Default Nurenberg 2019 - Herpa Convair B-58 Hustler 1/200

Seems Herpa shows a 1/200 Convair B-58 at the ongoing Nurenberg toy fair.

See picture 940 of the following blog (takes a while to scroll down):

https://stammtisch3rails.blogspot.co...g-toyfair.html

Hopefully they will make it!

Cheers

Very nice indeed. I only hope they will paint the windows and not using plastic windows like they did with the B-1B.

I have also seen a Su-57/T-50 model ...

Many thanks for awesome news, Laurent!

Here even simpler and hi-res:

Convair B-58 Hustler

Anyway - is it me, or the front / radome / nose / windows / hump behind the canopy - it all looks somehow strange?
For sure - transition between front antiglare panel and windows should be at an angle, not in radius as Herpa prototype shows:
Also - windows look too small.
Also - pitot tube should be sloping down.
Can´t describe exactly where´s the rest of the problem, but I´m afraid that complete front part should need to reshape, at least judging from prototype photo.

Here´s how the front parts and windows look on the real plane :

Also, front landing gear would need little bit tweaking - even in 1/200 scale it doesn´t look like B-58 nose gear.

If Herpa model will be shapewise correct, I´ll probably go for it (but in more attractive livery), anyway in 1/200 its really small model, some 12-14 cm / 5.5 inches. In 1/72 its too big for many collectors, so I would personally prefer B-58 in 1/144.

Maybe it's just a pre-production prototype, but it looks more like a toy than a model. Maybe if Gemini Jets produced it would look a little better.

Loved the photo of the B-58 with the GE J-93 engine on the centerline! That was the engine that powered the XB-70 and that plane only.

1:200 is just too small for a great plane. At just under 6 inches,...for a delta??
What a shame.

To me, I think the nose is a little too long, but may be an illusion as it is not all black like on the real plane.
I hope corrections can be made and this is worth the wait.

Some Diecast models shouldn't be made in certain scales and this B-58 Hustler is one of them.. i rather see one produced in the more appropriate 1:72 but in the meantime i will read the Hustler magazine instead..

Well I'm excited. And agreed on the painted windows, clear plastic is always a color mismatch and makes it look like a postage stamp toy plane.

As for the nose landing gear, the strut has to do some very interesting contorting to retract with the nose of the weapons/fuel pod immediately aft of it. Basically it folds in half during the retraction stroke. The USAF museum in Dayton has a pretty brilliant functioning model of it, showing how it works.

I agree with the painted windows 100%. Herpa should also go easy on the panel lines. What I see looks more like trenches. Other than that, let's see a 1:200 B58 in my collection!!!

I'm hoping the panel lines are maybe exaggerated a little with the lighting (maybe). Will hold judgement until I see the final release.
Oh, just looking again at the picture above, doesn't the pylon holding the bombs/fuel tanks need to be angled back, and not straight up/down? I don't have my reference books near me, so I am not sure.

Default Re: Nurenberg 2019 - Herpa Convair B-58 Hustler 1/

Hi lads, here are some new photos of Herpa B-58 bomber:

Unfortunately, these photos just confirm all the accuracy problems mentioned before:
  • way too low hump behind the canopy. This hump should be higher / much more pronounced
  • transition between windows and nose should be at sharp angles - not in radiuses as Herpa did
  • way too small windows
  • pitot tube should be slanted down
  • leading edge of center pylon holding the fuel tank needs to be angled, and not straight (vertical)
  • strange looking nose landing gear
  • maybe too large panel lines

I´m bit confused about whats going on in Herpa now. I´ve always considered Herpa as (expensive) manu with high quality and accuracy standards, anyway this B-58 (at this stage) has still long way to go in terms of accuracy.

I hope corrections can still be made.

I agree that the cockpit windows are a wee-small, and there is the few microns available to do the enlargement.

I really wish they'd get those panel lines either much finer, or leave that stuff for defining flight control surfaces. I look at any of my 1:200 Concorde, and they look infinitely cooler without panel lines (which Hogan could have been added).

It does not look to me like a fine 3D print therefore I suspect the model pictured is a trial run of the actual tooling with a coat of paint and some "to be worked out" artwork applied.
They have done away with the clear painted canopy which was done with their B-2

Herpa's 1/200 past military offerings are a bit of hit and miss depending on the model and the fighter jets (some if not all) are scaled larger than 1/200.
Their F-35 with the fuselage horizontal casting joint line is absolutely appalling.

IMO, the model would look better without the pitot.

Windows are way too small. Throws the scale completely off. And panel lines, as usual, are way too large.

Herpa has released something what looks like a final product photo:

559850 U.S. Air Force Convair XB-58 Hustler with removable landing gear - 54,95 EUR

Even when pitot is missing, I think its quite a nice model ... for someone.

... but definitely not for me.

Where´s the difference?:
SKY DEFENDERS SD0002; 1/250 CONVAIR B-58A HUSTLER for only 11 EUR on eBay

Oh, I see one: unlike Herpa, Sky Defenders B-58 has correct shapes....

Glad that Herpa has definitely solved my small dilemma ... will happily wait on Calibre Wings.

Well, that is disappointing. Way over-scaled panel line 'trenches' that for some, may make the model 'manly' in appearance, but for me doesn't say 'supersonic jet'—just 'toy'.

Wow. A swing and a miss for Herpa.

Yeap, the heavy lines bother me, and it also looks like the outboard engines hang down a little too low, I think they should be more flush with the lower wing.

Its a bit bizarre!. Herpa have released the B52, TU95 etc in 1:200 and none of them have these trenches. Why would they drift away from their normal house style to create this horrible effort??

Very strange effort and a horrible looking model of one of the most spectacular aircraft ever to fly.

Silly.

Maybe it's the pics but in my own humble opinion:
Not impressed.
Toyish look.
Can anyone tell how much these panel lines would measure at 1:1 ?
My guess is 15 cms / 6 inches ??

It's a piece of junk.
They deserve to loose money on the thing.
What is it with Herpa? they seem to employ people with no knowledge of market tastes.

The reference you need is in the photos in the opening posts. And you are correct. What was Herpa thinking?

Some diecast models do actually look better in the flesh than on the photos. My last experience is here: https://alexmodels.cz/shop/deagostin...tion-mag-lg36/

But I´m almost sure that Herpa B-58 will be epitome of ugliness even in real.

I reserve my final judgment until I´ll see it in the flesh, but from the pics it looks like the ugliest Hustler model of all times .

And what about nominee for the worst Herpa model of 2019?

Nurenberg 2019 - Herpa Convair B-58 Hustler 1/200-image.jpg

Translation.....

In research flights, the XB-70 was usually accompanied by a TB-58A aircraft, capable of flying long enough at a speed of M = 2 and, due to this, be kept in line with the XB-70. When the XB-70 went to Mach Three, the TB-58A stayed lower and cut the U-turns performed by the XB-70 according to the flight route.
