Default JC Wings P-51D

Hi all

I have just received JC Wings' P-51D Mustang "Petie 3rd", flown by John Meyer with the 352nd Fighter Group.

I was surprised to see the model finished with a mirror-finish, reflective silver for the unpainted areas. I would not have expected a bare-metal finish to be reflective like this. Is this in any way correct or accurate or is it supposed to be some sort of gimmick? I rather think it spoils the look of it.

Thanks, Chris.

its "correct' for an airshow circuit warbird in super polished just out of the paint shop condition.

chris, you may want to read forums such as this in the future before buying models. while a shiny p51 can actually look pretty cool, i think the overwhelming consensus is that witty wings p51, which serves as the basis for jc's repaints, was irredeemably awful. "stinky", the republic of korea one, and a few others were selling for GBP 2.50 at uk airshows at some point.

while not perfect, hobbymaster's 1/48 p51d is quite a lot better. if you look very hard you might still be able to find their 'petie' somewhere. lovely model by my estimation.

if you're committed to 1/72, then do a search for dragon's petie. hard to find at this stage, sure. but a very nice model and the search is part of the 'fun' of this hobby.

Agree, Dragon and the updated Corgi tooling are the best P51Ds (Dragon still better, even though its a much older tooling). If you are after a B/C with the framed Canopy or Malcom Hood then Gemini is your go.

Agree with FTS on the 1:48 HM P51s. But, again, for 1:48 B/C P51s with both framed and Malcom Hoods, then Eagles International is the go. The company stopped releasing them a decade and more ago, but you can still find them on Ebay occasionally.

Thank you both. It's a shame, given such a good subject.

Do you have any thoughts on their Sea Fury FB11? It looks pretty good to me?

Its an old Witty tooling. It has a fixed down landing gear. I cannot remember if JC has added a up/landing gear option? The most recent is the Carmichael release,....which I have been meaning to buy.

But other than the landing gear,...the tooling is universally praised.

They are superb little models.
