Default Hobbymaster July releases now announced

Hobbymaster July releases now announced. Not on HMC's website yet, but available via jumblies and probably elsewhere.

On the plus sde:

Foxbat!

Very cool P40N. Sorry, I've not been following the HM P40s too closely (wrong scale) but is this the first N? That's a new mould then, no?

On the maybe side:

Molders 109 requiring serious mottling. Let's see if HM can pull it off.

On the OK side:

T-38A from "Edward" AFB. Probably just a description typo. Will probably skip this release.

Passable F-18, Spitfires, F-2B, etc.

A potentially very cool looking german phantom. Because, you know, if Air Commander's worst selling phantom is a complicated german anniversary release, then clearly the best business decision for HM is to make another one.

On the minus side:

HM follows CW with getting into the JR tomcat parade business.

HM kicks everybody in the nuts with YET ANOTHER ****ING BORING YELLOW US SABRE.

That P-40N is a great scheme.

Not much for me this time around, but I need to catch up anyway!

I'm all for JRs like the next person, but goodness. I would like to get a bit more diversity in the representation of the squadrons.

Belenko definitely, and depending on how much rose on vertical stab I´ll maybe return to Matsushima.... most probably with Jackie Cochran .

is it?? says 1977, cw is 1978. so still the same? plus we may still not get our cw f-14s over here because of cutbacks in allocation.

Nothing for me on this poster....Mig 25 maybe, if it was on this poster! Jumblies suggest available 31/8/17, the price was pretty much what I expected (maybe a bit cheaper with the discount).

Seems like an opportunity to focus on the secondary market to catch up with some older releases.

I think the problem is much more due to the USAF common identification criteria for the F-86 units in Korea. Aside from the Able Sabres until 1951 I guess - black and white stripes - both 4th FIW and 25th FIW got the same yellow bands. Unfortunately boring.

HM should focus the late war fighter-bomber units as the 18th FBW with the South African No.2 Sqn or the 8th FBW. It would maintain the silver-yellow pattern but with a new set for the tail art, though. Also, it would be nice see those silver Sabres armed with GP bombs!

It is the first US P-40N, but it's the third HM P-40N overall. There have previously been two sharkmouth Chinese Air Force releases announced. The mold looks quite good.

Shame the Foxbat isn't on the poster. I am curious about the livery.

The only difference my tired eyes could see is the HM version has white on the outboard leading edge [anti ice?] of the vertical stab while CW's is gray.

thanks for the info about the p-40N. apologies that i didnt do my own research on this.

the MiG-25 is belenko's. photos of the foxbat in question are widely available as it's probably the most famous foxbat out there.

do jumblies do discounts/code?????

just got email from flying tigers. Showing 12 releases, not 11. plus there is strangely NO PHANTOM, but 2 NORTHROPS???

HA5403
HA5403 Hobbymaster Northrop T-38A Talon “Jackie Cochran” 60-0551, Edward Air Force Base, California, 1961

£52.99 (incl VAT)
Add to cart
HA5404
HA5404 Hobbymaster Northrop T-38A Talon 16th FTW, Yecheon AFB, ROKAF, 2009

£52.99 (incl VAT)
Add to cart

Or is 1 a previous release?

good news on the f-14 its the same price as original release £99.99. (jumblies £104.99) second one was £5 less. but note RRP is now £136.00 gbp!!

Nice! Good ol' Red 31. I built a model of Belenko's Mig 25 when I was a kid. I know it well.

None of those really pop out at me which is good as I am also purchasing past models that I wanted but could not budget for at the time.

CW has cut back their numbers on the JR F-14 produced which means that probably a few people that wanted to get6 in on that will switch to the HM model, so not a bad choice honestly as HM gets those burned by CW's shorted release.
Really a lack luster pick of models this time around, HM should be listening to the forums for suggestions rather than waste a month of slow sellers in a competitive market.

Those yellow bands were considered a necessity to prevent shooting down their own aircraft by mistake. Similar to the black and white invasion stripes of the D-Day operations onward in 1944.

It would be easy to mistake a Sabre for a MiG-15 - their planforms are very similar, and both were bare metal finished.

This was actually a problem for US pilots flying Spooks out of RTAFB Ubon, where RAAF No 79 Sqn CAC Sabres were tasked with MiGCAP to protect the base and northern Thailand from Communist incursions from '62-'68 as part of treaty obligations in SEA.

