This aircraft was the Erich Hartmann's personal mount in the new German Luftwaffe in 1961.

Dan

1961, the first fighter wing of the new German Federal Luftwaffe, led by the famous Ace of Aces Colonel Erich Hartmann, was named JG 71 Richthofen after another well-known German fighter \ace, the Red Baron Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen.
Erich Hartmann returns from a mission in his JA-111. The nose of Hartmann's F-86 sports the black tulip, his personal emblem throughout World War II. This emblem is carried by all aircraft in his new fighter wing as a sign of loyalty to their boss.

JA-111 was also done by Corgi in the camo livery, in which it is currently presented at a museum in Germany

Was hoping for more HM Canadian Sabres, i.e.: RCAF 2 Wing Grostenquin France "Silver Falcons", to compliment HM release "Red Indians". Sales of this and "Golden Hawks" are not as brisk as HM would like so it might take some time before we see the release of any additional RCAF Sabres. HA4308 Luftwaffe "Black Tulip" is quite striking and with Erich Hartmann history this release might be the catalyst needed to help boost RCAF and other HM Sabre sales.

Just another thought re HM Sabre (Sword) releases. Hard to argue that the HM F-86 mold is not superior to anything that's out there. It was HA4309 "Red Indians" and Dan's 05/30/2014 enthusiastic review that got me hooked for this my first HM model. IMO, "Red Indians" is the most beautiful Sword produced by HM. So why the slow sales...? Could it simply be the name "Red Indians"? Well, politically incorrect as it might be viewed today, times were different then. I love mine and, as previously mentioned, would appreciate seeing more RCAF Sword releases, specifically "Silver Falcons" (430 Sqn), stable mate to "Red Indians" (421 Sqn) and "Lynx" (416 Sqn), RCAF 2 Wing, Grostenquin, France. These iconic aircraft represent Canada's huge NATO commitment in Europe after WW2. In closing, "Black Tulip" looks great! Buy it!

Another RCAF Sabre should be announced soon.

James, if I'm not mistaken - haven't you made quite a few kit based RCAF Sabres?

If I'm not totally on the wrong track, it would be great if you posted some photos of them.

Dan, not sure I can hold my breath much longer re RCAF Sabre announcement... Trying to guess which one it might be - RCAF 280 by chance?? There's a very cool photo of "280" (online) in flight somewhere over winter Canada... This Sabre, IMO, would make a killer HM RCAF release!!

James

OK, in that case, I'll be patient...

Hmm, "RCAF 280", "Silver Falcons"...??

Wishful thinking I guess...

If it has a maple leaf on it I'll be happy

Very nice... Canadair-built CL-13B "Sabre 6" with '6-3' wing "leading edge slats"! Powerful 7,275 lbs of thrust two-stage Orenda 14 engine capable of 710 mph. 6 M2 Browning 0.50 calibre machine guns (1602 rounds). Additional payload capabilities... Not a "Maple Leaf" but Ace of Aces Colonel Erich Hartmann's "Black Tulip" will do just fine for now

Found this B/W photo online... Sabres of JG71 "Richthofen" at Flugplatz Ahlhorn in late 1950's.

Apologize for "Sgt. Buttman" helping pilot get locked in...

Photos of the Final product have shown up on the Top Gun website.

Note the addition of the red tips on the external fuel tanks.

Not sure what to think about HM's "Black Tulip" at this point. When I first heard about it's planned release I was looking forward to it, but something about the "busy" (IMO) paint scheme has caused me to re-evaluate my interest. I remember when Corgi released their version of "Black Tulip" several years ago and how it really didn't do much for me. HM's offering is, by far, a more accurate rendition of this Sabre but perhaps I'm just more excited about HM's upcoming RCAF "Bluenose" release, which, IMO, should be exceptional. Expect "Black Tulip" will be popular among many collectors but, for me, I'll probably now pass

BTW, I think "Black Tulip" would have looked much better with the euro matt green/grey paint scheme as seen in the previous attached photo I provided... Perhaps JG71 Richthofen, or "Hartmann" himself, decided to change the squadron colour scheme to silver at some point. Expect Hartmann's crew chief, "Sgt. Buttmann", had a hand in it as well

Didn't he go on to be the Commissioner of the NHL?

I believe that Canadair delivered the Sabres to West Germany in Natural Metal finish.

Later, the camouflage scheme was applied to the entire fleet.

That sounds logical Dan as most Sabres, including the RCAF Wings serving in Europe at the time, used the grey/green operational paint scheme as well. Some took their time with the camouflage transition but eventually most, if not all, NATO Sabres and Starfighters were painted in this less visible and, IMO, more attractive scheme

Here's a shot of some Canadair CT-133 "Silver Stars" (Canadian trainers) lined up at CFB Baden-Soellingen. They are wearing the Grey/Green "Symmetrical Era Camouflage" I referred to earlier, more specifically, Green 503-301 and Grey 501-302 over Grey 101-327). I know it's "just a trainer" but I would love to add a Hobby Master version of this "T-33" to my Canadian Collection. And, of course, it would have to be wearing this incredible camo scheme. I'm aware that "others" have done this bird but I prefer HM's attention to detail and I know they would do this little beauty justice

Pretty sure you are correct - wishful thinking for a HM T-33 release I guess. Yup, "Falcon Models" produced a series of the T-33's. A friend has several of these, including the RCAF "Golden Hawks", and he seems quite happy with them.
