Default Help for a Newbie

I would like to collect WW2 1/72 scale aircraft that have a well-detailed exterior and have a reasonable amount of cockpit detail. Unfortunately, and I am having some difficulty determining which models meet those requirements. No one seems to publish pictures showing cockpits and many times there are no good pictures of the bottoms of said models. I was recently disappointed when I got the Warmaster Brewster Buffalo depicting a pre-war aircraft in US markings with a metal underside section that should have been a window. Perhaps someone can give me some guidelines on which manufacturers. both current and defunct, meet my criteria or steer to where I can find the information on my own. Thanks for any help.

Does it have to be 1/72 because cockpit detail is not usually such a priority at that scale? A lot of 1/72 WWII models don't even have opening canopies.

I started with 1/48 scale but I have quickly run out of space. In addition, there does not appear to be the plethora of choices that there are in 1/72 scale. I know that one can build 1/72 scale models with detailed interior. Indeed, I wonder if I can somehow take a diecast plane apart and install a 1/72 scale cockpit as there are separate cockpits made for most aircraft. Now on the other side of the coin, I bought a Hobby Master 1/72 scale P-39 and it has interior detail. One advertisement stated that Hobby Master models come with detailed cockpits. The problem, of course, is that Hobby Master does not make everything.

I think you'll find it hard to find any manu do true cockpit detail and undersides are usually given no attention at all.

It wasn't till I got my Aoshima Zero that I could truely appreciate a manus effort in regards to both those areas

What's that in the front? A detailed instrument panel! Plus it has a stick, pedals & ejector seat.

Yeah, I don't know how much more one wants—or can actually see—in a 1/72 scale cockpit that is the size of your small fingernail.

I think the cockpit detail we rarely look at is the least of our problems

Corgi and HM make a stab at putting some cockpit detail in along with a pilot and gunners, but in 1/72 its all fairly basic detail. Oxford don't put any detail in at all, neither do IXO or the Altaya ranges as a rule.

Yahu panels stearman panels have VASTLY improved my HM Stearman collection. I think HM could easily improve its models massively by negotiating with Yahu to buy its panels in bulk and pre-installing them on its models.

You just love to bash HM models, don't you? No model is perfect, & HM are far from being the worst. & they're also far from being 'crude' as you often put it- in fact, most of consider them among the better brands.

Agreed, HM is by far one of the better manus if we are talking about them over the last 10 years.

Manus like Falcon Models and Air Force 1 take the price for worst manus, Falcon Models only saving grace were their unique moulds, fit and finish were poop most of the time, especially parts .

I miss Witty though, defo the most under rated manu of all time.

As a relative newbie to this hobby myself, only been collecting for just over a year, I found just looking up websites like the HobbyMaster Collector, The Flying Mule and a nice little collector run site called diecastairplanesandwaterlineships.com, was a great source of info, at least for photos of cool stuff that's available.

I'm not too worry about the issues other collectors might have with this hobby, I rather like Robertjon5's collecting philosophy

Yeah, like I said the HM P-39 is fine but the Warmaster Buffalo is not. I find a blank hole under the canopy or a hole with a chair to be lacking.

personally, i do not find myself looking into the canopy much especially since it's more often than not displayed in down position to keep the dust out...

strange that you pretty much whacked air force 1 to kingdom come... yet wax lyrical about avic models then. mebbe it had something to do with you getting them free
