That's a straight on shot at CW. It will be interesting to see how HM does with this.
I thought HM would do an incredible job with the F-15, not too hard to do but they have flubbed it big time due to the painting and still has not got the paint right after close to a year. So CW may not have too much of a worry, although you can't discount what HM is doing.
It will also be interesting to see how this affects the CW secondary market down the road. Those values have been sky high, I would think with a decent quality piece competing, it going to affect that in a strong way, assuming HM get them right.

Hopefully HM does a great job with it. Would look nice along side the CW F-8 Checkmates. Although CW makes pretty good ones, you'd think a decent competing model would definitely affect these high secondary prices that are currently going around.

I would definitely purchase any tomcat HM would come up with if the price was right of course because the CW F-14's are way to expensive for my budget...

Great news everybody !!!

I don't think CW has much to worry about, other than some competition to keep their prices from soaring. There are enough liveries to keep demand high for a long time.

It will help us modelers who recently started collecting or missed a particular livery.

This is a homely first release, but I can understand they would want to work out the problems on a less desirable scheme to begin with.

I think the price difference between HM and CW will not be that great. I think William once mentioned that the F-14 would cost a lot to produce.

I second the "less desirable scheme" sentiments. Still, while i am not against hm doing this (and hm hinted about this for a while), i hope this isnt the thing that makes cw give up the game entirely. And as for price... Hms vigi is $100 or so.. The tomcat is at least as complex so i think any discount will be relatively slight... At least rrp-wise (the difference between cw and hm models presently beign that cw almost always sells within 15pct of rrp while hm is discounted 50 or more percent for some releases).

So... Oop ack baby then?

Bah. Whippersnapper...

I've only been collecting since the end of 2011. Wait! That's 4.5 years... I am an old timer. I still consider myself a pup compared to the knowledgeable old dogs who remember the CW Tomcats retailing for $65.

I bought my first CW in 2009. Man I missed picking up so many back then. Luckily I managed to find some of the earlier releases for great prices.

"knowlegeable old dogs who remember cw tomcats retailing for $65"? hey, wait a minute... didn't you just "remember cw tomcats retailing at $65"???

it would've been a different story if u said they got their cw tomcats at $65... but having started collecting end 2011, you wouldn't have been that far off the $65 mark then

I'm still wondering about the last minute announcement, maybe CW is about to release the same model. The same thing happend when XPlus released their VF-111 F-4.

They NEED to pull this off well. Otherwise they'll spend however many thousands of dollars on a tooling but people will continue to buy CW models.

OH my god,

I just realized that hobbymastercollector says October 2015. Had read that as 2016 somehow, which seemed much more reasonable.

Assuming that's really written correctly, HM's Navy jet offensive is competely and totally amazing

Hawkeye, Vigi, Tomcat all in a few months...and Superbugs, Prowlers, and Hoovers shortly thereafter...

Dear HM, dear William,
thank you for making HM Tomcat! This is indeed awesome news for us collectors, especially for those who are so badly missing Jolly Rogers F-14! Hallowed be your/HM decision! I believe you will give us nice and detailed and accurate, simply best F-14 mold ever and many many JRs in classic grey/white schemes and other high-vis markings from the 70´s
(hopefully without that slightly brownish grey tone as on some HM USN Phantoms, clever mold with no gaps and with proper shape of windscreen). Keep working HM, really looking forward!

Very excited about this mould! (though not this particular release) Hopefully they will do some "re-releases" of some of the insanely priced sold out CW planes.

i dont think HMs tomcat will be that complicated to make as they had done the F-111 with the same swingwing type..... im curious to see the comparison.....i honestly prefer the finer panel lines of hm compared with centurys deep and pronounced panel lines which look unrealistic to me

I am definitely looking forward to this release not to mention the number of liveries that can be chosen from. I have a few CW F-14's and would like to see the comparison between the two.

