It's the radar operator compartment but it sure looks like a 'second' cockpit does it not... just like the Black Widow spider it can see everywhere & attack it victim at any moment!

I think the tail plane simply has a reflection of the upper tail fin giving the illusion it is see through. I'm guessing some P-61's were painted in a semi-gloss finish?

However, I wouldn't be surprised if nearly all art work contain errors. They're in the main done for illustration purposes rather than as a guide to building an accurate model.

Interesting thread... Agree with EF, given the painting depicts a moonlit night, with lightning and possible bounce-back off the water and clouds, etc., that it could be a reflection of the portside tail rudder unto the tail plane surface - angle might be bit off though. As for the "rear fuselage" of this P-61 BW, looking like a second "frontend", it appears correct...

I think it's meant to be a reflection too. But if so it is a coincidence as it takes on the curvature of the rudder exactly........

The shadow cast by the portside stab seems to reflect the correct angle given where the full moon is situated -- but the combo "weirdness" of the horizontal tail-plane looking like plexiglass (sp) combined with the illusion of seeing through to the portside stab could have/should have been avoided. Perhaps another example of an a/c painter trying to do "too much"... Nice lightning However...
