Default HM Tomcat: what schemes did you suggest?

Hi everybody,

I'm really curious to see what others have suggested to Hobby Master for the F-14. (For those who haven't seen it yet, the
latest hobbymastercollector update includes a request for everybody to send in their two top Tomcat scheme suggestions,
which hawkonevoodoo will then compile and send to HM!)

My two suggestions were:

1) VF-142 Ghostriders early scheme
This is an early, beautiful high vis scheme featured on a famous Revell/Monogram kit that a lot of people probably tried and failed
to build as kids-- I know I did! Decals are also available from a
1/72 Hobby Boss kit.

2) VF-14 Tophatters bicentennial scheme
This beautiful, lesser known scheme would be a perfect complement to HM's first Super Hornet and is available in Hasegawa kits 00287 and SP3. Note:
this should not be confused with the more famous (but IMO much uglier!) Tomcat bicentennial scheme worn by the Gunfighters, as made by Dragon
and Witty.

BTW there's a better picture of the Tophatters bicentennial that I posted on the following page, about halfway down. The DAC server won't let me repost it, or delete the previous posting...

Send your suggestions to Dave. This is your chance to be heard. I sent a couple and received this reply:

Hi Scott.

Thank you for taking the time to write. Actually I haven't received that many replies so I guess people just don't want to bother voicing their opinions where they might actually get results. Many read the message but few reply and I just don't have time to go chasing around all the forums and reading hundreds of posts. I really appreciate your effort. You can be certain Hobby Master will read your choices.

Dave

I sent in a VF-14 and VF 101:

Skinner, nice call on that Grim Reapers Tom, I'm a fan of that Reaper tail design for sure, and the scheme looks great on a lower vis aircraft. Would be nice to have this on the shelf next to the red tail version from the same unit.

Not so into that version of the Tophatters, however. HM will be releasing a Superbug with very similar markings from that unit early next year and IMO it would be sad to see such similar markings at the same time.

Others may like this idea of paring though. For one thing, I know it's been suggested that an Aardvarks Tom would make a nice companion for the Aardvarks Phantom coming out soon, not so much in spite of the similarity but actually because of it, I think. Oh well, tastes vary

Certainly they're all worthy of having models made of them!

i went for these. the rainbow tomcatter since cw is unlikely to release one anytime soon... and iriaf since they're the only other nation that operated the tomcats. the desert camo would be welcomed. it's just that cw has already done that.

I suggested the same VF-14 scheme as skinner and this VF-142 scheme.
I also made some other suggestions like VF-33 Starfighters VF-14 80th anniversary and VF-111 low viz. I only suggested F-14a for now as I don't know if they have the parts for a B and a D.

I made a submission for the NSAWC aggressor scheme and the Iranian splinter scheme:

There are just too many I'd like to see to narrow it down so I went with something a little more obscure. I also expressed an interest in anything low-vis.

I just looked at my suggestions again and found out that VF-33 is not possible with the late style gun vents. The bicentennial scheme suggested by books also disqualifies because of early style gun vents. Same goes for IRAF Tomcats.

Yeah, ok, that makes sense re: 1976.

Unfortunately it looks to me like the 70th anniversary one might have the same issue, with the "heat register" style gun vents...

Clearly I need to look into this issue more deeply...

just got this reply from Dave. 75 mins after sending!!

Hi.
Thank you for taking the time to write.
I will add your suggestions to my list. I'm certain you will be pleased with the models and the price compared to others. If you ever have a problem with a model contact your retailer and if you don't get any satisfaction send an email to [email protected] explain the problem and send a Cc to me so I can monitor the situation. HM prides itself on looking after collectors.

Happy collecting.
Dave

Hope that helps

P.S. I assume you mean USN? The F14 was not a USAF bird.

The USAF flew them F-16s & F-15s birds during the Desert Storm, those are the two mean sisters of the F-14...
