Default F15 with ASAT missile

Would you buy a F-15 with the ASAT missile ? I'm looking for years after the model released by Dragon Wings but it is impossible to find So, maybe HobbyMaster will do this version when there are enough buyers ?

Cyber Hobby has been in business for many years. I have never ordered from them but suspect they are OK to deal with if they are still in business.

I sent immediately a mail to Cyber Hobby. But only an automatic reply "thanks for your interest in our shop" ... But no answers to my questions. So, no ordering for me. BUT fortunately I found this F-15 with ASAT from Dragon Wings on Ebay in Spain (incredible coincidence). See also http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...tty-stand.html

Cyber Hobby still send out newsletters so they are an active dealer, mostly kits though, probably didn't have it in stock and not bothered to reply.

Score on the find in Espanol

It does seem a little odd that HM have not released it.

But there maybe a good reason. I have the Dragon ASAT F15 and it is a cracking release for a Dragon model. It is in fact my favourite 1:72 F15 in my collection.

But I am not convinced that any 318 FIS F15 actually ever carried it. There were only ever 5 launches with them all carried out by a Edwards F15.

Apparently some 318 FIS F15s were modified to carry and launch the ASM-135.

Now I don't pretend to be the best internet searcher,...but I cannot find a photo of a Green Dragon F15 carrying a ASAT,...even a dummy one.

Reading this makes me think they were never mounted. "The 318th FIS "Green Dragons" quickly established themselves as one of the USAF's premier Fighter Squadrons. In 1984 the squadron won the right to participate at the USAF " William Tell" Weapons Meet, a competition for the Best US and Canadian Fighter Squadrons and later winning the 1984 Hughes Achievement Trophy, a annual award presented to Air Force's Top Fighter Squadron.

In the late 80's, the USAF planned add a anti-satellite (ASAT) capability to twenty F-15's from the 318th and the 48th Fighter-Interceptor Squadrons. Both squadrons had each received three or four F-15A/B airframes which had been rewired for ASAT operations. However, Congress was unwilling to permit any further testing of the system, and the ASAT program was officially terminated in 1988 after nearly ten years of development."

Yeah,....I read that. It seems likely the SQN never carried the missile. Although you would think one may have carried a dummy at some stage?

Interesting read .... "On 13 September 1985, the first and only destruction of a satellite by an American air-launched missile occurred, when an F-15A launched an ASAT against the solar observatory satellite "P78-1" in a 600 km (375 mile) orbit. Although the satellite was beyond its design life-time, it was still working, and its destruction led to some protests by scientists. This was the only full-scale live test of the Vought ASAT missile, and shortly after that, the missile was officially designated ASM-135A. Although "ASM" could be conveniently read as "Anti-Satellite Missile", the designation was non-standard because intercept missiles are normally designated "AIM". Inert test missiles for captive flights were designated CASM-135A."

From .... Vought ASM-135 ASAT

Well....anyway I'm happy for your score in espania! Ole! Leonardo

I am guessing poor old P78-1 orbit was the easiest to prove the concept.

Its an interesting program and "Star Wars" program, in general, was a failure. But the lessons learnt and information gathered set the US Military up for the current programs on missile targeting for ballistic object and laser technology.

I vaguely recall the release. I thought it was a Florida Bird because I remember a mutual friend of ours was all excited over the release.

Unless I have it mixed up with another Witty F15?

I reckon anything with the word "Florida" related to the release would have our friend wetting his pants.

Reviving thread for FYI......

35 Years Ago, a U.S. F-15 Blasted an Orbiting Satellite to Smithereens

https://www.popularmechanics.com/mil...llite-missile/

“Tail number 76-0084, currently assigned to the 125th FW, was the same jet Major Pearson had flown during the Celestial Eagle Flight almost 22 years prior. The pilot is now retired Major General Pearson and the vice president of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Integrated Test Force.”

FYI....it was the “Celestial Eagle” and Major Person that actually destroyed the satellite.

https://www.afrc.af.mil/News/Article...on-remembered/

The model below from Dragon Wings, with different tail art than 76-0084 was just one of a few F-15A’s that took part in the testing different phases.

Sooooooo, perhaps HM or JCW should make the actual aircraft that made history.....and arm it with an ASAT

HM did release a 318th FIS Green Dragons F-15A but it did not include the ASAT missile system. I have seen conversion kits though for weapons so they could produce a stand alone missile just for this F-15

The 318 FIS was supposed to be the first/main squadron to use the ASAT operationally, and several of their jets were wired up to do so----but they never actually got any missiles. ONLY the Edwards birds ever carried or fired any. DW's model is like a VF-111 F-14D-----that was the plan, but it never came to be. (Sundowners were supposed to be among the very first to get Super Tomcats----instead they got disestablished)

When I was younger and delighted in making models the resin kit, scale 1/48, was sold by ESCI under the name of "satellite killer"
