Default My Century Wings Tomcat Lineup

My first post here. I've been reading on this forum for over a year now and figure now is a good time to try out my first post. I have did a lot of post readings here and have picked up a lot of valuable info, tips, insight and as you can see planes. I loved the model plastic plane kits growing up, but could not put them together to my satisfaction. Once I found out about the diecast planes with their look and feel, I was hooked.

Here are a few shots of what I have put together.

So far I have collected CW, Hobby Master, Witty Wings (all 1:72 military jets) and a few Minichamps tanks (1:35). Hopefully I did this post right and I'll try to add to the forum like the regular crew that I've grown accustomed to reading with their daily contributions.

Preciate the feedback fellas and thanks. Yeah you are right about that SKF, but now I've got to a point where I can cherry pick and/or do pre-orders for newer diecast. Well along with the cabinet of planes I've shown, I have another 2 empty sitting in my garage along with one directly across from this one filled with my HM, Witty & Minichamps stuff. I also have the FOV Tomcats, but ironically enough not the Jolly Roger ones.

Now its all crystal clear to me. Your the one I've lost all those bids to.

Must admit I'm a little jelly of your collection. send us more pics.

Just a heads up, every few months I take detailed photo's of my collection, just in case there's a disaster. Insurance companies can be difficult with fair market value when it comes replacing stuff like our glorious die-cast paper weights.

On further review I see what I believe to be Santa Cat on the lowest visible shelf, and at least one other...so that would bring the JR total up to (at least) 10, not including the second copy of low viz '94.

I will also add the guess that the one on the shelf next to Tomcatters black tail is the Pukin' Dogs.

...well...

...some of us would say "Tomcat nirvana" was Fightertown USA in the 1980s, or Oceana fifteen or twenty years ago, or the ready room of VF-101 or VF-121 as a green pilot/GIB/wrencher, knowing you have a whole career ahead of you with/in these jets--

...Or, better yet, the cockpit of one of these birds at angels 40 with four buffalos underwing, two bad attitudes, and a wingman beside you ; ) (But definitely not the cockpit of one of them on night approach to a carrier though. Yikes!!1 )

But yeah, for sure, diecast Tomcat nirvana

Once you start collecting Century Wings' F-14's, you will find yourself quickly pick up every subsequent release.

I only started collecting last year, I already have 3.

I have acquired all of the CW F-14 offerings except for 4. I'm missing the Black Bunny, Freelancers and the two earlier launch configs (JR AJ202 & Black Knights). All the liveries are fine by me as I just like the Tomcat from back in the day.

A super line up. Started doing that at one time myself but after the 5th Jolly rogers, started getting too expensive hobby wise and life was throwing some major curve balls at that time. Always wished I could get them back and keep up with it, nice to see someone else accomplishing such. A great collection!

Hopefully not inundating the thread with too many pictures, but here are a few more as promised. I took a bunch the other day (also it gives me time to figure out how to use my camera).

Hopefully I didn't cause folks grief bandwidth wise and hope you enjoyed the photos. Furthermore, if there are any particular questions and/or pic requests anyone would need, I would be more than willing as there were plenty of times in which I wished that I could have seen a different view or aspect of a model before purchasing. Like I mentioned earlier, I have what you see here along with a few other offerings from CW. I also have a decent collection of HM F-4s, A-10s, F-15s, F-16s & F/A-18s to name a few as well as a few Witty's.

I only found out about this diecast stuff I'd say early last year. My wife bought me wooden SR-71 for my birthday and I was like, "hey, that's pretty cool". I was always accustomed to the plastic kits that you have to put together and paint yourself. So I checked out Amazon and I got to googling and ran across these forums as well as the diecast manufacturers websites. As mentioned before, once I saw them online I had to see in person. Then when I finally got a few in hand, that was all that was needed. I was able to locate these all within the past year. Some retail, but the majority from eBay. Some were steals while others I had to back up the armored truck. I was also able to acquire quite a few from just asking sellers what other CW aircraft that they had available and get them that way. Just a matter of diverting funds from other hobbies to this one (video games, computers, power tools, vehicle related stuff, etc). Overall, I've paid a pretty penny, but I'm happy with what I've purchased.

