It's just their stock photos. If you look at the Diamondbacks jet it also shows without the pallets but the final product has them included. They could do some tweaking with the colors though. As pointed out by others the nose should be brighter and the sand colored cockpit covers should be dark grey.

From what I have seen, the bomb racks are attached to the pallets, not directly to the airframe.

Yes that's correct. I guess that's just a mistake by the guy who prepared the model for the photo shoot. They made the same mistake with the Diamondbacks jet.

would look good with the old tomcatters release I have, nice choice. Taking all my CW F-14's off Witty stands. Lost 3 planes recently that have been on Witty stands for awhile. Don't trust them. CW stand isn't the best looking, but it is more secure.

Hot off the interweb:

Century Wings have informed us that their recently announced VF-31 1:72 F-14 Tomcat may be delayed slightly as they fine-tune the paint-scheme for this model. As the US Importer and Distributor for this product line, The Flying Mule has been working with Century Wings to address collectors' concerns over the colors of the pre-production model shown on our website. Century Wings are currently revising the colors to more accurately represent those of the actual aircraft, before this model goes into production. As a result, the final release date of this model may very well be pushed back , but we applaud Century Wings for their continued efforts to produce the most accurate and highest quality diecast models in their class. We are quite confident that this one will be worth the wait!

Yes I can also confirm that in the newsletter from the Flyingmule, Eric worked hard to push century wings to get the colors corrected so it would be fixed before the final release. Any questions, you can call Eric directly over at the Flyingmule since he has close communications with century wings

Thank God they are fixing it! The Diamonbacks model wins the prize for worst CW release ever! The paint job is horrendous! Sooo dissapointed with it! No idea where the colours came from or who ok'd that to go ahead with production. Brutal! One picture with the real plane and anyone should be able to discern that this is way off! The FOV VF-32 Swordsmen model was the worst...now Surpassed by CW VF-102. Lets hope this Tomcatter comes out right! These models are getting very expensive for blatant mistakes!

It's my favourite key! Helps get the point across as opposed to swearing! Swearing took place when I opened the Diamondbacks box! As a Tomcat Fan and you are looking forward to adding it to your collection and you are let down by the end result. Devestating! I am sure I am not the only one out there who feels this way! !!

The whole front of the plane is way too dark. Looks like gunship grey almost they used. In the pic above of the VF-31 model the fix looks way better. A much more accurate depiction. The forward phoenix pallets they painted two tone with the same dark colour on the front of them. I havn't seen any pallets like that with two very discerning colour definitions. If someone has photos of that on this aircraft please post or any other line aircraft for that matter. I would love to add any such pics to my archive. Plus the overall placement of the markings on the forward fuselage as well is very poor. Most notably the red diamondback stripping, is not at the correct angle. It needs to come further back at the bottom, which then shows us that the US Insignia is in the wrong spot and it goes on. At the back of the plane more dark paint is used under the tails and the red on the top of the tails is too thick. It comes too far down. one last thing. On the model there looks to be two red triangles one flipped to look like a diamond right in front of the canopy below the windscreen. Not sure what that is. Don't see that on any pics of the real plane.

Ok a few other issues. The word NAVY on both sides are in the wrong spot as well this brings us to another problem if you move the words one quickly realises something else is wrong. The Ventral Fins are not positioned in the right spot they should be moved ahead up to the panel line in front of them. This is where a bad mold job in the first place starts to wreak havoc on a model when it comes to markings. Now I don't know about anyone elses' model but mine actually has 4 shades of grey on it. From the panel line behind the RIOs seat to the wrongly place demarcation line at the bottom of the Diomond on the spine behind the cockpit (more on that in a bit). And down to the top of the Engine intake and the walkway area. As well as the entire right side of the canopy rail is a different 4th grey. Not sure if mine is a one off or a shift change at the factory and someone missed another spray job spot. Now my favourite oops is the line on the spine where the colour is supposed to change from darker to lighter up to the nose. As opposed to lighter to darker which CW has done. Back in December on CWs site they posted a profile side view of what they said was the corrected version to depict the plane more accurately. Yet not only did they mess it up with the colours they didn't follow there own drawing. The demarcation line should go another panel line back just behind the small antennae bump. Not at the bottom of the red diamond! It was in the right spot on their drawing but not on the finished product. If CW would have used the Fightertown Decal Sheet for this exact model for a starting point. They would have been in good shape. However, must note, not all decal sheets are correct and certainly not a lot of profile drawings found online are either. Using a combination of all these and pictures of the actual subject matter is always best. Also asking the paying public up front is also a positive option as well.

New Pictures are now up with the corrected colors: Looks fantastic! I just put in my pre-order with the FlyingMule (who are close to selling out now)

I have to give props to Eric over at the FlyingMule for working tirelessly to getting the colors fixed, once the problem was presented to him, he contacted Century Wings right away to get it fixed and now we have a very nice Tomcatters model to look forward to, here are the pictures:

That looks niiiiice...I'm fairly new to the CW tomcat game myself, got a Wolfpack and a 2nd hand Black Aces '78 bird and a Witty Wings Jolly Rogers classic but no bombers...this fits the bill nicely. I remember building a plastic model kit of this scheme many moons ago too!

Just pre-ordered this via diecastairplane.com. How are people's experiences with that website? Is their packaging of models pretty good? Was thinking of changing my preorder to PetesCollectibles, as my experience with them before has been very good, and they pack their models really well.

To the Aussie collectorate... where are you pre-ordering yours from?

Jetbreath is just under $180 right through to Hobbyco at $221.50.
Mule with the coupon discount is $201 landed, Aviation Mega store is $198 landed.

All prices in AUD.

This one won't hang around for long

They actually moved the warning sign back by like 1mm or so if you compare it with the old sample pictures. It doesn't sit flush on the gap any longer. I'm happy with all the corrections they did make though. The demarcation line is such a small issue compared to the color issue and the wrong seats that they did fix. Another error I hoped they would fix is that they included the Phoenix again, they were retired by that time already.
I will be definitely getting this one. This is one of my favourite schemes. Might even be number one.

It's not just the position, but the fact that it is a completely different sign to that of the real aircraft.

Many people emailed them (myself included) about the demarcation line. I find it strange that they corrected some issues but neglected others.

Maybe some people were right with saying that flyingmule were the ones that CW listened to. And maybe they didn't mention those things. But I can understand you, if they go over it again why not fix all the mistakes. Nevertheless I think it's still one of CW better releases accuracy wise.

I saw some HM models in Japan 2 months ago that are nowhere to be seen here in Europe. But, they will come.

The model looks great and I'm glad i have two on pre-order, but as with supermodels if you look close enough you're bound to see pores and imperfections.

meanwhile, my #1 want tomcat still out there..

OK, honestly, a fan of Bill the Cat but I think Topmcatters has one of these in mind...
