Default HM Grumman EA-6B Prowler, USN VAQ-136 Gauntlets HA5001

This one just landed in my collection from Hong Kong:

Hobby Master
Grumman EA-6B Prowler
USN VAQ-136 Gauntlets
NF500, USS George Washington
Item: HA5001

This one has been long overdue: finally Hobby Master took on the challenge and made the first diecast Prowler in 1:72 diecast. We always expected CW to make one but I'm glad HM stepped up to the plate. The Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-136 "Gauntlets" were the first Prowler squadron to launch assaults against Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. This model very much feels like CW A-6, good fitting on all parts. The canopy was well done, it sits flush in the closed canopy position and looks the best when everything is open to show the 4 crewman. Overall very satisfied with this model, here are some pictures:

As expected from HM. I'll take one (love the livery) and it's a solid mould but this doesn't exactly make my heart a flutter like a CW A-6 did. Thanks for the great pics, especially the front view where it does look cool.

nicely portrayed picture from different angles, SKF....will definitely get this livery....and perhaps another one in the future.....thanks for sharing your beautiful fotos..........personally, i prefer the lighter panel lines on HMs models than the so pronounced deep panel lines on CW models which look unrealistic to me....just my opinion....

This is the scheme I would like to see, VAQ-131 (2nd EA-6B squadron to deploy on an operational cruise) during their 1972 USS Enterprise "Yankee Station"/WESTPAC deployment supporting Operation Linebacker II

What I see as the most important about the Prowler from HM is that they finally learned how to do a stand that can a)support centerline hardpoint equipement and b)not look atrocious at the same time

Wow. Thanks as always, SKF. The seams on this one look terrific. They always look worse in beautifully lit photos like yours, but even here, they're hard to make out. It must look fantastic in person! Very much looking forward to picking up the VAQ-133 Wizards Prowler when it is released

What's the packaging like? Usual plastic tray, or is it the new-style styrofoam cradle?

Kinda wish the aircraft came with HARM missiles.

Think I'd like an EA-6B like that.

Might just have to wait for one.

I knew they flew the A6 Intruder during the Vietnam War, but didn't know the Prowler was there also.

This is a nice one though. Nice pics and review SKF.

Yeah, the Prowler made it just in time for Linebacker II, for which it provided EW support. Prior to that the USMC had some EA-6As which were Intruders with some EW capability (externally identifiable by the large antenna bulge on top of the tail, like the Prowlers) and A-6Bs which were A-6As optimised for the Iron Hand (USN Wild Weasel analogue) role with more advanced RWR/ECM equipment and the wiring to launch ARMs, including IIRC the (much more capable than Shrike which -A model Intruders carried) Standard ARM.

(Fun fact: the -B model was featured in "Flight of the Intruder" as the model that Willem Defoe's character was expert in.)

VAQ-131 was the second squadron to deploy on a cruise with the Prowler, the first being sister squadron VAQ-132 which left for a Mediterranean cruise shortly before VAQ-131 set of on its USS Enterprise WESTPAC cruise and Linebacker II.

HM has a good record of releasing Vietnam War schemes so I am very hopeful we will get this one! Apart from the history, I also think it's an attractive scheme in and of itself

All we'd need then would be an E-2B Hawkeye and we would have almost all of the aircraft deployed by the USN's Vietnam War era Carrier Air Wings!

Of course we would still need the A-3 Skywarrior too - something that may be a bridge too far even for HM (though I had thought that about the Vigi before so I do still live in some hope ).

Maybe it's lucky it doesn't - that practice-round (blue bands) HARM box might still not be empty and I can imagine the outcry if they were what was included!

Super model, now if SOMEONE would do sets of 1/72 SCALE crew with perhaps the non flying types having arms outstretched on canopy rails or a nice wave! Never happen but I am serious!
