Default Suggestions for a new theme of mine.

So gents, I've just inherited a number of medals which belonged to my great-grandfather. I need to do some research to find out exactly where he served but from what I know thus far he spent WW2 as a truck driver with the British First and Eighth Armies, going through North Africa on the back of Operation Torch (1st Army clasp on his Africa Star) and later Italy and France - as I say, research needed.

The basic idea if you haven't guessed already is to build up a collection in 1/72 focusing on aircraft and (making my debut) armour from those theatres. I've kicked things off with the Gemini Aces Spitfire MkIX - GARAF1010 - and Hobby Master M7 Priest from the 1st Armoured Division at El Alamein - HG4703.

The Gemini Spit has blown me away for its detail and quality and I've resolved to make this a collection of high quality pieces - probably ruling out the corgi hurricane on that ground, sadly.

Well, any help with this will be hugely appreciated. Both Allied and Axis vehicles are sought

In advance - cheers guys!

Here's one to consider. It's a Corgi P-40F. The model has no pitot head but, otherwise, is OK:

This is a nice Corgi Stuka---again, no pitot head:

An even more interesting Corgi Stuka. The same model is offered by another seller on eBay for over $200:

Thanks for the suggestions Epap. I definitely need to add a Stuka as a priority but how do the offerings of Corgi and HM compare? HA0131 looks good on colours from HM.

If your great grandfather was a truck driver in the British Army, he may have driven a Bedford QL. Hobby Master has a 1/72 model of it but none in North Africa colors. Still, it might be easy to re-paint them in North Africa colors.

In terms of tanks, you'll want to get a M3 Stuart, Matilda II, and Crusader.

It's a tough theme to fill out these days.

This is not the best Corgi Bf-109, but it's a good deal, even considering the shipping cost:

Dragon Armor Sd.Kfz. 222:

Dragon 1 72 SD Kfz 222 DAK Deutsches Afrikakorps DMD60498 | eBay

Corgi have released desert themed Ju 88 (AA36701) & He 111 (AA3708) which may be worth a look?

I've got the P40F (AA35201) and it is very nice. So long as your ok with the gears down only option.

I stayed away from this particular BF-109 due to the faked rendition of the desert sand filter. There's another Corgi, just like it, without that problem.

I would rate the HM Stuka as slightly better than the Corgi, however, that Corgi model with the snake markings is most unusual. Only FOV has attempted it and the Corgi version is better.

I have thought about that myself, going to be asking some family members if any photographs are hiding away which may answer the question. Might be worth an email to William about the possibility of HM producing one at any rate.

Now that is a little beauty. What should I be looking to pay for these armour pieces on average? Of course I know it's subjective.

I'd guess 14-30 GBP.

I'm not familiar with the UK market and distribution, but these 222s, 223s, and the 251's are amazing in the detail. The Panzer IIIs are nice, but lack the detail of the earlier Dragon Armor releases.

S Models makes an excellent Crusader kit in 1/72 that can sometimes be found pre-built on eBay.

Interestingly, I have recently been rather active with a Desert Luftwaffe theme myself. Corgi, as alluded too in this thread, is the main manufacturer for this theme, although HM, Dragon have also released good stuff.

Still got a bit to go, mainly Corgi models, but its a beaut theme and Corgi really have done a good job with some of the mottling.

Been waiting an age for a mottled BF110, although I am a fan of HM's Desert ME110.

Great theme and great story behind your aspirations A-Holt.

I have found the Dragon "desert" BF-109s to have an overly dark color on their upper surfaces and much prefer the Gemini Aces version. Here's an example of the latter:

Does anyone do a good Panzer IV then? Arch enemy of the M3 Grant and later M4 to a lesser extent. I think I'm right in saying there were a few Tigers in the ranks of the Afrika Korps later on?

Thanks PBR - I am tempted by the Bf-110 myself I must say.

Does Vietnam and the Gulf War (round one) count as 'modern'? In which case I have it covered

Not in DAK colors or markings. All the early Dragon Armor Pz.IVs are Eastern Front. Beautiful models.

DA is now releasing the Mk. H. However, the H variant didn't roll out until June 1943, too late to join the effort in North Africa.

Other manufacturers may have released a DAK Panzer IV, but I wouldn't be interested due to the quality.

I've seen de Havilland Tiger Moths be referred to as modern military aircraft.

So anything since 1932 is 'modern'.

Ha. On that premise should we just say that flight is modern?

So I just stumbled across this. The caption reads: 'Local Arabs and their camels pass by Bristol Beaufighter Mark VIF, X8166 'E', raised by its tail while undergoing gun maintenance and harmonisation at Castel Benito, Libya.'

Is that a desert/night scheme she's wearing? Looks awfully similar to the Halifax in TheMadMajor's post.

Personal taste of course, but I think that would be one attractive beau.