Needing practice they would occasionally "bounce" returning USAF Phantoms, whose crews would often think the RAAF Sabres were MiGs that had snuck over the border due to the similar appearance of the Sabre and Fagot/Fresco MiG-15/17 airframes..

That just gave the Spook crews a few nervous moments, but over Korea obviously the consequences could easily have been much more severe

There are the schemes pictured though, eg the tricolour tail, which would make for a little more variety..

Still, time to give the Korean birds a rest by modifying the mould to represent the Australian Commonwealth Aircraft Corp RR Avon-engined RAAF schemes a run IMO

Nobody doubts that the US flew a hell of a lot of yellow banded sabres in the korean war. As a broad livery for the type, this was by far the most historically important.

The issue is that the US was by far the largest user of Sabre types - this includes USAFE, ANG, and other organizations which flew the aircraft in schemes far more diverse than what we've seen so far. And I think a lot of us would like to see some of those.

That said, the #1 scheme I want for the sabre now is the Japan Blue Impulse livery, though I suppose that is coming unless there is a mould compatibility issue that I am not aware of..

I wish I could find the older MiG-21s in camo (Chinese J-7C, Soviet MiG-21SMT).

Agree with OP, the Sabres are boring...

it's called economies of scale. paint a whole bunch of sabres in one run, then add on the different tampos. voila! you've got yourself a different model!

Ref 79 Sqdn Saber bounces. Robin Olds encouraged the RAAF guy's to bounce returning F4's to keep them sharp. There were some strong words over this until things settled down over drinks at the "O" Club! I think after Olds left the practice was discouraged by the new Wing CO. How about a nice HM F86 from the RAAF? I would guess not as major new mold would be needed but man it would go with all the HM F4C/D's from that war!

Just wondering - is anyone getting either the Swiss Tiger Meet or the Ragin' Bulls F-18s? I'm trying to gauge whether they'll be dumpsters or not.

Btw, does HM still use the plastic clamshells for their legacy Hornet?

Interesting story, that would be pretty neat if they could but not many operators of this variant of Sabre. I have the Olds spook so that would make it another reason to buy this if it came out.

Errrr nope Have the other 1 or 2 other Swiss Hornets sold out yet after 3 yrs ??

I'm guessing they would still be in shells, their Super Hornets are as well I think. I'll let you know once I get the RAAF Hornet next month.

The RAAF 30th Anniversary had a nice custom box.. with a clamshell inside.

So as of a couple of months ago they were definitely still using clamshells Kangaroo

Yep, I'm down for the Tiger and Foxbat ATM. This is a decent month's releases though, a good mix for everyone IMO.

I am very excited to see VNAF, as discussed elsewhere. Very cool indeed

I have never understood...any of the Release Poster to Retail shelves delivery timing. So to un-confuse myself...let me see if I understand....

Once a HM Release Leaflet is available...lets say the latest HM April....that means that in Hong Kong China...those models will be available to Chinese Collectors then and there in that month. And for the rest of the world depending where you are at ...can take up to 3 months before its on the retail shelves of the other countries.

Am I right? if not please enlighten me.

When I collected 1/400 models, I would go on Taobao to see the finished product for sale a month before it got here to retailers. Check every so often on there for these to pop up.

Ah that explains it.

I couldn't understand why the HM leaflet said April but the thread said July.

Thanks.

Look at the leaflet again, there are some really nice birds here (just none that fit my collection except the P-40).

The F-14 is a must as is the MiG-25. I also really like the Closterman Spit in 1/48, I have Closterman's Hawker Tempest in 1/72 (Skymax).

Thanks.....I know about tha Taobao thing...from previous discussion on another thread.

See ... I too think that if anyone were to produce picture layouts first....it would be the Chinese vendors/collectors since in theory they will have access to the actual models first before the rest of the world. So for any particular release month look to TaoBao sometime that month...probably towards the mid to end of the release month..to find great pics

I wish I knew how to read basic Chinese if there is such a thing as basic Chinese

there is such a thing as "simplified chinese" as compared to "traditional chinese"... but it's still confusing since only the characters have been simplified, not the language

well, kinda... but it's the standard now, and you'll need fine penmanship to master it still!

you may be better off with the pinyin though...