Glad to see this one getting some love. I keep mine in clean configuration, on the ground with canopy up and (of course) wings swept, and it's very close to being my favorite. I think it's a really underrated model

Probably because the official CW photos were surprisingly poor, unlike yours

Never think you can share too many pictures with us. We love drooling over great collections, and seeing how other collectors have them displayed. I especially like the custom stands for the Tomcatters and Grim Reapers.

Your display cases are excellent. The next problem after filling them will be where to put more.

You've accomplished a great deal for such a short period of time. Thanks for sharing, and I hope to see more of those Phantoms soon.

I saw those stands in another member's post at one time, so I attempted to make some on my own. I used an unfinished wood plaque that I bought from the retailer Michaels, couple wooden screws w/ washers and a clothes hanger. Unwound the clothes hanger and straightened it out, then cut into 2 pieces to your liking. Drilled holes up front on both left & right side and also in the rear of the plaque. Insert metal piece in rear of plaque and bend to whatever height you would like the aircraft to sit at. This next part was tricky, but with the remaining metal piece of the hanger, I had to fashion two "U" shaped bends on the ends to secure with the wood screws and washers. Secure one side first, then do a loop over the first metal piece that is protruding from the rear before securing the remaining wood screw and washer. Spray paint and banking jets in flight are optional. I'll try to post a better view of the stand later on.

TC, you can do anything, well almost anything, if you put your mind and wallet to it. I just figured to get them while I can and sort the rest out later. Like I've seen expressed in many posts here on DAC, get what you like and what appeals to you.

I surely understand that you put your mind & wallet into purchasing all these fine tomcat models but what I find a little hard for me to comprehend is how you accomplished all this within one year..???

You must of been very lucky in finding all these F-14 models at the right time & for the right price as well, for example I was looking to also purchase a CW Jolly Rogers tomcat but the only one I've seen so far is one that sells on eBay for well over $500... And you have no less than 10 Jolly Rogers in your collection, I really admire you..

Yup, less than a year. Created my account here on DAC back in May of last year. I did some research first. I knew they weren't going to be had for retail. The older models along with the JR were hard to find and would be more price wise compared to some of the others. I checked the history on eBay and noticed the these JRs as well as Vandy 1 could be had for little over $150 just a year or so prior, but this was well before this diecast hobby crossed my mind. So when I started serious looking last summer the JR planes were low to mid $200s. After making a purchase, I would inquire as to what else a seller would have available and would catch breaks that way. Caught breaks on both VF-103 Last Cruise tomcats because eBay was having issues where users couldn't get in bids, but I already had bids in place and won them for relative bargains. Actually, it's been a few of the other liveries where I had to pony up because they were the ones I needed at that particular time or a last minute bidder had a last minute wild bid.

But yes, I've seen the prices soar on not only the JR planes, but some of the others as well since last summer. I have noticed that if a particular plane sells for very high price, you will likely see some seller come out the woodwork to list theirs. Rest assure, if you miss out on a particular model, one will definitely show up in due time. Some sellers are very reasonable and realistic with their prices while some others aren't. Supply and demand I guess. Word of advice going forward, if you like a particular diecast offering, try and get it pre-order or on that initial retail wave. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of the sellers and the unpredictability of competing bidders.

For some reason I feel like he's referring to the kneeling JR. Am wracking my brain for an explanation of why I have that association, though, and not succeeding...

Guess I'm getting to be an old man at 30, lol

Okay, thanks for clarifying.

I don't really understand the relevance, but thanks.

Oh, so it's not a reference to an actual 72 scale jet in the first place? Nevermind my previous post then, everybody

Now that the reference has been explained I think I can guess: it's like the American expression "everything but the kitchen sink..."

The idea is that you name an obscure object as part of an incomplete list, with the implication being that the obscure object's presence on the list is (joking) evidence of thorougness...

An example of this can be found on one of HM's skyraiders...the kitchen sink bomber!!!

edit: my bad, the Skyraider was actually a toilet bomber, not a kitchen sink...

It was referenced earlier due to the Echo toy jet in the very first post, in pictures #1 and #4.
