Junkers Ju52, 4U+NH 2/KGzbV1 Operation Merkur, Crete 1941

Operation Merkur was the code name given to the German invasion of Crete, in May 1941. The use of paratroopers would be central to the success of the operation to take this Greek island and extensive use was made of the venerable old Junkers Ju-52 transport aircraft. Much loved by the troops it carried, the Ju-52 was vulnerable to attack from both ground and air and although Crete eventually fell to German forces, it was to prove a costly operation in terms of casualties. Ju-52 4U+NH operated during the attack on Crete, delivering German paratroopers to one of four strategic targets on the island. Despite coming under significant defensive fire, the aircraft survived the invasion of Crete and went on to serve in North Africa.

As one of the most reliable passenger airliners of the 1930s, the Junkers Ju-52 obviously attracted the attentions of Luftwaffe commanders, as they prepared for the coming conflict in Europe. Easy to fly, maintain and manufacture, the ‘Iron Annie’ saw extensive service with the Luftwaffe, with huge numbers of troops and their supplies transported by these graceful aircraft. Unfortunately, the Ju-52 was totally incapable of defending itself against Allied air attack and operations taking place without the protection of a fighter escort were tantamount to suicide. Despite the destruction of many aircraft, examples of the Ju-52 can still be seen flying to this day and even though they are now over eighty years old, they are just as reliable as ever.

Imagine if there were sticks of Jumpers in the Corgi Jump Birds. That would be a great extra.

I wonder me why corgi didn't make this Kreta Ju-52 earlier...
It's one of the most important operation done during ww2...

Well, they have the all green Crete Ju-52.

I'm excited for this one--I love the paint scheme.

Agreed. If I'd known this was coming I'd have held off picking up AA36902 for Christmas (to be fair I bought it in the Spring!)

Now I have to decide whether to get this as well, or instead of?

Shame you can't flat pack the boxes

This would make my forth Ju-52 (fifth if you count a small HM 1/144 version of Immelmann II)--so go figure they feature some of the biggest damn boxes of all my models. I just have a weird attraction to the -52 for some reason.

Yeah the Ju 52 was always a 'must have' for me too. What three did you get? Crete, Eastern Front (winter) and Floatplane by chance?

I'd like one from the invasion of The Netherlands. On 10th May 1940 278 were either downed or disabled. Still an unequalled number of a single type of aircraft destroyed on one day. Would make a nice diorama maybe.

Interesting article on the Ju 52 losses over The Netherlands in 1940.

I know that site Wildblood, definitely makes for an interesting read. Hard to say what the real impact was, but I've always been told that the result of so many Ju-52s lost was that the Germans weren't able to perform any kind of airborne assault on Britain, which they definitely had planned during the battle of Britain.

I received my Ju-52 today and it has turned out very nice indeed. At a quick glance I can't spot any errors on it and the scheme is very striking. I have taken some photo with some of the other 'classic' Corgi releases which show some unusual Luftwaffe schemes.
10/10 for me and a great release.

I like how they've made little 'scoops' for the main gear, instead of drilling a bit hole in the aircraft underside.

I had the Ju-52 corgi in winter camo, it was super cool.... but it was so big that it did not fit in my display cabibet... so I had to let it go
I have to say that this one looks absolutely awesome.

I don't have the space either but this model looks right and well executed. I'm sure the Ju 52 rivet counters or should that be Experten can find any number of inaccuracies but it still looks great.

An SAA example (ZS-AFA) would look great in my collection. *hint hint*
