their plus or minus points. Although, when it comes to the F15E,..I think everyone thinks HM is the better one. But for the Air Superiority Fighter its a debatable proposition, based on subjectivity, the actual scheme and the application of that scheme to the model.

I have all versions,..proudly displayed in my collection.

I'd strongly advise Raptor to get a JCWing and keep away from HM which is a very bad mould. Dragon is hardly available. Herpa is as good as JCWings but just much more expensive because Herpa is a bigger brand name & that's all the reason for the higher price.

Or you could buy what you like,...regardless of the cranky members who don't like a model for whatever reason.

Some releases are better than others,..regardless of the manufacturer.

Pick a model,..then ask if its good, average or poor.

Simples.

The only Herpa military models I have owned are 1:200 scale. Agreed their 1:72 birds are over priced and not very good. Their thing is more commercial and I think they have one of the best 737 moulds ever. I still think their forte is 1:500 models.

So, I'm not sure if that comment about cranky members was aimed at me, but at any rate, I thought i'd clarify my comment on witty:

Witty F-15s are quite nice in some ways and in some cases have some advantages over HM's. But, for $155, there's no possible way that what is effectively a witty f-15 is worth buying in 2019. If you like the witty look, look for witty (or "sky guardians") on ebay which I'm sure will sell for a fraction of what is being asked for this herpa ripoff.

that also said, I've been very very choosy over the hobbymaster f-15s that I've gotten - I've gotten only the first one (tigers strike eagle) and the 'gulf spirit' c. both are really good. many of the other hm releases are not good, with poor colour choice or unsubtle painting being a regular source of woe.

No,...I was having a tongue and cheek poke at Sarcasm. I don't recall him ever saying something nice about HM.
