Default I may have a problem

Joined here on 28 January. At that time, I had two diecast planes from Falcon Models.

Today is 12 February. I now have twelve...the above, plus three Wittys and seven Hobby Masters. I am eyeballing at LEAST three other planes right now.

But hey....I can stop anytime I want, right?

Hy,

uhh, that's a fast growing collection! I know how this dieCast virus works in the brain!
I am infected too...
But, if you always know your financial limit, theres no reason to take medicine against it!
There's always a model you ever wanted!
Happy collecting...

Greets, Tobi

Sorry. It's terminal. Only death, a woman, or financial ruin can stop you now.

It's not going to get better unfortunately. I had quite a few when I joined DAC. My then hobby rapidly accelerated. One pierce of advice.....buy what you like.

Let me introduce to the aforementioned list populated by Mr. Skinner, the constant which is "space".

I think I recall a Brit DAC'er who had to buy a bigger house to display his collection in manner befitting them/it.

Could have been a play on words and was for the wife, but who knows, my garage has less free space every month.

I will echo the other member's sentiments.... there is no hope for you. These models are only getting better.

Welcome to the jungle.

I'm sitting at around 100 moderns and about 60 WW II's and find myself getting more and more creative with shelf space.

Truly the real problem that know one is mentioning is not "shelf space", but what my wife calls "empty box towers" that this hobby creates. I've got one full 2 door closest filled from ground to ceiling with empty boxes and they've started stacking in the guest room closet now.

The good news is that collection mania eases up over time. I added 300+ models in 3 years of collecting, but have now settled into a routine of buying only items that meet my collection criteria.

Right now, because you are new, your like a cat with a ball of catnip. Totally out of control. It will ease over time. You can get to 1000 a lot easier then you think. You need to figure out what your criteria is. I know a guy all he collects is F-4 Phantoms. That's it. We only go around once,it should be fun.

When I returned to the hobby I told myself I'd impose a fixed monthly expenditure limit and I've overspent (by more than a few shekels) every month so far.

I am hopefully reigning it in a bit now. Whilst trying to resolve the usual space dilemma!

I suspect I will be slowing down quite a bit, perhaps down to 1 or 2 per month. I've already noticed I gravitate towards planes that have downed others, participated in noteworthy missions, or had distinguished pilots.

Oh, and look cool.

This was the best advice I got when I first came here a few years back - Pick your theme(s) and stick to them!

I didn't. But it was and still is good advice, and I mainly, generally, mostly adhere to it.

As mentioned above, this is a very infectious hobby. Once you're in it's hard to stop. I said I only wanted 1 at first. I now own 4 AA planes and look forward to add the 787 to my AA fleet and try and source other models I'm missing. *sigh*

It's going to be hard to find enough space to display that one. You may need to move a Sterling out of the way to make some room.

Yeah, it's going to be tough--that is if I can even lift the box.

I will have to make room for a new HM Avenger, DW Corsair, and a "fixer" Corgi Dragon and His Tail from a couple weeks earlier, though. BTW--anyone have spare landing gear for AA34001?

Within the context of your „problem“ - especially "dangerous" are Superkungfu´s photos. Be warned! Great photography skills of this guy will cost you lot of money!

...my own enjoyable experience

Hi Mar_Ji,
in reply to your question, mine are still in their boxes in the garage.
I had an audit a couple of weeks ago, stacked in piles they took a space 4m x 3m.
I was sorting out any that no longer meet my criteria.
In addition I have a model railway collection which is enormous. I starting collecting diecast to compliment the railway set, and it has just got out of hand and taken over from the trains. As a kid I built a huge number of Airfix models, so many that I had top donate 70 to Cosford Aerospace Museum.
I think we can see a pattern emerging.

I just wanted one F16.
I haven't even ordered it yet but I'm already thinking of getting a Spitfire and a Bf109 too..

Creeping obsession
It starts off as just one or two.
Than you see another. Then you start following a theme, one theme leads to another, my latest is the Korean War. Then you start "infilling" a topic covered on a previous post.
It's insidious, ones and two's turn into tens and then hundreds.
I have mine posted to the office so Madame does not have too much of an idea of how many I buy. She's pretty tolerant, on the basis that everyone should have a hobby.
Hi my name is Yonny and I'm a diecast model addict!
Start reading the serenity prayer.

God, grant me the money to afford the models I wish to buy,
The courage not to get distracted by SKF's photos,
And the wisdom to know when to stop bidding on Ebay.
Amen.

One of the positives I attach to this hobby is that many of these models are "investments" to a limited degree. Assuming that the hobby doesn't completely wither up and vanish some day in the future, most of these models should only increase in value as time passes (especially as certain models become more rare). So, I look at it as I can enjoy the models for as long as I'd like and when (or if) I decide to sell my collection, I will at the very least recoup most of my money.

Nice that the Army is collecting the ground support aircraft. It is a good thing to have friends who wish to help. Work with some of these aircraft in your time overseas?

Hope the A-10 stays alive for while longer.

Nah, though I did see a lot of A-10s while I was in Germany in the late-80s/early-90s. I just like planes. And since HM likes to give out bombs with the models, I hang them on there.
