Default What's going on here?.....

This Lou Drendal painting has intrigued me for a long time. No matter what way I look at it I just cannot make out the catapult arrangement. The sling to launch and the one pull back looks fine. But the light coloured "extras" have me baffled.
Are they shadows or what?

Sorry I can't help but will agree the light coloured "extras" do look odd and out of place -- worst thing is it takes one's eye away from the important stuff...

Well...adding my 2 cents ....below is the painting of the F-4 with red pointers and numbers I put to match to the catapult bridle of an A-4 Skyhawk drawings below.

I'm thinking both the F-4 and A-4 bridle attachment is possibly the same.

It appears that no. 10 the catapult holdback pennant is painted wrongly positioned on the painting at an angle that looks like it's at the apex with no. 3 and no.4........it's deceiving the way it's painted. Also the Bridle Arrester lanyard is painted way to wide on the painting for a catapult cable. A picture (painting) is worth 1000 words.

By the way....something looks anatomically incorrect or malproportioned about how the left hand fingers are painted (drawn)......

Why don't you try to position your fingers like it's shown...I'm thinking the thumb is the very top finger pointing up with the bump knuckle....or perhaps the fellow in the picture had his hand mangled in a catapult bridle attaching accident...and is now retired collecting disability.

Wonderful response and thanks to all. At last I can see what was real and what the artist showed. I think "Spooky" was spot on when he says it takes the eye away from the overall painting. It's just too prominent looking.......
