Default Best Brands on 1/72 size

Hi.

I'm new here and since I'm starting my diecast airplanes collection right now, I'd like to ask some questions.

1) Can you order the list below (from best to worse) of these brands, about the quality of their production of Military Modern Airplanes:

Hobby Master (Is the most common in this sector, isn't it? With the most vast selection of models?)
Century Wings (maybe one of the newest and most appreciated?)
Calibre Wings
Force Of Valor
Dragon Wings
JC Wings
Witty Wings
Italeri (is it doing 1/72 scale with modern jets?)
Corgi

2) Have I missed any Brand worth mentioning?

3) A part from best detail and overall quality, in particular I appreciate when models are well equipped with weapons, and have many movable parts (cabin can be opened, landing gears, airbrakes...). Are there any brand that stand out for these issues?

4) Is the 1/72 the most used and precious scale for modern military aircraft in diecast models? Are there bigger scale that I should watch for

5) Can you suggest any European vendor, with many models and good prices?
I found that in Europe, in Italy in particular, is much more difficult to find these kind of items.
Plastic Kits are common.

I'm going to place my first orders, so I'd like to start withe the right choices.

Thank you for the infos.

I would claim Air Commander as the best quality brand, though they only make an F-4 and have only realeased eight (actually seven thus far, AC008 has only just been announced and not yet released!)

Hobby Master are, to my mind, the master of the scale; they possess the widest range and have released some fantastic models (though also some real duds, so don't assume HM is all good..)

CalWings F-14 is the best in most regards, but is very new and currently suffering some severe QC woes.

Corgi when they get it right are one of the best - especially for WWII heavy bombers, where they are untouchable - but don't release enough, choose some questionable subjects and occasionally suffer terrible QC issues too.

Century Wings used to wear the crown, but that was years ago and since their heyday the crown has slipped. Recently they seem to be enjoying a return to form though and are revisiting their other moulds after years of only releasing F-14s and SR-71s. Their F-14 is the same mould as HM's with the same issues, but sometimes much better finish - I would say watch out for the new F-8 as if it's good that Release may mark a return to form.

These are the top tier brands IMO as a collector of some ten plus years with a good couple of hundred models.

That said, Witty Wings (now defunct, but moulds used by JCW and Herpa) released some great models, Oxford have their moments, FoV are promising a great comeback they may pull off and Gemini have done some great work.

Welcome to the forum and the scale

It truly all depends on what subject/theme you want to collect and what your budget is.

People can argue till they're blue in the face about whether Corgi is better than HM or vice versa, whether ACommander has taken over from Century Wings etc. They all have some excellent models, they've all had some proper stinkers, they've all suffered QC issues. It just comes down to the individual models and which ones have been done well and whether you can afford them.

My theme is Modern Military Aircraft.

Let's say from A-4/MIG-21 to F-35/J-20.

The Budget is less important. When I decide to have a collection I aim to the best.
Of course I don't speak of diecast made of gold...I just don't mind if a brand is 100€ and another is 300€ . Usually I choose the 300€ one, even if the differences are poor.

I Just can't get some infos of quality and differences from the videos I watched.
For other collections I watch videos on youtube, but for these kind of items I only found 1-2 channels.

I have a channel myself, and I do reviews and Comparisons of the stuff I collect.
I'll do the same with my first diecast airplanes.

Thanks.

I'll take a look to Gemini and Oxford, Brands I didn't know about.
Do they make Modern military aircrafts also?

A very true statement Grizz. One can argue Air Commander is a better brand than Hobby Master but it becomes irrelevant when the collector wants a F-22, F-15, F-16 etc as Air Commander only make the F-4 Phantom and no other aircraft.

BTW Viperfritz, do you collect diecast cars, 1/18 perhaps? I thought the "Viper" referred to an F-16 but that appears to be incorrect as your avatar is showing a Dodge Viper.

Oxford only make WWII and early Cold War types; Gemini make everything, but don't release much in 1/72 anymore. Old releases may still be found though and some are very good.

Your collection matches mine closely in terms of era: if you are interested in seeing pics of Air Commander, HM, CW and etc you can check out my post history where I have shared a number of photos.

As the others have said if it's modern military you're after and primarily anything that's not RAF then HM, CW and AC are the way to go. Oxford have nothing for you, they're all either budget end of the WW2 scale or they're a more professional range of Inter-War English civilian/military planes.

Wow, like the same question 4 times in different threads on the front page.
A repost:

#3 In the 1:72 scale, Hobby Master is the largest in selection. Quality is good although it goes up and down sometimes depending on runs and has a few less that accurate models such as their F-35 piece.

#2 Century Wings makes incredible models with just a few specialties, the F-8, A-6, A-7, F-14 and SR-71 models. Some flaws with runs as well but the second best out there in quality.

#1 Air Commander, a shoot off of CW makes only the F-4 Phantom and is the best in 1:72 die cast right now with CW right behind them in die cast quality.

Corgi is another I look to in die cast that in the last year has popped out some of the best WWII models. Very hit and miss in quality and accuracy, but the ones they get right are awesome.

Calibre is new to the market entering with their own F-14, my purchase was right up there between CW and HM's model in quality, very nice for a first model issued ( which tends to have flaws that work themselves out as they get up and running with future new production runs), I expect a very high quality from them in the future with their next releases.

Dragon Wings produced some models, mainly WII models but has not been making them for a few years. You can still find them mainly on eBay, the best P-51D out there by the way.
Gemini Aces also produced a P-51B and spitfire variants but is not now for a few years as well, also eBay as a good source for them.
SkyMax, an offshoot of HM also does some WWII navy and Japanese models, very limited.
Air Force One entered in a year or more ago but their quality is almost more toy like than as a good replica display piece.
Same for Forces of Valor although their P-40 is not bad.
Falcon Models (out of business) produced some modern models, but not great quality, good enough to be collectible display pieces displayed with better pieces. 1950- 1970's modern, good Israel Mirage and Kfir models as well early US jets. Again, eBay is the way to go for these although you can get some at super prices with vendor sales.

For time periods:
WWII - Corgi and Hobby Master, Gemini Aces, Dragon Wings, SkyMax
1950 through 70's - Air Commander, Hobby Master, Falcon Models
1970's to current - Century Wings, Hobby Master, Calibre Wings

Thank you all again for your contribution.

I'm making up my mind about it.

From what I read, Century Wings, Calibre Wings and Hobby Master are all really near with the quality.
Perhaps, for the models I'm interested in, I have to check between those brands (a part when I'll need an F4, in that case Air Commander seems a bit upquality).

Next step will be the search for the first model to buy!

If you want a real nice model for the first, try the next "Air commander"!

Yes I do Collect also Diecast Cars (1/18 and 1/43), and the name "Viperfritz" comes from the Dodge Viper.
Even though I am a Ferrari enthusiast (So strange for an Italian!!) the first Viper was really a shocking car i have fallen in love with.

BTW I do collect also:

Transformers
Gundams
Valkyrie (the robots nearest to the Diecast Airplanes)
LEGO