Oh, my....HM will be releasing the F-14? I'm sure they will do a good job but I'll just stick to the CW for (as ironic as it may sound) my wallet's sake. Stick to one brand and purchase the 4-6 CW releases each year.

Just realized I started collecting CW back in 2010. Was in Tokyo, Japan when I found several stores carrying the SR71s, F-14s and A6s and that's where it started. Kind of kicking myself now for not picking up the other F-14s "kneeling config" at that time.

4-6 cw releases? they don't release that many tomcats annually but i'm guessing you're also collecting their other models...

well, if you're planning on sticking with cw, let's hope you won't be kicking yourself 5 years down the road for not collecting hm's tomcats. it'll be interesting to see you kick yourself with BOTH legs then

Its a necessary evil to limit my spending on military aircraft and so far it has held for the past 2 years. I will only purchase Taiwan and Japanese 1:72 military from HM, and will only consider CW 1:72 F14, A6, SR71s and their (Air Commander) F4s. Only broke once recently to pickup the 1:48 HM Taiwan P-51D.

This is Great news! I am confident that Hobby Master can bring us a great F-14 model. I hope they base the mould from Hasegawa or Tamiya and refrain from making tails and stabilizers out of plastic. I look forward to the pre pro pics.

Really good news but cost wise won't differ much from current CW prices I presume.

The Checkmates are a nice unit to make, but why do a decommissioning scheme in stead of an original 1970s scheme? Those looked so much cooler with the NG tail code and the white belly.

No way these will be below $100. Why do I think so? Tomcat is about the size of Vigi (give or take), but more complicated (sweeping wings).

There would only be one reason to keep the price low and that would be to strike at CW a bit harder. It's obvious William is taking that tact, so it's possible these could start off low ans gain price with popularity.

witty's tomcats were not that more expensive than their eagles and i'm therfore using hm's eagles as a benchmark rather than the vigi. don't forget... the tomcat is no bigger than the f111 which also have swept wings and they're cheaper than hm's current eagles! i think the price doesn't tag along with cost but is relative to its demand. so logically sub $100 is possibly true although hm may just price it higher in anticipation of the tomcats legion of fans. i suppose hm's business sense will spur them on the route of "why price it at $100 when we can charge $130 and still empty their pockets. just my two cents. that's probably how much will be left when hm's tomcats and superbugs go mainstream

Well, it's been awhile but how much does the HM F111 cost nowadays? Figure y'all can gauge the cost based on the Aardvark since it also has moveable wings.

What you have to count in tho is, that the F-111 mould is older than the new moulds, and I bet the prices for moulds increased over the years as well.

true... but i doubt prices are proportionate only to cost. i do believe profit margins are getting wider. then again that's always the belief as a consumer.

Well, the price is created by supply and demand. And, as you can notice, more and more people are getting in the hobby, while model runs are still at limited numbers. Hence, the price goes up, as there is much bigger demand than there is supply. And if people are willing to buy something at 150 bucks a piece, and you sell everything you have at this price, why on Earth would you sell it at 100 bucks a piece. Capitalism 101

Thumbs up Re: Hobby Master USN Grumman F-14A Tomcat, VF-211 "Flying Checkmates", 2004

Excellent Dan, that was the scheme I was hoping it would be, more detail on the tail.

Now let's just hope it's as good as their Navy/Marine Spooks and I'll be having one for my collection for sure.

(hopefully without that slightly brownish grey tone as on some HM USN Phantoms, clever mold with no gaps and with proper shape of windscreen). Keep working HM, really looking forward!
I do also hope HM comes up with a good quality F-14 mould to compete with the CW tomcat one.. But my biggest concern in how much HM will ask for their tomcats because if it's as high as the CW F-14's, then I might have to look else where.. I'm also waiting for HM to produce the long awaited Jolly Rogers using their own mould..

What I don't quite understand is why HM announced the Prowler and Viking 'New Toolings' several months ago, yet we still have no release date? Yet the F14 tooling gets announced in July with a release date 3 months later???
